Fans near the directors’ box in the former Main Stand could have been forgiven for being a little more distracted than normal when Watford faced Notts County at Vicarage Road in 1983.
The sight of Elton John sitting close by had become a regular occurrence when he was not away touring but every so often the Hornets chairman would be joined by one of his famous friends to take in a game.
On Saturday, September 10, 1983, a Watford Observer photographer captured Rod Stewart sat between manager Graham Taylor and his fellow music legend to watch as goals from John Barnes, Charlie Palmer and George Reilly fired the Hornets to their first victory of the season by beating the Magpies 3-1.
The big Celtic fan, who is among the best selling artists of all-time, was seen a number of times with Elton at Vicarage Road during the 1970s and 80s, the two legends having appeared on stage together at a concert in the stadium in 1974.
