BOREHAM WOOD have bounced back from the disappointment of losing George Borg to Hornchurch in May by appointing Steve Browne as their new manager.

Browne has a good pedigree after leading Slough Town to fourth place in the Ryman League Division One North last season, but resigned earlier in the summer after relations with some members of the club had broken down.

After meeting with Boreham Wood chairman Danny Hunter, it was agreed Browne would take the job on a six-week 'probationary' period for both parties, after which they would review the situation.

Said Browne: "There have been lots of comings and goings on the management front, but that doesn't frighten me.

"I didn't have a contract at Slough and if you're doing your job properly there shouldn't be a problem.

"Danny's said he wants me here for two years, and I am in total control of the football side of things, from the first team down to the youth team.

"I'm bringing some of my own staff in with me, and I've been given a budget to improve the squad because obviously a lot of work needs to be done on the playing front."

Browne met his new squad for the first time on Monday, when he told them pre-season would start on Monday, June 30.

"It's nice and early, but we have to create a good atmosphere here at the club before the season starts," he explained.

"One or two players are disillusioned at being relegated and other things that have happened, so I have to give those players a lift and tell them to be positive."

Meanwhile, Wood hope that building work on their new changing rooms and all-weather pitch will begin at the end of July.

This is subject to a grant from the the Football Foundation, whose decision Hunter was anxiously waiting on this week.
