Danny Graham set for Vicarage Road switch

Watford are poised to make Carlisle United striker Danny Graham their second signing of the summer, reports suggest.

The 23-year-old is said to have held talks with Hornets boss Malky Mackay after rejecting a new contract at Brunton Park at the end of last season.

The capture of Graham, who would follow Scott Severin to Vicarage Road, would not be a surprise because chairman Jimmy Russo told the Watford Observer last week that Watford were “very close” to signing a new forward.

Carlisle are entitled to compensation for the former Middlesbrough player because of his age, but it is reported that this may be settled by a tribunal because an agreement has yet to be reached by the two clubs.

Carlisle rejected a £250,000 offer for Graham from Huddersfield Town in January after he had scored 16 goals by the end of that month, but the former Darlington, Derby County, Leeds United and Blackpool loanee then failed to find the net in his last 18 appearances of the campaign.

Dosent really fill u with confidence - then again we can't afford anything better!

Well the last two strikers we got off Carlisle were fairly decent. I seem to recall they both scored in a playoff final as well (including arguably one of the best goals scored at Wembley by Nicky Wright). Lets hope Danny is cast from the same mould.

Either we get a cheap donkey (as is being suggested) or we buy an expensive one and then find we cannot unload him even for glue! No names just say he's a donkey with royal connections!. If the kid scored 16 goals in a month! he must have some ability. I suspect it will need a little digging to understand why he then could not produce any more - good grief if he kept that rate up he'd be on what 148 goals for a season - he'd be worth twice that for Ronaldo!

What would be nice to hear about is the back room staff, and then understand who is actually responsible for getting new players into the club.

I always feel happier when watford are looking for gems in the lower divisions. Hopefully GT's contacts in the game will help to unearth them.

This lad will need some time to settle. Hopefully the Vic Rd crowd will give him it...

so we offload a promising young striker who has scored goals at this level and is in demand ....and sign a striker for presumably more £££s who didn't score in the last 3rd of the season ? Bizarre....

I think this meant he had scored 16 goals for the season by the end of January worthing! Not 16 goals in the month of January! Man U would have signed him at that ratio!

Good point...guess we have to give the guys a chance but not the most exciting signing really.

Not that we can afford much.

I have never seen this bloke play, so can't comment. I had seen Nicky Wright and Smartie play before we signed them, so if he is of the same ability... well, it could be good. It could also be crap. Do any of us really have ANY idea on this one??!!

All i've heard is that he needs good service from corners/crosses (alla Hendo)but lacks skill at feet.

Could be worse i suppose.

The cklub are not in the position to spend money signing someone just for the sake of it so im sure they believe he can do a job for us in this league.

The fact that we do not have a lot of money but are at least spending some is good in the current climate to me. The John Ward connection is a good point, I wish the fans would show a little more faith before negativity. I recall when King was signed some thought he was passed his best, Hendo was a waste and Ellington would be great (include me on that last one!). I think we always owe it to every player we sign to give them a warm reception and above all a fair chance. I recall when GT signed George Reilly (part of the 84 Cup team legacy) from Cambridge, he was booed the first three games at Vicarage Road because it took him time to settle. We often talk of players being fickle and jumping from club to club, but at times we fans can be a bit fickle too. Personally I am really looking forward to the new season, a new structure, backroom staff, new manager and a few new faces. It just sounds solid and in these current times that's an excellent place to build on.

Didn't Priskin take time to settle and for all you old Bast**d's old Ross Jenkins was a bit of a washout for his first 20 odd games if I remember rightly.

On a separate note, I see the fraud that was Hoofers has again failed to get a job. Both West Brom and Motherwell saw through the son of Cashton

Quite right John. I was thinking exactly that when I read your posting. If I recall injuries and hitting the woodwork were Ross's early experiences. The fact that we both remember this may prompt some ageist nonsense from vOr but he should respect his elders...and superior intellects.

Johnjones1959,I qualify for an old B'st''d as I remember RJ spending most of his time on his a'se in his early games and look how he turned out, give the new lad a chance and get behind him and maybe just maybe...20 goals with the right service...this is the sort of signing we're in for now so get used to it!

Some of you lot would moan if we signed Ronaldo. The only people to blame for us having to search the bargain basement are VoRs heroes,Larry,Curly and the still unemployable Mo.Give him a chance for goodness sake.

My first post here but a Hornets fan since 1958.
Some new players, new management team and board, maybe some new bits for VR. Six weeks to go, can't wait.
If this new lad can show us he's excited about being here then we can give him some time to show us how good he is.
It's a long way from NZ so I can only get to a few matches each season but I look forward to watching him.

Other than our 2 brief spells in the Premiership haven't we more often than not purchased a number of our players from the lower leagues? - players like Kevin Phillips-Baldock Town, if I remember correctly, & Tommy Mooney-Southend United for example were fantastic. Other players more recently like Lee Williamson, Mike Wiliamson, Jay Demerit, Scott Loach etc have been good signings for the club. These types of players are definately worth a punt. Wages would usually be lower to begin with than an established player at our level & if it works out then we can sell on for profit &/or get good service from them.

As Reading have sold Kevin Doyle for £6.5m would it really surprise anyone if they make a £3m bid for Priskin and get him...? We need a replacement and for virtually **** all money we can get this young lad who scored 37 goals in 102 appearances at Carlisle we should give it a go. People need to be a bit more realistic we're not Real Madrid we're Watford... Up the orns!
