But fee below those already rejected by Hornets

Brendan Rodgers is set to win the race to sign Tommy Smith, it is being reported tonight.

The Reading Chronicle claims the Hornets' two-time Player of the Season is poised to turn down a move to Premiership new boys Wolves and could be reunited with his former manager at the Madejski Stadium within the next week for around £800,000.

However, this fee seemingly flies in the face of Watford’s stance over their talisman, because last week we reported that two seven-figure bids for last season’s top scorer had been rejected by senior Vicarage Road officials.

Smith was at London Colney today as the Hornets players returned for pre-season training.

Thats a disgraceful fee for the second best player in the league last year.

This is a great chance for the Russo's to show they understand the fans. I think we all know Tommy is going to leave this summer but if they are going to sell him to Reading then lets milk them for as much as we can (they've got at least 6 million in the bank). That 800,000 being bandied around could turn out to be more onve add-ons are paid out (appearances, goals scored etc etc). Also keep in mind that as good as he was last season he's 29 and in the last year of his contract. Even if he does go to Reading then we will just rip it out of him like we used to when he came back to the Vic with Sunderland and Derby!!

Smith doesnt have to move house if he signs for Reading, so no upheavel, hence he may prefer that option, but thats disrespectful to the club who can clearly get £200K - £500K more if he moves to Wolves or another ... plus he joins judas which also leaves a sour taste ....

Surely the Board will understand the issues here and NOT let Tom Smith go to Reading at any price? Surely?

The Board MUST understand this would be a HUGE slap in the face to the fans!

I have posted on here before that Tom WAS tapped up by Rodgers just days after the end of the season.

The Board MUST be strong here. Even if that means upsetting Tom himself.

We must NOT sell Tommy Smith to Reading under ANY circumstances!

i am spitting feathers just thinking about this, JIMMY RUSSO if you want the fans on board DO NOT DARE sell tommy to Reading ,you can have my season ticket back and i will personally give it to you if you do this ,had it for over 30 years YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND THE FANS THIS TIME this must not happen ,the fee above would be a farce and if you are giving away our prized asset for a pittance than why should we bother investing further with season tickets ,merchandise e.t.c they have just sold a striker to Wolves for 6.5 million who scored less than smithy last season yes age is a factor but not 5.8m difference ,AND a message to you Tommy please do not disrespect us fans of you by going there ,if you have to leave go to the premiership with Wolves JIMMY DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE STRENGTH OF FEELING AGAINST THIS PROPOSED MOVE !!!!!!

We've sold him once before and survived. We will sell him again and survive. We are a selling club. We have no money. We will finish mid table once again. The days of punching above our weight are well and truly over.

Fair comment Chris the Vic,Graham Taylor is a legend and always will be in my book, but the rest are unproven up to now and it's up to them to prove us wrong, lets see what happens in the next few days!

I would rather Smith went on a free at the end of his contract than go for 800K now. At least we will get another season, and possibly 15+ goals and a push for the higher areas of the league with him whereas we would be a lot worse off without him. You never know he may even want to stay if we do well.

Well I never, if Tommy is half the person I think he is he, should understand that moving on and joining the escariot will not go down with his home town club and fans that have taken him to heart. The Russos have clearly stated their objections at the shocking evaluation of a player who is worth 2mill+. Come on Tommy dont sell your self off on the cheap and tell your agent accordingly!

Am I the only on that wouldnt have a problem if TS was sold to Reading? What difference does it make where he goes and after all its BR we should have an issue with not the club he went to. The only issue I have is the selling price and it has to be decent otherwise I agree with Hexam Hornet and would rather we kept him

Sorry? Has this deal already gone through?

How about you wait until something actually happens before you start coating Tommy off?

everybody does know that Smith will be going but not at 800,000, if Reading want him try 2,800,000, as they will not be finding as good as Smith for little monies

I must be missing something, I thought he was under contract for another year...so if Russo`s have any balls they should tell the three fingered Cilla Black shagging **** from the auto trader to Kcuf ffo until June 2010 and tell his little **** stabbing leprechaun to go and play in the potato field

One word of caution we cannot afford for TS to do a Marlon and hold us to ransom for wages, starting place or anything like that (not that i'd expect him to behave in that way personally) but we need unity in the dressing room and we can't afford to have anyone pouring dissent in to any younger players ears, and bigging up the previous management and alternate clubs. Like I say I don't think TS is like that, but it is a worry with BR's connection with the players still so fresh in their minds.
