My First Day

New Zealand scores another half-century as Letchworth held

West Herts were once again indebted to star opener Neal Parlane after they held Letchworth to a Home Counties Division Two East draw.

The Stags’ top and middle order came and went - the majority without really troubling the scorer - but the Kiwi’s class again shone through as he made an unbeaten 74 to help the home side to 162 for seven yesterday.

Previously, two early wickets from Will Jones had Letchworth in early trouble at 14 for two, but then Jonathan Hilliard (49) and Sebastian Franke-Matthecka (67) put on almost 100 for the next wicket.

However, Ian Gurney (three for 73) picked up both batsmen and, along with Jones (four for 52) and the rest of the Stags’ attack, restricted the visitors to 213 for eight.

Radlett also had to settle for a draw from their Division One encounter with Slough, although a fine bowling performance could have been rewarded with a win.

Leo Sandino-Taylor (72) and Kabir Toor (33) got the home side off to a strong start, but after a rare succession of middle order failures it took useful contributions from Mike Crocker (34) and Sheilen Patel (35 not out) to lift them up to 230 for nine.

In reply though, Slough were to find the spin of Toor too much to handle, as he accounted for six of the top seven batsmen to finish with superb figures of six for 47 off 23 overs.

Paul Barker’s spell was shorter, but no less effective, as he claimed two for nine off seven, but the visitors to Cobden Hill held on at 180 for eight.
