My First Day

Watford announce former Celtic, West Ham and Norwich defender Malky Mackay as manager

Watford have announced that Malky Mackay is their new manager.

Mackay, who has been first-team coach at the club since retiring in 2008, has signed a three-year contract.

The Hornets had a four-man selection panel to appoint Brendan Rodgers’ replacement, consisting of chairman and vice chairman Jimmy and Vince Russo, chief executive Julian Winter and Watford legend and board member Graham Taylor.

Mackay is currently gaining his Pro License with the Scottish FA and is understood to be at the European Under-21 Championships in Sweden at the moment as part of a case study.

We understand the 37-year-old had two interviews last week on Tuesday and Friday and should return by Wednesday for his press conference.

His backroom staff has not been announced yet but we believe assistant Academy manager Sean Dyche will be promoted as his assistant manager.

Dyche was Mackay’s number two when the Scot was interim boss following Aidy Boothroyd’s departure in November, when Watford won two and drew one of the five games while Mackay was in charge.

There are also suggestions that Brian Greenhalgh, who was chief scout under Taylor, may be returning in some capacity.

Mackay has a wealth of playing experience with Celtic, Norwich, West Ham and of course Watford.

He also played for his country three times.

He told the club’s website: “I’m absolutely delighted to get the job.

“I’ve been planning for a few years with the aim of eventually becoming a first team manager.

“I couldn’t have had any better grounding than what I’ve had at Watford over the last four years or so in the various roles I’ve undertaken.

“Now I’m just looking to the future and I can’t wait for pre-season to begin so we can get to work on the training pitch.”

The Hornets' chairman Jimmy Russo said the board was unanimous in their vote for Mackay.

Russo said: “Malky has all the attributes to be a good manager, he has great leadership skills and crucially gives us continuity at the club.

“He inherits a good set-up and I’m sure he can build on that. Malky is his own man and proved himself in the interview, overall I’m delighted with the appointment.”

Watford fans were angered by Rodgers, following his departure 11 days ago, as he had previously stated his “loyalty” to Watford and that people shouldn’t “question his integrity”.

Mackay says Watford fans will not have to worry about that with him.

He told Sky Sports News: "I can bring an honesty and an integrity to Watford.

"I know the club inside out and I've been in the Championship for 10 years now and know everything about it.

"I know how the players at the club tick. I was caretaker manager about six months ago so I feel I can bring a fresh approach.

"I've been working towards this for the last six years and am looking forward to the challenge."

Only time will tell if he is the right man, but he deserves the chance to show what he can do. He certainly improved the team in the few games he had in charge last season. Let’s get behind him and hope that he can keep the players he wants to build his team.

Please laddie hornets and WD18 FIRM get your facts right MM was overlooked by the previous board made up of Simpson Cashton and Wilson they appointed Judas ,who said MM was specialist defence coach ? think you have been listening to too much of Boothroyds spin trying to blame MM for his failings .BACK MM at this time he is the right time as i have said previously Scotts manager's have a habit of doing well just look at Ferguson snr and jnr ,Owen Coyle,David Moyes Alec mcleish who all did well last season !!!

As stated above this board did not appoint Brendan. They took over after he had been given the job. In his 5 games in charge he chaged our style of play and won 2 lost 2 and drew 1. Not bad considering he was left with a team clearly struggling for confidence

Hopefully the board will be able to comment on a further spudge in season ticket sales following the on the whole positive comments on here and other boards for Malky. If he can turn into as successful a scottish born manager as some of the others that have been listed above - then we might just have a chance - and also I hope that means he'll be frugal in shelling out the sheckels and looking for a bargain in the markets - If Severin works out well, then that's a good start!

Lets hope MM enjoys his new job, I think it will be a difficult few years, but I expect the team will survive in the Championship. Lets hope Boothroyd gets the West Brom job and decides that Ellington would be just what they need to return to the Premiership. The key question is however has MM worked out his style of play and a way to build a midfield that helps defend our goal, without Cork;, L Williamson or Eustace. Perhaps Gunnarson returning from Reading?

Hope Malky and Sean make a good go of it, Good to see continuity hopefully leading to stability, My concern would be that if Malky, god bless his Scottish socks was the most outstanding, who the F&&k else applied, glad to see Barnsey back in management and even gladder it's not at Watford, this sentimentality for old players who have left etc becoming our Manager is tiresome, and why does anyone want to see Gunnarson back, didn't he have a knee injury !!! Plus Judas is his new boss so let him stew, infact let them all stew in the leprechaun's deceit.

It would be interesting to see who had applied, and I'm sure that will get sniffed out and released over the next few days. But even then will it make any difference? Do we really need the board to have to justify why they turned down every other applicant, when predominantly the answer will be 1) they are rubbish, 2) they gave a rubbish interview, 3) we could not afford the compo to get them 4) they were dennis wise.

MM is now the man with the full board backing, I reckon with him managing and offering player choices to the board to do the buying and dealing, we have as good as we can hope for at the present time. We just need a billionaire backer to help us out - oh I was forgetting we have one don't we!

Hexham Hornet, HEXHAM says...
3:55pm Mon 15 Jun 09

Now they have appointed a manager it will be interesting to see who he has working with him. Will he bring back KB or will GT fill that role or is there someone else in the wings? Will Sean Dyche be reserve coach or go up to help with 1st team affairs? Will Malky get the chance to get those he wants to stay on new contracts so we don't lose them now or as a free at the end of the season? Does he have the backing from all the players? He did before BR came, but there have been many changes since then. Who else is he hoping to bring in - it would appear that Severin is definitely his decision - and has JR managed to get some funds from Lord A to get these players?

Congratulations MM, you have shown us loyalty since you first arrived and I hope you get it repaid in a very long and successful run with us.

Well at least the Russo's have been true to their word. Get rid of the high earners and bring in the cheap version. I am afraid MM falls into that catagory. He was probably the cheapest applicant. Having said all that he has my support as he will start with his hands tied behind his back and that will not be easy as he will probably start without five / six of last years finishing Team. Good luck mate you will certainly need it.

Feff, Rickmansworth says...
5:04pm Mon 15 Jun 09

Of course we all wish Malky the best of luck. BUT do realise he will have to sell and has no money to buy, probably even after selling! If he can keep us in the Championship he will have done a good job. The Russos have brought hardly any money into the Club. Sir EJ evidently does not want to put any more into it. Give MM a chance. Sadly, he may be onto a loser, and he'll have to fight, fight, fight.

Good grief - what a lot whingeing about an appointment that could have been a lot worse! Malky may not be Guus Hiddink but he knows the club, knows the players (including the wasters that need to be got rid of-I'm looking at you Will Hoskins) and most importantly knows he has sod all money and has gone into this with his eyes open. He's done well as caretaker - in fact if memory serves we started keeping clean sheets and winning away when he was in charge. The Russo's will get accused of taking the cheap option but in case you hadn't noticed we only have the cheap option to take! For those who wanted the big name appointment, last time we did that we ended with a bald Italian who saddled us with years of debt and that didn't work so well. Forget the doom mongering - everyone starts with 0 points next season and we aren't a bad team. So get behind Malky and the boys and remember - it could have been Dennis Wise!!

I think Gus Poyet or Dennis Wise would have been a far better appointment with their proven management experience.Obviously you cannot blame Malky for grabbing it with both hands,it is a decent living for him and he will try very hard.At the end of the day,the Board have done things on the cheap yet again.
Best of luck Malky, should finish near the top 10 anyway.

Cheap because we don't have the money to get any with great "experience" (not that Poyet and Wise have a great deal apart from spells with Leeds and the latter at Millwall)

Henry VIII, Hampton Court says...

Persoanlly I am behind the board and Malky 100%. It seems that there are many fans out there who fall into one of two categories. Either they see this as a cheap option, fogetting this club is in serious financial binds and there was no other option available. Or that they think we are the only club in financial difficulties. The current rate at which money in football is expanding is not sustainable and there will be casualties. Southampton are an example but will be followed by others in the next few years. For all the criticism that fans seem to want to aim at this and previous boards, I personally am grateful that we have leadership that is trying it's best to lead us to survival. We are Watford FC, a small club on the fringe of London, competing for attendencies at every home game against some very big clubs. I want Watford to still be here in ten years time, when in all likelihood there will be two professional divisions with the lower leagues going semi-pro. Good luck Malky and I hope you get the support from the fans that your team mates evidently are already doing. I am looking forward to next season so much now, warts an' all. My prediction: Reading (A) first game of the season, Reading (H) Boxing Day.
