WATFORD are hoping on an outside chance of securing an experienced right-sided player on loan in time for tomorrow's (Saturday, September 13) game. Ray Lewington, already depleted by injuries and a supension, has been looking to replace the loss of Jimmy Davis.

He had Kevin Harper lined up but the Portsmouth man went to Norwich City instead. Now he has targeted an experienced player who, it is understood, was once the target of a previous Watford bid.

Lewington was frustrated by Harper's decision to join Norwich as opposed to Watford. The 27-year-old Scot, star of Pompey's race to the Division One title last season, was set to join the Hornets on return from duty with the Scotland squad.

"We tried to get him on loan, while with Scotland. It was the back end of last week and we were very pleased with the deal," said the manager. "Then his agent called and said the manager at Portsmouth preferred him to go to Norwich. It was very confusing.

"We quite fancied him, playing wide right and we had everything arranged for him to come."
