WATFORD have signed Birmingham City left-back Mathew Sadler for a reported £750,000 with the fee potentially rising to £900,000.

The 22-year-old has penned a three-and-a-half year deal at Vicarage Road and is expected to make his debut in the FA Cup fourth round tie against Wolves on Saturday.

Sadler has represented England in several youth age groups and was a product of the Blues' Academy set-up.

He enjoyed a successful campaign in 2006-7 when he made 41 starts for Birmingham and he agreed a new contract last summer.

Sadler's arrival will increase the pressure on Jordan Stewart and provide some much-needed competition for him.

Sounds like a good signing, he is a much needed left back can't wait to see what he can do. Anyone is better than stewart at the moment.

who is this guy? ive never heard of him. But i dont care either as long as he is good enough. i think stewarts been ropey at times this season and we have no other cover at left back so im happy we got a young, eager player in hopefully with a bit of class too. now all we need is a center back, a midfielder and collins john. Well done to boofers though keep up the good work!

Decent Signing, Watford says...

Decent signing Sadler, still a bit raw, but my Brum mates say he's a really good signing for us.

Though Colon will be disappointed that we are not signing Roberto Carlos,...or Fowler and Hasselbaink.

chris, the vic says...

Seen him play and he is useful

But the big bonus will be JS will either have to up his performance to thast of at least last year or give way

Along with Dav whilst he lasted i think Aidy may at last be improving his choices in the transfer market...now for that midfielder and if he arrives from wednesday it could be a third good attempt at a signing

Bye bye Stewart. This guy was a captain for England U18s... so it's goodnight from him, and it's goodnight from us. You can go off to Hollywood now, fella.

This is a great signing, he is a very promising young player who is good already. So pleased that those of us who had faith that we were trying to get players have had our faith rewarded.

I am sure there may be a couple of others on the way as well.

I hope this stops the colons of this world moaning about AB!

Just wish that people like Colin would understand that he won't be consulted on each of our signings and who we may potentially be after. Let's see if it has the desired effect on JS

P, Brighton says...
5:55pm Thu 24 Jan 08

Woohoo!! Bye bye Stewart! Although davenport had to go back he was a good signing, as Sadler seems to be. I feel so much better and more hopeful now!!
Laters Jordan, I wont miss you!

Matty Sadler !!!

Good luck Matty , a true blue nose through an through.
You've got a great lad, who plays with his heart as well as his head

Jalvin, Hemel says...
7:01pm Thu 24 Jan 08

Well some good news at last! It seems that all of a sudden the players who wouldn't/couldn't sign for us in the summer are now joining us, maybe things aren't as bad as we all thought. I wonder how many more signings are on the way? There's been talk of Walcot going out on loan, maybe he might hop over the fence, somehow i doubt it though, i shouldn't think ARSEen wants his neck broken.

A very big welcome Sadler from all us mugs at the vic

7:03pm Thu 24 Jan 08

C'mon clappers

If this guy is that good then why are Birmingham - relegation fodder - prepared to sell for such a small fee?

We need quality, not another ex England schoolboy who has "lost his way".

Why does the manager not poke his nose over the hedge at London Colney for pity's sake?

Another flop arrives at the vic me thinks.

Scott, Watford says...
7:13pm Thu 24 Jan 08

Sounds like a decent signing and will provide that much needed competition for Jordan Stewart! Hopefully Aidy will sign another centre back, Glenn Whelan from Sheffield Wednesday and Collins John to add a bit more firepower in attack, I know some fans have been slagging off Collins John but he does have a good goal scoring record and he's a Dutch under 21 international, so he must have some quality, just needs a kick up the you know what!

Cliff, Oxford says...
7:27pm Thu 24 Jan 08

This bloke Colin is a 24 carat plonker! Talk about pessimistic does he think because we cant sign players like Wayne Bridge who is a struggling B rate player at Chelski, then Matt Sadler must be rubbish! As for looking over the fence, the grass there is not that much greener at the moment, Theo is bound for a prem club and Arsen doesnt do us favours for some reason! So get a life and stop being controversial, Start being positive at our possibilities son!

WFC & Proud, Watford says...
7:27pm Thu 24 Jan 08

So colin is back and just as happy as ever.
I'd guess Sadler's going as McLeish is building a new team with players he wants - inc a new £1.5M Scottish LB called David Murphy who we were after at one time.
Who was our left-back before Aidy arrived & converted Stewart - successfully - from left-mid to left-back then covered with Chris Powell whilst developing Jordan Parkes? It's called good mgmt & planning but then you would never credit Aidy with anything positive, will you.

Steve, Birmingham says...
7:29pm Thu 24 Jan 08

He'll do a good job for you. Played nearly all the season at left-back in our promotion team. As quick as they come - but distribution and passing ability limited. Best of luck Mat at The Hornets.

Colon you r such a c**k, your posts r stupid and so r u, you dont support WFC so just go away you pathetic cretin ...
It is more than likely Boothroyd has asked for many players on loan from alot of the top clubs, but its not as easy as "sticking your head over the fence" you p**k ...........
Just say something relevant, interesting or constructive, Most people couldnt give a toss what you say, and before you call me a happy clapper, i am far from it and i would love to see big changes at this club, the bosses need to answer some questions and boothroyd looks out of his depth, but the way you go about it shows what a complete **** you r ... Yes i know this is just abuse aimed at one person, but i could not give a t**s ......

At last one of the positions we needed to cover has been dealt with. Jalvin is right when he says that some of those who didn't want to sign for us in the summer are now showing interest.

Whatever happens Aidy is doing his darndest and as fans we have to support that.

Yes we could spend more and we need a midfield playmaker and another PROVEN striker at this level but another cup run after Saturday and who knows what will happen in the last few days of Jan?

Paul Davies, Welwyn says...
8:25pm Thu 24 Jan 08

We have a playmaker but aidy doesn't want to play him i've said it before and i say it again if we bring in Rinaldi, Are chances of promotion are high but he needs to give the lad a chance he's got class now let him do it he can change a game!

Voice of reason, Watford says...
8:32pm Thu 24 Jan 08

Great........He's gonna bring some much needed hair to our team, all we need now is for Williams to get fit and then we've got an even balance....yahoooooo

Cliff, Oxford says...
8:56pm Thu 24 Jan 08

Rinaldi, is rated highly by his team mates and is a holding midfielder and deserves a chance. Maybe Aidy is saving him for our version of the Brazil Carnival at the end of season.
Whats his hair got to do with it anyway!

GayBoy, Load of Hay says...

I sometimes wonder why AB brought the likes of Priskin and Rinaldi, does he think they're not ready?
We were in Prem when they signed, so if AB thought they weren't good enough then they should be involved more at Championship level!
Is it communication? or is he gradualy gonna bring them in? or were they bad buy's?
Who knows! AB most proberbly isn't sure!
But what I do know is I trust AB and wouldn't swap him with any manager outside premiership.
Maybe AB thought these two may get more of a chance at the end of the season when we thought we would be streets ahead at the top - and it's just not panned out that way and the pair are not ready for a bit of a tough battle!

Voice of reason, Watford says...
9:43pm Thu 24 Jan 08

Colin isnt a luton fan, he knows too much about our club to be anything other than a watford 'fan'. His problem is that he doesnt understand that we follow our club essentially for enjoyment, his spite filled tirades show he hasn't grasped some simple facts. Colin I have corrected you like a schoolteacher corrects a pupil, please don't make me correct you again, and DO NOT answer back

Birmingham left back...signed for 750k.

Only 22 so got a long time ahead of him hopefully and he cannot be any worse than Jordan "2 contracts rejected and I'm off" Stewart!

Sounds pretty decent if not quite up to Premiership standard yet.

Hopefully get a couple of more players in too if we ever actually sell King!

BTW Colin is a wind-up who is fake and just likes to be negative as a joke!

(I suspect anyway...if not why not give the bloke a chance!?)

funny thing is Colin has the clear intention of causing unrest amongst the fan base with a view to removing the 2nd best mgr the club has ever had. Oh dear Jordan, you really should have signed a new contract. Now your value to Watford has plummeted to new lows. No more running down the wing watching your opponent put in a cross. No more step overs pretending you can play football. Lets see how many premiership offers you get this summer.

Spot on Tony, he really is too much of a clown to be taken seriously for one minute.

This looks a good signing and good to see some more on the Rinaldi bandwagon. He's our best midfield distributor by light years and should be a regular in the first team. It was his home comeback against Palace that got us our first home victory for ages. (unfortunately it was only on the programme cover!)
