Mat Sadler joins League One Stockport County on loan

First published in Sport by

Watford defender Mat Sadler has joined League One Stockport County on loan until the end of the season.

Sadler has been on the bench on a few occasions this season but the left back has not played for Watford since Boxing Day in 2008.

The 24-year-old was signed by Aidy Boothroyd from Birmingham for £750,000 in January 2008 but has only made 35 appearances for the Hornets.

Rumour is his next Start in a Watford shirt will trigger a £250K payment to Birmingham. Doubt County are paying anywhere near his £7K week wages. All we need now is Hoskins, DeMerrit and Eustace off the wage bill at their current levels and we can start to move forward.

I heard Eustace gave up a load of contractually due bonuses and agreed to just accept basic in order to play. If that's the case good on him.

Demerit will go on a free transfer at the end of the season. I think I'm in the minority but I will be glad when he's gone.

He's overrated as a centre back, ok he does the showboat tackles well but his positional sense is awful and as a captain he's shocking.

Saddler not a bad player but pointless having him if we can't play him and it is the one position where we have reasonable cover. Any money we get from Stockport is a bonus if we can't afford to play him. Agree Hoskins should go if we are not prepared to play him - personally thought he had potential but has not taken his chances on the rare ocassions they have been presented to him and we can't afford to wait for him to flourish. Demerit will be gone at the end of the season and we can't really afford to let him go before then and in any case nobody is showing any interest in him. Eustace is playing really well at the moment and I think he has already foregone a contractual pay as you play part of his salary so as to enable Watford to afford to play him so I don't think we can moan at him. With his current form there is a case to make him captain to the end of the season as Demerit already seems to be thinking where his next club is going to be rather than helping Watford to the best of his ability.
The signing of Martin Taylor from Birmingham is a real boost and a class player and should bring some much needed steel to our defence. Well done for keeping that quiet - if it had been leaked before hand there is no way we would have got him on a free!

I agree with you. He is hoping to have a good World Cup and find a bigger club. I have often said how he is found to be awol in the middle of defence.

I would make Eustace captain with immediate effect, especially if it is true he has agreed to settle for his basic pay and not the extras - that shows loyalty!!

Also agree on your points.

Aren't Stockport still in administration so guessing we are paying his wages and this is only a short-term move?

Useless wrote off his appearence bonus he is still on a high basic c£7K.
-
Personally I think he is overated lots of effort but passing is very poor for a championship footballer and often gives teh ball away cheaply.
-
Currently he adds expierence to very young side put when he hasnt played (Middlesborough Away) he hasnt been missed.
-
Hoskins is a poor trainer lack of effort struts around the training pitch as if he has already made it. Also like to flash his cash off the field and by all accounts I hear me has big gambling debts!

We are probably paying Sadlers wages in full but if he is playing at Stockport it puts him in the shop window and reminds teams that he is still around.
I have said before that Rick Holden never posts whenever there is some positive news coming out of the club.
Come on scummer, speak up!

Sadler gets appearance money to get him up to 7k. His basic is lower. Its the same with Ellington. It was in his contract that if he was fit he must be in the squad and make at least a sub appearance which gave him his appearance bonus. He came on every time he was sub, no matter how late in the game.
Thank god we no longer have idiots in charge to sanction these deals.
