My First Day

Watford had four candidates but Malky Mackay only one interviewed

There were four candidates for the Watford manager’s job but Malky Mackay was the only person interviewed by the club.

The Hornets’ chief executive Julian Winter also admitted the board had already identified Mackay as their next manager before Brendan Rodgers’ departure on June 4.

Chairman Jimmy Russo, brother and vice chairman Vince, Winter and Watford legend and director Graham Taylor made up the selection committee which appointed Mackay.

Winter told the club’s website: “He had already been identified as a potential successor and as such was in poll position for the role.

“We have established a succession plan at the club and that has included planning for our next manager.

“We have been active setting up structures and management functions on the football side of our business that allows the manager to focus on first team affairs and that in part has enabled us to identify the next manager from within.

“We aim to develop staff at all levels of the club and it was right that Malky was placed in poll position for the job.”

Mackay was previously first-team coach at Watford and was interim manager when Aidy Boothroyd left in November and Winter believes the Scot did well to stabalise the club.

He said: “It was in the plan and we had earmarked Malky as the future manager here at the club “I don’t think anybody expected Brendan to leave so soon, however this is why we have these plans in place.

“We believe that Malky has all the credentials to move us forward and stamp his authority on the team.

“On a personal note, I’m looking forward to working closely with him and we of course wish him all the success for the future as he leads the first team forward.

“Malky did tremendously well to stabalise the club back in November during his role as caretaker manager and he showed plenty of first-class managerial qualities during that period too.”

Despite only interviewing Mackay, Winter believes the club have employed the right person.

He said: “We interviewed Malky and it was clear we had an outstanding candidate. His preparation was first-class and he knows the club very well.

“Malky knows the structure in place at the club and he demonstrated to all the committee his commitment to the cause and his vast industry knowledge to take on the managerial role at Watford.”

He added: “His understanding of the Championship is superb. Malky has spent 10 years in this league and knows the players and managers well.

“His achievement of three promotions as a player is incredible and above everything else he is hungry for success as a manager and wants to prove himself to everyone connected with this club.

“Malky had also been involved [in his old role as first team coach] in helping shape the club’s new five-year plan which maps out realistic aims for everyone to achieve.

“He is at the forefront of that plan now and we are all excited about the immediate and long term future at Watford.”

Mackay has signed a three-year contract as manager of Watford.

Winter said: “All the board is very, very happy with the appointment of Malky.

“He knows the club inside out and is fully aware of our important place in the community, the emphasis we have on our Academy and bringing through home-grown talent, as well as improving the senior professionals on a day-to-day basis to compete in the Championship.

“Malky has spent time learning his trade at Watford and is now ready for his next challenge.”

Well lets hope we who follow the team feel the same way in the future, I just hope Malky is given the money and support from the top brass to sse us at the top and not in Div 1 next year.

have to say although pleased MM got job, i am very concerned and now quite deflated that the message sent out of only interviewing one person sends ,there will be many fans concerned that MM will accept everything he is told to do and is the cheap option ,although i stop short of saying he could become a puppet of the board as i do not think that is what MM would tolerate i am very concerned he was so set on wanting the job he will keep quiet as the board sell our best players ,will be watchin Mr Russo's very carefully!

What money...

Don't expect much to spend and well I would take mid-table enxt season.

Don't have a problem with them interviewing one person for the job if they had already earmarked that person, but, a bit surprised that they went public on that info. Still, lets look forward to August and get behind OUR team!!

I can't believe I've just read that!
Now they've had the audacity to come out and admit what they've done I feel I can comment, this defies all logic........
This is an utter outrage to a) us supporters who thought there was a procedure taking place to identify the best candidate.
b) to all the ex managers that took time to send in their applications.
c) to wait so long announcing their intentions.
When the board say's it's happy with this thought process is not strictly true, 'tis the reason why GT has gone on record saying it will be the boards fault if this goes belly up, where are all the other board members we've been told that are joining?

Is anyone in line to take MM position already. SD....John Ward, in time?
For those that questioned me saying this was the cheap option, hang your heads and for those that are being dragged along with all the spin regarding the club finances please refer back to the time when Sir GS said we don't have any material debt it's actually true, it's the fact that the day to day running of the clubs finances need to be addressed, we shouldn't be faced with losing ALL our best players!
Don't be taken in, you have already been with the season tickets but not again with anything else.
Remain sceptical as I am and don't trust the "R's" too much.

well well wellgood morning all now come lets not be churlish in this the first full working day of our new curate ..welcome or should i say well done on your promotion from asst curate..lets all get behind "malky" as he likes to be known and give him the support we, the senior clergy and u the congregation are so very good at when times prove tough.

i fear that this term is going to be a very trying time and we will be losing some very talented choristers as they move on to bigger choirs - so i am very sad to say that we might not see most of the following under our choirmistress this term so can i on behalf of most of the congregation say a big thank u to : tamas - well done and good luck , jay - u have been a stalwart ,and a real wrench this for tommy - what can one say after lloyd this bloke is like a stick of rock --watford stamped all the way through.

i along with many thank u for your efforts and wish u all the best.

and may i lastly like to float the idea as new captain adrian....u will prove to be a bigger diamond than u already have shown

Bishop. 4.51am posting? You've not been prowling around the graveyard in the moonlight have you? Very amusing stuff. Are the bats Pippestrelles? vOr...you are dishonest. You know KA was correct with the 10m to avoid administration don't you. He stood up to the dishonest 'future is rosy spin' and 'ring fenced' lies. You continue to spout the 'no material debt' lies. Why do youi waste your time? You and your mates are discredited. I do trust the current Board. Nothing wrong with promoting from within. I suppose you'd prefer the cronyism route. Good luck Malky and Sean D. Whatever the future holds at least we know we are in the hands of an honest regime.

The club said that he was in pole position, does not mean that they did not look at all the other applicants and they obviously did as they eventually had a shortlist of 4.

Dont know about the others on the panel well enough to comment on them but I cant see GT just rubber stamping a yes man either. the exact opposite in fact I think he would want someone who does know his own mind and stand up for what he wants but within the realistic circumstances the club is in. I think MM is a good choice and I like it that the club seem to want to promote continuation within the club. I was gutted when previous managers came in a got rid people like Jacket and Gibbs both of whom have done well elsewhere and both of whom would be amazing assets to the club right now.

Its a bit like shopping...if you are a woman ( take note VOR ) you see a pair of shoes you like, then proceed to spend the rest of the day looking at every other pair of shoes before you come back and buy the first pair..if you are a bloke you see what you need and you make a decisive decision there and then. Why waste your time interviewing a load of journey men when the best man for the job is right in front of you? Well done MM bring on the new season now otherwise I will be dragged around the shops again this weekend looking at more bloody shoes!!

The fact that the board has come out and said, we narrowed it down to one man and only he had the interview should at least say something about the board, they are prepared to inform the public of this and risk their ire. Was he the best choice - well since the criteria for that is wins and points in a lot of fans eyes (at any club) only time will tell. It is not unheard of for a job vacancy to have a preferred candidate, that is part of business, an employer still has to go through the process of looking at other applicants and if a stand out candidate comes along, consider given that person an interview. The board could choose to release the names of the applicants possibly, but I don't recall that ever being done in the past. OK so Swansea have named their short list of six, but it might be only 1 or 2 get to the interview stage.Having heard his first interview on Talk Sport this morning, Malky strikes me as knowing what to expect, knowing what he has to work with and having a plan for loans etc to move the club forward, not a bad first interview, and if some of what he said, was the board's views, then it suggests the boards also knows what problems they face. Good luck MM

What are people complaining about anyway? Before BR was appointed most were calling for MM to be given the role. Then after BR left many were again saying he should get it. He then gets appointed manager and people still complain. What do you want?

I reckon he had too much time on his hands staring up at those flying Pigs & pies whilst recuperating, or going round to any random person and saying "I'll rub your back if you'll rub mine" bet he had bother renting a bungalow in Dubai unless he's perched up on the heliport!
Anyway where's the proof, give me substantiated hard evidence then maybe, just maybe I'll reconsider, after all If he's done half the things he alleged are true then the old silver haired Fox would be doing a stretch by now.

If you're ever in Watford I'll buy you a glass of red whine, even hook your mobility scooter up to the tow bar and drop E.O off on route to Queen Langley.

1:43pm Wed 17 Jun 09

VoR I’m not going to make my post personal but are you deliberately trying to be controversial?

The previous regime ran this club into the ground with incredibly inept financial planning on the back of a gamble to return to the premiership at the first attempt. Whilst we would have all rejoiced had it worked they rightly fell on their sword when it failed.

You seriously can not blame anything on the Russo’s for trying to make a silk purse out of a Sow’s ear. MM got the job cos he was cheap end of. There was no other candidate as nobody else wanted the job. £50k PA I am told, peanuts, I wouldn’t want the job for that! Hess is on more at Dover and we couldn’t afford the compo for Tisdale.

As has been pointed out many wanted MM last time so they got their wish. Personally I think it’s a poisoned chalice many more players will be sold as yes Simpson lied to us. If you don't believe what you are hearing read the accounts, I think it says £13M debt with day to day operating losses so not sure how you can say we have no material debt, £13M is a lot in my book for a club with very little turnover and a playing squad worth only £6/7…

Tommy will go as will DeMerit and McAnuff (unless he agrees a reduced contract) possible Priskin too these are bleak times very bleak. WFC will do well to consolidate this year and survive whilst trying to balance the books we are in danger of being the next Norwich. This is Why Rodgers left no other reason, we moved the goalposts and he was lied to about the finances by, yes you guessed it, Simpson. I understand everybody being angry but lets target the right person.

Well VoR I did try telling that Muppet a year ago we were skint but he never listened, now it is all coming true. £50K PA I am reliably informed that that is exactly what MM is on. The same wage AB accepted when he first took over. There may be bonuses linked to performance but his basic is 50K. He may well turn out to be the best but today he is the cheapest option.

But lets be honest I very much doubt he would be able to turn his hands to much else would he
