Watford will need to prove exactly why they had the best away record in the Championship this season at the KC Stadium on Wednesday if they are to get to the play-off final at Wembley after Hull City claimed a 2-0 first leg advantage at Vicarage Road this afternoon.

Goals from Nick Barmby and Dean Windass put the visitors in the ascendancy before the Hornets suffered another blow when John Eustace appeared to be the victim of a harsh red card.

But the margin of victory was tough on the Hornets, who produced one of their better home displays of the campaign but could find no way past keeper Boaz Myhill and his resolute defence.

Most of the signs in the build-up to the game were that Aidy Boothroyd would bring in Tamas Priskin to replace the suspended Darius Henderson, but the manager shelved that idea and instead opted to bring in Lionel Ainsworth, suggesting that a change in formation was on the cards.

Boothroyd's counterpart Phil Brown, meanwhile, made two changes to the side that went down 1-0 at Ipswich Town in the last game of the regular season, with Richard Garcia and Barmby replacing Dean Marney and Caleb Folan.

Watford started with a 4-3-3 formation, with Ainsworth and Jobi McAnuff providing the support to Nathan Ellington from out wide, and it was the home side that had the first sniff of an opening inside two minutes when Tommy Smith glanced a Mat Sadler corner from the right well wide.

Within 90 seconds McAnuff did very well to cut in between two opponents on the left and produce a blistering right-footed effort that was deflected over. From McAnuff's resultant corner, the Hornets thought they had taken the lead when Dan Shittu rose to power home a close-range header, but referee Kevin Friend adjudged that Leigh Bromby had impeded keeper Myhill.

More controversy followed soon after when Windass went in late on Richard Lee but the referee let the veteran striker off with a good talking to.

But after eight minutes Vicarage Road was plunged into silence. Following a Hornets throw on the left that was flicked on, the ball was played back towards the Watford area and a complete misunderstanding saw Shittu and Sadler both go up to challenge for the ball and only succeed in diverting the ball into the path of Fraizer Campbell, who cut in from the right side of the area and picked out the unmarked Barmby and he made no mistake from ten yards to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

However, that blow didn't seem to affect the Hornets too much, although they had to wait until the 15th minute for their next opening when Ellington was unable to turn a McAnuff cross from the left on target after good work by the Hornets' wide-man, Smith and Lee Williamson.

The Hull boss then complained vociferously when he thought his side should have been awarded a penalty after Garcia appeared to be shoved in the back in the area, before Ainsworth sent over a good cross from the right that Ellington was unable to get to.

But Watford were undone by Hull's thought and movement again after 22 minutes. Garcia played a delightful cross-field pass from left to right to Barmby, who fed the overlapping Andy Dawson. His cross was met by Campbell, whose header looked to be going in but was deflected onto the bar by Bromby, but Windass reacted sharply to head in the rebound and give the visitors a very healthy 2-0 lead.

The Hornets could have one back five minutes later when more good work by McAnuff created an opening for Elington, but he was closed down quickly by Dawson and his eventual effort was deflected behind.

But from possibly being 2-1 down Watford could have found themselves trailing 3-0 when a shocking error by Lloyd Doyley let in Campbell, who teed up Windass, but the striker could only harmlessly lift the ball into the arm's of Lee.

But McAnuff, who was Watford's brightest light in the first-half, brought the best out of Myhill after 36 minutes with a sweetly-struck rising right-footed drive that the keeper did very well to tip over. From Sadler's resultant corner, Smith really should have scored, but he appeared to lose the flight of the ball and glanced it wide of a near open target from barely three yards out.

The Hornets continued to have plenty of possession around the Hull box in the run-up to the break, but the build-up was very ponderous at times and lacking tempo.

Campbell rather stupidly got himself booked just before the interval for delaying a free-kick, before a well-struck Smith effort from the edge of the area forced Myhill to tip over.

Despite the scoreline - and in a marked contrast to recent home games when they have been trailing - Watford were applauded from the pitch as the faithful did their best to encourage the players, despite trailing 2-0.

The Hornets made a positive start to the second period and almost got one back three minutes in when Doyley's long throw was flicked on by Shittu and deflected onto the roof of the bar. From the resultant corner, Ellington got down at the near post to glance goalwards but Myhill made a smart save. But that was nothing compared to what was to follow moments later.

Some neat footwork by Shittu towards the left saw him create a crossing opportunity, but he pulled the ball back towards the edge of the area where Sadler met it perfectly with a left-footed volley that was heading inside Myhill's right-hand post until the keeper somehow got across full length to push it behind.

There were signs that temperatures were beginning to boil over and they did just short of the hour when Eustace went in to challenge the grounded Garcia, who proceeded to roll over clutching his ankle. The Watford skipper did get involved in a pushing match thereafter but there appeared to be no real justification for the red card the referee produced afterwards.

The Hornets also lost Shittu to injury during the stoppage in play and he was replaced by Jay DeMerit. Craig Fagan then came on to replace Barmby and Windass made way for Folan. In between times though, Smith forced another good stop out of Myhill after a McAnuff corner found him unmarked at the far post.

But Campbell spurned a great opportunity to put the tie out of reach after 72 minutes when he was put clear on goal, but Lee came off his line and blocked his shot. Boothroyd played his hand soon after, bringing on John-Joe O'Toole and Priskin for Doyley and Ainsworth, while Nathan Doyle came on for Garcia.

Priskin's impact was almost immediate, doing well to dispossess Sam Ricketts on the left before rifling in a shot that Myhill could only push back out into the area. Then a long Bromby free-kick came within inches of picking out the diving DeMerit at the far post, while at the other end Doyle shot straight at Lee.

But Doyle came within inches of putting the tie to bed after 81 minutes with a left-footed curling shot that beat the dive of the Watford keeper but rebounded out off his right-hand post.

The Hornets kept looking for a potentially priceless goal and they almost got it twice in the closing stages when, first, Brombt had a shot blocked, and then Priskin headed narrowly wide of Myhill's right-hand upright from a DeMerit cross.

But in injury-time, Lee was forced to make a fine save to keep out Campbell's curling effort after the on-loan striker had turned Bromby inside out.

Just got home - hard to see things being turned around now.

Certainly had no luck today. However, bearing in mind we won one of our last 14 in the regular season, and lost our last three at home, we probably used up our luck by just staying in the top six.

I wonder if those behind the scenes are nervously thumbing through the famous 'plan B'?

2:23pm Sun 11 May 08

That was the best we've played in a long time.
The ref was a biased fool and spoilt the game for us.
Eustace shouldn't have been sent off but his reaction might well earn him another ban and fine.
Most of the team played well, although defensively all bar Lee were found wanting.
Hull will score in the second leg so we have, virtually,no chance.
It's a shame Hoofers only changed to 451(or 4411 if you prefer)when he became desperate because several weeks of this formation would have resulted in different results/performances
.
Let's hope for our fair share of luck on Wednesday and a better ref.

Is the ref's name ironic? Mr Friend. He is not mine. At least we have away advantage on the second leg. Too many times this season refs have not given penalties when it has not been obvious it was a penalty, but have sent off players when there is no way it was an obvious red card offence even without the hindsight of a TV replay. Spoils the game.

Loidis, Norway says...
2:38pm Sun 11 May 08

I was probably not the only one who said "this is not going to be Watford's day", when the referee wrongly disallowed Shittu's goal.

But this tie is not over. An early Watford-goal at Hull, and it's game on!

It's not going to be easy, but this is not a mission impossible!

Vicar Rage, says...
2:46pm Sun 11 May 08

Loidis - I wish I shared your spirit!

We had our chances to day, but generally from distance. If we were getting behind teams more, I'd fancy us.

Plus, we've only score more than one goal in one of our last 12 games.

I think a clean sheet is the key on Wednesday. If we concede, I think it's curtains.

obviously all the good ones are reffing prem games today.

i thought we played really well (apart from 2 lapses in defence costing 2 goals!) and if it wasn't for their keeper (myhill) and the ref we could have won convincingly!

if only we could have nicked a goal back....

Mark, Watford says...
3:05pm Sun 11 May 08

In the main compared to most of the home performances that was not bad but 2 defensive errors and bad decisions by the ref cost us.

Cannot see us getting 3 goals sadly at the KC.

Oh well...felt more positive with some of the guys that n the past.

Ellington however can just go elsewhere if he's not going to bother up front because the otherwise attacking players did try.

Our defence was shaky everywhere I have to say and did not see what Eustace did exactly.

Oh well...we were never good enough to go up.

well well another hull opinion.

First and foremost we were beaten fairly by Barnsley and clapped their team off...then we were beaten by Scunthorpe and again applauded their team off, then today we were beaten by a team that cheated, had the ref in their pocket hoofed the ball far more than us and who had an excellent goalkeeper.

Shittu has more class than your no 15 will ever attain, and yes our centre halves made a bad mistake each but then Shittu had scored a goal.

Your manager seemed unable to stay in his area saw fouls that werent and ignored fouls that were...a bit like his mate Mr Friend.

Based on the two games so far Bristol played by far the better football, but the three other teams would struggle badly in the premier.

We have at last started to see a team play football and subject to some fine tuning must have a great chance next year.

Message for Sage..hope you watched Myhill he was the difference today...and maybe just maybe in the next 90 mins we will give a very arrogant hull a game to humble them.

I have to say that was the best we have played in a while. Doyley though was very poor, a man of his experience in these games should do better.

Hull are most likely to go through now but if they do go up hope they enjoy the one season as they will not survive, as will none of the teams promoted in the play-off.

As for you Tigrr hull, did you not see the rows of empty seats in your end or couldnt you see that from your armchair? Very good performance today with the keeper and the ref being the only thing between us and a great victory. Shittu goal wrongly ruled out, Eustace wrongly red carded, expect that to be rescinded. Aidy got the selection and tactics right except for Doyley and as poor as Priskin has been i think he wiuld have poached a couple today with the amount of chances we created around the 6 yard box in the first half. Well, we all got our wish.....Ts up front behind Ne, didn't really work did it?
Seemed odd at this late stage to try something different, should of happened weeks ago!
Shocking refereeing decisions for both teams but you couldn't exactly call him a homer.
Doyley was absolutely pants and should be discarded from now on, didn't think Sadler did anything more than what Stewart would have done, far too early for LA to be involved and didn't benefit us at all.
JM had a great 1st half especially but faded, too much tracking back for covering Williamson who I thought had an in out game, NE....enough said.
On positives, JD was great when finally coming on (shouldn't be on the bench) and Priskin unusually looked good.
RL as i've often said worries me greatly, thought he could have done better with opening goal.
Didn't think much of Hull and thought they didn't deserve there win, not much to them, that Ian Ashby is just a thug in the middle and should be sorted out in the 2nd leg.

We lost because the referee was the poorest I have seen since Rob Styles. In fact, he was worse than Rob Styles! Shittu's goal was a good one and unfairly disallowed. Eustace should not have been sent off. We can appeal against the red card - pity we cannot appeal against the referee's other appalling decisions.
I am glad AB chose Ainsworth. I thought, however, he was wrong to take him off. Doyley was dreadful; Ellington was awful; Priskin should have been brought on earlier; Demerit should have played from the start. Smith and McAnuff had excellent games. Bromby and Sadler were ok. Lee a bit dodgy; Shittu great going forward but suspect in defence; Williamson and Eustace not good enough. Although I think the referee's decisions constantly went against us and prevented us from getting a result it has to be admitted - we are not good enough for the Premiership.

Some good points but i think your wrong about johnny Eustace. Most of the passing game originated from him and did you not notice how pumped up he was, pulling all the strings and generally berating anyone who didnt show equal effort. Not being good enough for the Prem is not really the point is it. We need to yo-yo a couple more times, take the money, sort the ground out, then establish.

Hull got away with a lot today and did little to merit the win.
Phil Brown says that the ref was great and got the two major decisions right ! Ref was actually incompetent and did much to determine the outcome of the game.
Hull were better than us defensively - mainly down to organisation by their no.4 and a better keeper.
SOMEONE should be giving the orders at the back and keeping the FBs on their toes and in position.
Good luck needed on Wed. The only break we got today was when they hit the post...

No wonder so many absentees at the Vic today - OK, we can live with defeat but it would be nice to see a home goal now and then.
As a pro footballer, surely JE should realise that with the poor refs in the champ. to tackle recklessly then raise your hands to an opponent can easily get a red card. Is he stupid? He should be fined by the club even if the FA does relinquish a ban.
LD dreadful, last chance for NE -shouldn't ware the shirt again. Very disappointing again and again. With other talent that showed in spells, AB should really get them playing better than they are. Still, no problem - lets blaim the ref.

WFC 0 - Mr Kevin A Friend 1 (+ a seat home on the Hull coach and invite to the party) - Hull 2. Well played Myhill, he made 4 great saves and that was the difference.

Watford did played better than they have for a long time.

Eustace should never have been sent off, he was not going in studs first but was on his feet - he just missed the ball while players were on the ground. Why weren't there bookings for Ashbee and Doyle?

Why was the WFC goal disallowed? The only foul I saw in the box was Myhill pushing Tommy Smith out of the way, which he did every time. A poor referee who could not match the importance of the fixture.

These games are financially too important to be affected by referees and should only have the top refs. Perhaps it would be better if it did not coincide with the final day of the Premier League then the top refs would be used.

Watford played better without Darius Henderson, I would start on Wednesday with Priskin and Ellington up front and Smith wide on the right. I would also be appealing for the red card to be rescinded and Mr Friend to be demoted to the Unibond League for next season.

Most people in the professions, and tradesfolk too, can be sued for negligence. Why can one not sue today's referee for negligence? He has most probably cost WFC millions. Surely, WFC should be able to sue Mr. Friend (of Hull?) for its losses of income, due to his incompetence, if, as is likely, the Club does not get to the Finals, let alone into the Premiership.

We played better today and I am pleased for that.We still look inexperienced in the final third and while I do not rate NE I felt a bit sorry for him today. He was put in a formation that left him isolated up front. It's great to have 2 wingers providing the ball but you cannot do that for 90 minutes.TS should of been playing withing 20 yards of him at all times.Everytime NE got the ball he had to pass to the nearest player that was 30 yards+ away? This is what concerns me with AB.Before he had the fall back of KB for advise, now I find it easy to understand whats going wrong with the formation and that is not right. We have not got the same buzz as we did, purely beacause we have not got the same backroom staff. In for a penny, in for a pound I still back AB and he IS one of the best managers around.Come on on golden boys!

We look very vulnerable at the back now, Doyley is not a footballer, Sadler is average, Bromby a steady eddy with no pace, get one of one with any of those and your in with a shout if you have pace. Eustace was poor, legs have gone, Mahon was a better player (whilst not great).
Ref was poor, nothing wrong with goal !!!

What concerns me is the style of football. I can barely recall a game this season (after Johnson left) that i enjoyed.Should Aidy go? Hull claim to be a decent footballing side- crap ,they were bully boys who cheated most of the game and apart from our mistakes, didnt look like they would do anything.
Phil Brown is a joke with lovely brown shoes - worse than warnock for being a whinging prat.
Crowd was great today, nothing wrong with our disallowed goal, ref is a **** who bottled all major decisions. Didnt even give a card for grabbing Eustace round neck, or flying in on Lee. Frazier Cambell is a jumped up arrogant prat.
I was right behind Myhill when he saved Sadler's volley, i was celebrating already - great save. Proud of the team, i think they did well and were unjustly dealt with.
Hull are a bunch of prats who will sink faster than Derby if they make it.

Still sticking with the fact that we played well today, but one swallow doesnt make a summer (I think thats how it goes?).

We have been poor this season, with that we all agree.

I personally dont go with this view of 'going up despite the consequences'. Smoe say think of the money?. Is that what it's come to..money?.

We had money when we came down and one way or another it was pssed it down the drain. We, the fans deserve more than that. Would you really want to assist propping up the club with your hard earned money, if you saw us getting tonked every week in the Premiership?. Where is the enjoyment in that?.

The main thing is we all love our club but surely we want some enjoyment along-the-way.

I was proud of the team today but also thought A/ We are not good enough to go up B/ How many of those players would be wearing the shirt next time we see them at the Vic.

My feelings are Lee will lose his place, Shittu,NE,Demerit,Pr
iskin will leave for pastures new. That leaves Doyley to be dropped 'big time'and the rest will still be around. So a lot of newcomers expected either inbound or through the ranks.

I also feel I've seen Aidy for the last time at the vic.Time will tell.

We lost because the referee was the poorest I have seen since Rob Styles. In fact, he was worse than Rob Styles! Shittu's goal was a good one and unfairly disallowed.

We came down from Leeds... no relation at all to this hornetjack WUM and were gutted by the empty seats etc.... but no further comment on that in this posting.... Shittu's goal should have stood, all commentators say that. Friends who watched up here on TV said a draw would have been fair based on the play.. BUT we let in two soft goals... no excuse end of story....

After wednesday a real need to regroup for next season... but will wait till then as there is a slim chance we can turn this around as Hull are not that good a team are they....

Do you not find it emabbarrisng having a manager wear a full nylon asda suite! but then where you come from it is probably the trend!!

The future is bright the future is black and amber.

Watford a small town with a population of 80,000 and surrounded by premiership and other championship clubs. Hull a city I believe with nothing close by for attendance competition, the empty seats were disaapointing but as a true fan I would rather they were empty than have the poisonous twars sitting in them that have been there all season. The best team will win the play off if its us we will be punching above our weight again if its you good luck and enjoy the premiership. Just remember before you slag off our stadium that is falling down it was not very long ago you were playing in a **** hole to...you were lucky you had a rich foriegner to help you out, we had a foreigner called vialli who wasted all oyr money and we have only just recovered. Most fans seemed pretty relaxed after the game. We'd turned in our best home performance this side of Christmas, against a very decent team that we outplayed for periods of the game. Myhill was fantastic, a wrongly disallowed goal,a sending off, and two howlers at the back. So Aidy....are you gonna lump it to Doris on Wednesday night and create nothing or pick the same team and create a lot of chances? If you do the former, you can have my season ticket for next year back. I've moaned all year on this site that most other Championship managers would get more out of our players than you do. I was wrong. YOU could get it out of them. We PLAYED, yes PLAYED, really well yesterday. Created more chances that the last 3 games put together, and that's with 2 central midfield players who are defensive. So why the HELL have we had to put up with your dross all season, when on the evidence of yesterday we could have played most teams off the park? Jeez.

Some real numpty comments from both Hull and Watford fans. Why don't you just get on with talking about football and stop the insults?

Glad to see Aidy has lodged an appeal about the sending off. If it is upheld then that would be good, if not perhaps we could bring Williams in - I gather he is still in training. Please don't bring back Darius, as we played some very good football without him. I would like to see Priskin start and continue in the same vein as he played on Sunday. I hope he is still with us next year, and leading the front line. If we keep the ball down he will be a good player and I think he is due a couple of goals very soon!!

If we play like we did yesterday, next season, then we will have a very good chance of automatic promotion - I can't see us beating Hull and if we do and we win the final then this team is not yet good enough to stay up - to be honest I don't think any of the 4 teams are. A season of blending a team to play like yesterday would be good for the team and the fans.

I hope DeMerit and Priskin stay. I would not be too upset if we lost: Poom, Ellington (I heard he could be in a player + swap for Earnshawe), Kabba, D.Henderson, Hoskins, Rinaldi (I like him but he has not kicked a ball in anger this season), Jackson and Francis.

I gather that with Foster signing a new contract at Man U that he may be available for loan again and that there is some interest in Stephen Wright, just released by Sunderland. Adam Johnson was also reported to be looking to move, but he may be available on loan again next season instead. If he is we could have a front 2 of Priskin and Smith with Johnson wide on the left and McAnuff switching to the right with Ainworth continuing to learn his trade and being used off the bench.

It is not all doom and gloom if we say down. My favourites to go up are former Watford boy Gary Johnson's Bristol City.

In answer to some of you 'Clappers' about my grandson.

My grandson bought the Man U shirt with his birthday money.

He has been a loyal supporter going to home and away games with his dad and sometimes me.

He has lost interest because of the dreadful performances dished up over the last 6 months.

Replaced by Man U. Why? Because of peer group pressure at school. Because they play attractive football. Because they win at home (and away)

Lesson for WFC and Hoofers - if you continue to dish up hoofball rubbish, you will lose your home support.

As a point of interest, my son aged 27years, has also given up on Watford because they play 'awful' football.

WFC have a duty to their supporters to provide them with the best possible entertainment/footba
ll within their means. They have failed miserably this season and these are the consequences - 14700 to watch the most important home game of the season.

if they were your 3 best players then you have serious problems ahead. They were taken off because there geriatric legs couldnt take the runaround you northern tw^ts were getting. Log back on Weds night. 3-1 to the golden boys and a penalty shoot out victory, bring it on!!!

To my old mates the Miserable Boo'ers that believe they know all the answers, could you PLEASE finally answer my previous posts asking for you to outline your plans to change WFC to your vision.

So far, all I can work-out is that you want Aidy sacked, the coaching staff sacked, the vast majority of the squad sold or sacked, the board sacked and the Club moved to a brand new 60,000 seat stadium to accommodate Champions League football within six months!!

I get the impression you forget we have a core support of about 8,500-10,000, have played in the top flight of the English League for some 12 seasons out of 127, rely on developing our own youth players to balance the books, are a town of around 80,000 one hour away from London's Prem & CCC clubs, etc.

I'd love to know who you will bring in to run the football side, who's going to manage the business setup, what players you'll bring in, what your success criteria are, how you propose to fund this plan, etc.

Go on, give us all the benefit of your insight.

I suspect none of you have thought little further than your next cheap, self-edifying insult.

Hexham Hornet, Hexham says...

Good post WFC. As a realist I must say that the Aidy nout brigade have no idea. If they were Man U fans when SAF started they would have had him out after 3 trophyless seasons, and he hasn't done badly since.

I feel the backroom staff is too large and should be reduced, I also feel Aidy needs a goood and experienced No2. It has been said that Aidy would not accept a No2, but I think he can be shown how that can benefit him and reminded how we have performed sincehe lost KB.

If he decides to go then I would like to see us bring in John Ward - Carlisle played good football last night, keeping it on the ground always looking for the spare player, covering when a player moves out of position. Many of the current squad could play that way - look how well they played on Sunday as poof of this. I hope Aidy starts to get them playing that way again for the whole of next season and stops this hitting it up to the big man as we have seen that this does not work. I don't want Aidy to go, but am willing to accept that if he does then there are good alterntives available. If he goes it should be because another club comes in for him and has to pay us compensation, which we can then use to get a replacement.

Is that the kind of insightyou are looking for WFC, even though it is not from a "Miserable Boo'er"?

WFC & Proud, Watford says...
2:35pm Tue 13 May 08

Spot on, Hexham.

Beauty of your suggestion is it doesn't change WFC's off-field business model, youth policy, etc so it's sustainable.

I really hope Aidy stays to the end of his 2010 contract. In view of his successful two full seasons after saving us from League 1 in his first three months, this was going to be the first season he could be judged; I don't think 6th place in a very competitive & cut-throat CCC is that bad.

I'm realistic enough to be less than happy about the style of play, performances or results since October but that's balanced by Harefield Academy in terms of how they're playing football to suggest a better future. Most of that is attributable to Aidy's insistence on trialling new ideas.
I do believe he lost some of his self-confidence in terms of making decisions during matches but that's understandable as he's now in only his third season as a manager.
As for rumours, I heard a great one the other day: Sir Elton is buying the Club again and installing Pat Rice as director of football! Personally, I can't see it as I'm sure I recollect SEJ said he had other priorites (e.g. his AIDS trust) but the Pat Rice appointment could be really good for us.

As a possible post-Aidy replacement, how about Vic Akers? His footballing results with Arsenal Ladies have been superb and I reckon he could be a surprise package (no pun intended!)
