Watford may avoid Football League tribunal over Danny Graham's transfer from Carlisle United

Watford are still in negotiations with Carlisle United over a compensation fee for new striker Danny Graham.

Graham signed for the Hornets last week after running down his contract at Brunton Park and because the former Middlesbrough-man is under 24, Carlisle are due compensation.

At the weekend the North West club said the matter was going to be dealt with by a Football League tribunal after rejecting a £25,000 offer from Watford.

But yesterday, Hornets’ chief executive Julian Winter said: “Discussions are on-going between ourselves and Carlisle United to agree a suitable fee for Danny Graham.”

The £25,000 offered was seen as unacceptable by Carlisle, especially considering the club rejected a £250,000 bid from Huddersfield Town in January.

Speaking to the News and Star on Saturday, Blues’ chief executive David Allen said: "Watford have made an offer of £25,000, which has been declined.

“The matter will now be put in the hands of the Football League.”

If this guy is a 20 goal a season player then £25,000 is risible. If however he is only worth £25,000 then God help us for the upcoming season.

Carlisle had the opportunity to cash- in in January and it seems he wanted to go then, perhaps not to Huddersfield though. He then seemed unhappy as he stopped finding the back of the net.

I think £25K for a player now out of contract is fair enough, most leave on a "free". Ok he's under 24 and the rules say Carlisle should get compo but they had the opportunity to offer him a new contract.

Offer them £40K and everyone should be happy.

Let's hope our new no. 10 does the business next season. I think he'll have something to prove.

Danny Graham shouldn't cost too much so it won't be a massive loss (of money) if he doesn't fire. In our financial position we need to pick up some bargains and hope that 1 or 2 of them turn out to be quality (like the 2 Scots we have brought in). I'd be keen to know if MM will use the likes of Will Hoskins and Mat Sadler this season though. In my opinion both of these players are decent and should be given more of a chance.

Also Sheff u went on their pre-season tour yesterday. You'd have thought they'd have liked to have had these players with them.

When its quiet the negotiations always seem to be going pretty well and its just a matter of time. Let's face it - these transfers will go through. The Sheff Utd team is made up of 2 halves - those that have played together at Sheff Utd and those that have played together at Watford. Surprised they didn't go for that Reading traitor just to make the transition complete.

in sheffield star yesterday

with Lee Williamson and Kyel Reid already signed, sealed and delivered, Blackwell's attention is now focused on completing the transfers of Michael McIndoe, Tommy Smith and John-Joe O'Toole.

Fees have been agreed with their respective clubs and, barring any unforeseen hitches, all three could be unveiled before Friday's friendly with Floriana at Hibernians Stadium

The club does seem to have been a bit quiet on JJOT, what is the fee exactly? They were happy to say how much the offer was for TS so why not him?

As to Danny Graham it doesnt matter what offer the club rejected a few months ago surely? I reckon about 50K should do it

So is Jay off then? I just got an invite to the pre-season dinner thing at the club on 30th JULY and it contains 2 references to Malky "and the club captain". No mention of Jay De by name - could it be his performances for USA have stirred some interest?

More likely Malky has his own thoughts about club captain, and it might depend who is still here and who has gone

Smithy is probably on the phone to BR every evening and hearing that he is too big to go to Sheffield and if he stalls enough then we will have to accept Reading's pathetic offer for him. The club should put a gagging order on BR to stop him tapping up our players. On the other front if I was a Reading supporter, would I really be happy that the best Br could bring to the club "with all his Chelsea connections" are a few average players from a team that finished below them? They are going to be majorly disappointed this season me thinks. I'm backing BR out by christmas with Reading just above the bottom 3

I now know for a fact that TS has rejected the move to Sheff utd, so why again watford are we having to wait for statements, can you hold your bottle and not sell him cheap to reading, a penny less than what has been tabled by united will loose all faith in us fans.

As I have already said, if Tommy Smith wants to go, let him, but Reading must pay, the Trat..... Rogers should know he is not getting another Trat..... cheap
