HEINEKEN CUP hot-shot Richard Haughton says he is more interested in helping Saracens roam further into unchartered waters than retain his crown as the tournament's leading try scorer.

The vivacious wing landed his fifth European score during last Friday's quarter-final clinching triumph over Glasgow Warriors, taking his tally to nine for the season.

And the five pointer, which took him level with Clermont Auvergne's Aurelien Rougerie at the top of the whitewash breachers, was all of his own making.

Chasing down Glen Jackson's speculative kick during the opening exchanges, Haughton watched as Hefin O'Hare dallied on the ball inside his own try area before diving full length to touch down and leaving the Welshman red-faced.

For Haughton, it was retribution for knocking the ball on with the line at his mercy in the drubbing of Biarritz six days prior.

"I wasn't expecting to score from that situation at all," admitted the 27-year-old on O'Hare's generosity. "I just thought I would chase it down and see what happens. I was quite happy he gave me the opportunity."

Haughton made his 14th appearance of the season at Firhill, equalling his total from his previously injury-hit campaign. He is just four tries shy of the 13 he scored back in the 2002/03 season where he picked up the Young Player of the Year award.

He admits he is enjoying the best form of his Sarries career this season, something that should culminate in a two year contract extension when his current deal expires in the summer.

Incoming director of rugby Eddie Jones has spoken of the need for Saracens to have a core of young, talented English players punctuating the international stars in the starting IV, and Haughton certainly fits the mould.

"I'm happy with our results but I still feel I should have more tries to my name at this stage of the season," he added. "I wasted a great chance to score against Biarritz and I got held up on the line in Glasgow.

"But it's more a question of the team keeping the momentum going and me taking my chances when they come. Finishing as top try scorer (in Europe) is not one of my main concerns - playing well for the team is."

Haughton, who has beaten 19 defenders and scampered 390 metres in the competition so far, says he would not hesitate to stay on and complete a decade of service with the Men in Black should a new deal be tabled at the end of the season.

"I would be happy to sign on," he insisted. "I've been at the club a long time now, the people here are like a family to me and I would be delighted if I was asked to stay here."
