My First Day

Malky Mackay expected to be unveiled as Watford manager next week

Malky Mackay could be unveiled as the new Watford manager as early as Monday, the Watford Observer understands.

The Hornets received around 70 applications for the post but we expect Mackay to be given the job on a permanent basis following his short spell in charge in November after Aidy Boothroyd’s departure.

Watford will not comment on which clubs or managers have been approached but we understand that Mackay had an interview at the club on Tuesday.

Chairman Jimmy Russo would not comment on who would be taking over the club but he did say they “expect to make an announcement early next week”.

He added: “I have spent since Brendan Rodgers’ departure talking to various parties about the possibility of becoming the Watford manager.

“We have been very pleased with how the process has been going.”

When Mackay was in temporary charge last year, Sean Dyche was his number two and the Scot may decide to promote the former centre-back, who is Reserve team boss, once more.

Watford chairman Jimmy Russo said Graham Taylor would be influential in the decision-making process and we understand the club are keen for Mackay to have a more experienced head as part of the backroom staff.

Two obvious candidates would be Taylor’s former assistant manager John Ward, who is without a club after leaving Oldham Athletic in November, and Keith Burkinshaw, who Mackay brought back to the club when he was interim boss.

Betting on who would become the next Watford manager was suspended on Wednesday afternoon after large sums were put on Mackay taking over at Vicarage Road, although the markets re-opened yesterday (Thursday).

Mackay has been favourite for the job for most of the past week, since Rodgers’ departure for Reading, but former Hornet Andy Hessenthaler was also heavily backed.

Hessenthaler has led Dover Athletic to the Conference South after back-to-back promotions and has more managerial experience than Mackay after four years as Gillingham’s player-manager.

However, Hessenthaler seemed to rule himself out of the running on Wednesday.

He told the East Kent Mercury: “I can assure everyone that I’m fully focused on Dover Athletic and next season.

“Since Brendan Rodgers left Watford, I’ve received telephone calls and texts from people connected with the club [Dover] and I’ve told them that I’m staying put.

“All my thoughts are on Dover and the challenge that Conference South football will bring next season.”

One manager who has publicly stated that Watford showed an interest in him is Andy Scott, who led Brentford to the League Two title this year.

Scott refused to rule out a move to Vicarage Road but it seems unlikely that he had an interview with the club as he is on holiday in the United States.

He told the Hounslow Chronicle: “I’m aware Watford have shown an interest, but I’m not going to speculate until I’m told otherwise.

“I’m young and ambitious and want to manage at Championship and Premier League level.

“But I’m contracted to Brentford, and am busy looking at what players I’m bringing in for next season.”

As expected, a host of names have been linked with the Watford manager’s job, including Dennis Wise, who reportedly applied for the post.

Along with Mackay and Hessenthaler, former Watford players Nigel Gibbs and Tony Coton were also linked with the vacancy.

Gibbs has only a couple of weeks left on his Reading contract, although Rodgers is believed to have offered him another deal.

Coton, meanwhile, feels he is ready for management and is believed to have been interviewed for the job when Boothroyd left.

After 11 years as Manchester United’s goalkeeping coach, he has an excellent relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson.

If MM does get the job, well done to him and I think a just reward for the loyalty he has shown the club up to now. An experienced 'old head' will be essential, he must be fully aware of the pitfulls that await and the danger of adopting an 'I don't need advice, I know it all' approach, so those named would seem amply qualified for the post of advisor (plus they wouldn't be sneaking off to watch Chelsea games every week). Lets now see if the board can do some good wheeler dealering to keep the club afloat and the creditors off our back, and lets see if we can get some good free agent or loan deals in place!

Maybe we could get Coton into to replace Dyce as Reserves manager. Best of both worlds, he gets to cut his teeth in management and we get his 'contacts' at Man Utd - I hear Tevez is still looking for a club?

Fingers crossed its true.

Malky deserves a shot and either Ward, KB or Terry Burton with him would be great.

If this is true I will be pleased. Personally, I had my doubts when he first took over for that short spell from Boothroyd, however he has earned the right to get the chance out of loyalty alone. The team certainly improved whilst he had the reins. With the right support, as in a Ward/Burkinshaw type figure I think he would do a decent job. Interesting new signing in Severin as well; he was highly rated in Scotland and a good 'freebie' who should add a bit of guile to the midfield.

yes i wish MM well too ,this guy knows what it takes to get teams promoted having been captain of Norwich, west ham and Watford when they all made it to premiership ,only player ever to achieve this so far ,he has assisted AB very well ,did decent job in temporary role AND remember he was the one to first try and put Lloydinho to left back Before Two Face Rodgers appeared on the scene and changed it only to go back to it , i wonder why MM obviously had a word !! he played all but one of his games as manager away and without doubt his one and only home game in charge was a terrific thrashing of QPR , I hope KB returns with him and he is given a decent chance without all our best players being sold from beneath him hope you are listening in the boardroom!!! ,anyway good luck MM hope to see another successful scottish manager do the business ,like Ferguson ,Moyes,CoyleFerguson jnr and mcleish who all had very good seasons last season !

What a suprise! Well done MM. I think the fact we signed Severin was the concrete evidence we needed that MM was getting the job. Well respected in the game and far more experienced than when AB and ####### took over. I think the really crucial thing is not so much who is in charge but what players there come start of 09/10. Anyway good luck to MM when this is confirmed. I have a mate who is a reading fan and thinks ####### will royally screw things up and another who is a QPR fan and he is crapp1ing himself. So its not just us Golden Boys that are worried. I guess thats what you call being a fan?! Everything matters. HAve a lovely weekend everybody.

This will turn out to be disasterous.
The new board have shown how clueless they are by just appointing the dullard who played a major part in Hoofers final year.
If he was any good then BR would have attempted to take him to Reading with him.
I can only see relegation now and, perhaps,we'll appoint a better option in 12 months time.
Of course I hope I'm wrong and MM is a roaring success but both him and the Russos don't inspire any confidence in me.

I fear the worse, why appoint BR when Malky was managing before,if he was that good what was the point.Sorry Malky, but second rate manager, second rate team, spells another season struggling in the lower reaches of the division.

TBH with having to sell players we might not be great been great whoever the manager is and well I suppose we have to support Malky if he is the manager anyway.

Sounds like John Ward will come in as assistant.

The safe and obvious choice. Lets stop kidding ourselves, we have no money and I believe that Malky will prove to be a very shrewd choice. What really worries me is, whats going on in the back ground. Permanent good employees are leaving or being shoved out by staff that dont have a clue. What we see on the surface does not reflect whats really going on with this club. The fire sale has really started!

If he is to be appointed,I am really pleased for Mackay, he deserves his crack at it and did a good job when he stood in at the end of last year. He has had good and bad examples of managers to learn from and no-one can argue that he is committed to the club which after his predecessor is important to us all. It's sad that people come on here and start posting predictions of doom, gloom and relegation before a manager has even started. Either get behind your manager, board, team and club and start trying to look for positives or f*@k off up the M1 to J11 and start supporting those non-league losers, who are really worthy of your special negative brand of support!! I spoke to Richard Lee last week and asked who the players wanted. He said they all wanted Malky. Speaks volumes that they are happy to play under him. Was also up in Glasgow Wednesday night and was chatting to a few Celtic fans about Malky. They didn't want him to leave but always thought he would make a great manager one day. Perhaps that day has come.

He's definately my choice but am a bit worried about his "connections" in the footballing world but then again he must have made plenty of friends at Celtic, Norwich and West Ham.

Good luck Malky.....First 6 games are crucial but you've got my support.

Malky deserves the opportunity and I wish him well.
When BR deserted I
hoped MM would get the job with Sean Dyche as no 2.John Ward joining would be fine but he would need to be clear that he reports to the manager not GT.
KB has been good for us but at 70plus we now need to move on.
I feel sorry for Malky because a number of his best players are inevitably going to be sold to help ensure the club's survival.
I hope all the genuine supporters will support him through what will be a VERY difficult period.
If we stay out of the bottom six this year he will have done a great job. Hopefully some of the academy kids will come though during the next two or three years but if they don't then we might need to close it. It has to justify its cost just like everything else at Vicarage Road

I say bad news in my opinion. I don't think that Mackay is strong enough for Championship football management. Me person would go for someone with more managerial experience. I know that both Aidy Boothroyd and Brendan Rodgers did a fantastic keeping us in the Championship and suprisingly getting us in the premier league respectivly but i don't think we try an untested manager for the 3rd time.

Give Malky a chance. How can you start calling him a 2nd rate manager before even the 1st match of the season! If you support Watford then show some support and get behind the manager and the team. Personally I think Malky was the right man for the job and wish him the best of luck.

Fair play to MM. I believe he will be loyal & will steady the ship & will hopefully help us finish in a respectable position in the league next season. He deserves his chance & got a couple of good results when in charge briefly so the players are obviously happy to give it their all for him.

Lets be clear about this.

The academy has produced what is now nearly half the first team as well as Ashley Young, our biggest sale to date. Christ knows what talent is gestating at our new Hatfield facility.

We have little / zero money to buy players and without BR, the loan situation is all of a sudden, a very very dark place. Whatever one thinks of him now, his radar would have been priceless.

To remove the very womb of the club - the academy - would be suicide.

If MM gets the job it is because he is the cheapest option not because he is the best man. The fact we have approached clubs suggest MM is not first choice unfortunately any club wanting compensation for their manager puts that individual beyond our means. I hope Gibbs gets a role as joint Manager / assistant but I guess the ball is in his court

Whoever the board appoint, I will support their choice. To some, MM is seen as the cheap option. To others, a player who knew what winning was with three sucessive promotions to the aprem with West ham, Norwich and Watford. He was also a Celtic player (no easy thing) and a Scotland International. It did seem that for the few games he was in charge last season that the boys did have an extra bit about them. So, if it is MM very best of luck mate and genuine good wishes. As is often, there is a fair bit of doom on here, obviously Reading will be linked to us with several players and if BR really starts to play dirty it will simply be a case of who the club feel they can afford to let go - not just financially, but from a survival and building process. We will lose some players, all teans do and yes some will be unpopular sales. All of that said, we have signed Aberdeens Captain, the first signature in the off-season and not a bad one at all. I an sure, above all else that GT and others will do everything they can to steady this club and take us forward. It may well take time, but in the current economic climate they are being prudent, I would call it wise. We all want our Watford FC to survive don't we? Please get behind the team and the new man at the helm.

Malky gets my vote. With our limitations with regard finance and star studded talent (sorry guys no one stands out) we need that unquantifiable quality which I witnessed during Malky's brief time in charge. That is; the way he commanded the "technical area" and the respect that players seemed genuinely to have for him was as good as having a 12th man on the pitch.
As for that **** D. Wise, I hope that was just a sick joke. Next we'll be told a certain Vincent Jones is in the running. Only joking!
