Three tries in the last ten minutes condemned Saracens to yet another defeat at London Wasps this afternoon.

The Men in Black looked poised to seal their first win at Wasps for 11 years when Noah Cato scored to help put them into a 17-9 lead. But another capitulation, much like at London Irish last month, in a five minute spell at the death left Saracens to ponder a deflating 33-24 defeat at Adams Park.

Eddie Jones made two changes to the side which eased past Bayonne last week. Glen Jackson was recalled in place of Gordon Ross and Andy Farrell returned for Adam Powell.

The Guinness Premiership champions dominated the opening exchanges and it was no surprise when Danny Cipriani fired them in front with a close range penalty after five minutes. Saracens responded immediately through Jackson’s penalty. Cipriani should have restored Wasps’ lead but he missed the target from another penalty.

The visitors conceded another penalty after 12 minutes and Cipriani made no mistake as he gave Wasps a 6-3 advantage. The Men in Black were reduced to 14 men after 18 minutes when Wickus van Heerden was sin binned for persistent breakdown offences. But Cipriani lashed the penalty attempt wide of the posts.

Sarries were handed a chance to draw level in the 32nd minute from an offside and Jackson’s penalty narrowly crept over the bar to make it 6-6.

Wasps were awarded another penalty on the stroke of half-time and Cipriani kept his composure to hand the hosts a deserved lead at the break. Jackson spurned a chance to draw the sides level when his penalty drifted wide.

Tom Palmer was sin binned five minutes into the second half for holding on in the tackle. Jackson kicked over the penalty by bringing the visitors level. And Sarries took full advantage of the extra man by taking the lead through Cato’s try. Alex Goode floated pass into the wing’s hands and his speed took him past the home defence and over the line in the left-hand corner. Jackson missed the conversion but the Men in Black’s bright start to the second half had turned the match around.

Cato’s kick forward caused all sorts of problems for Lachlan Mitchell and as the wing tackled him he earned a penalty. Jackson easily fired over to extend Saracens’ lead to eight points.

The hosts kept themselves in contention with a penalty by replacement Dave Walder in the 68th minute. Sarries’ run of clean sheets lasted nearly four matches but they were finally breached in the 74th minute when Rob Hoadley dived over after sustained home pressure. Walder converted to regain the slender lead for Wasps.

Saracens’ misery was sealed within minutes when Cato’s clearance was charged down by Paul Sackey and the England star ran through to score the decisive second try. Walder converted for the hosts. A manic five minute spell was sealed when Josh Lewsey rampaged through the visitors’ defence to add Wasps’ third try. Walder added another two points to compound Sarries’ woes. A last-gasp try from Cato was a mere consolation after another hugely disappointing trip to Wasps for Saracens.
