Watford lose 1-0 to ten-men of Barnsley as poor away form continues

Watford's awful away form was made even worse this afternoon with a 1-0 defeat to the ten-men of Barnsley.

The Hornets have only tasted victory away from home three times this season and have not picked up maximum points on the road since beating Middlesbrough 1-0 on October 17.

It was a scrappy game of few chances but it was Barnsley who took the lead through Emil Hallfredsson ten minutes after half time.

The visitors were boosted by the sending off of Ryan Shotton with 15 minutes to go and did have chances late on, notably Henri Lansbury's 95th minute free kick which was excellently saved, but the Hornets couldn't find the elusive equaliser.

Malky Mackay was forced into the one change from the side that beat Sheffield United in mid-week. Top-scorer Tom Cleverley failed to shake off a knee injury from that victory and his place on the left side of midfield was taken by Jon Harley. However, Henri Lansbury was fit to play after recovering from a stomach bug.

After a low-key opening it was the home side who had the first attempt in the sixth minute. Emil Hallfredsson cut inside off the left flank and found Felipe Teixeira on the right edge of the box but his shot deflected off Lloyd Doyley and looped through to Scott Loach.

Harley had the visitors’ first effort five minutes later, but his long-range effort was blocked.

On 13 minutes though, a long clearance from Luke Steele threatened to cause chaos in the Hornets’ box, Loach had no choice but to come to punch and in the process clattered into Martin Taylor and the ball broke for Hallfreddson, who was unable to find the target past the back-tracking Hornets keeper and the covering Doyley. After receiving treatment, Watford’s new centre-half was fine to continue.

Hallfredsson was causing problems and in the 18th minute Adrian Mariappa was booked after clearly pulling him back. Soon after, Barnsley’s first corner of the match ended with Teixeira striking a left-footed half-volley from the edge of the area wide of Loach’s left-hand post.

The home side were on top but Watford had a chance in the 21st minute when Lansbury drove forward and found the overlapping Doyley on the left, but his low centre was dragged wide of the target by Harley.

Anderson de Silva then had a shot deflected behind at the other end, but the Hornets had a decent spell mid-way through the half that, although it didn’t result in any attempts on goal, offered encouragement.

However, it took a fine challenge from Jay DeMerit to prevent Andy Gray from the getting on the end of a Hallfredsson cross in the 31st minute when the Tykes had broken at pace after John Eustace had carelessly given the ball away in the opposition half.

Barnsley though, were going off the boil after their early promise and in the 38th minute they were rather fortunate not to concede a penalty when Lansbury exchanged passes with Helguson before he went down under a tackle from behind by Carl Dickinson. The Arsenal loanee was convinced he should have got the decision but referee Fred Graham signalled that the left-back had won the ball.

Teixeira sent another attempt from distance wide at the other end and that was it for a goalless opening period that was rather tame and limited in goalmouth action.

The first effort of the second period fell to the dangerous Hallfredsson, however, his 30-yard, left-footed, effort was comfortably over the bar.

A minute later and the Hornets broke with numbers and once again Harley was slipped through one-on-one and once more, the former Chelsea man was marginally offside as his shot was saved by Steele.

Ross Jenkins was having a quiet game but in the 52nd minute he found space just inside the Barnsley area and his low cross was just cleared as Helguson attempted to bundle the ball home.

Nathan Doyle's 30-yard screamer, which rattled against the post, injected life into the game and the home side opened the scoring minutes later.

The ball was bouncing around 20 yards out from Watford's goal and Hallfredsson beat Mariappa to the ball, as the full back fully committed himself to the challenge, leaving the winger to bare down on goal and fire powerfully past Loach at his near post.

Lansbury arguably looked Watford's biggest threat going forward playing just behind the striker, but Mackay introduced Danny Graham shortly after the hour mark to go with two up top, with Lansbury dropping to his favoured position in the centre of midfield.

Barnsley full back Carl Dickinson almost created a chance for Jay Rodriguez when he beat his man and crossed from the left but Doyley made an excellent recovery tackle.

Watford were spending time in the Barnsley half without creating anything of note as all of their crosses were being cleared by the home side's dominant centre halves.

Taylor had a header from a Cowie corner saved but on the whole, the Hornets were struggling to break down the defence.

The visitors' hopes of securing at least a point were boosted when Shotton was sent off for a dangerous lunge at Doyley with just over 15 minutes to go.

Taylor had looked relatively assured at the heart of Watford's defence but he almost gifted Barnsley the game with seven minutes to go as he scuffed a back pass and Gray ran through one-on-one. But the angle was a little tight and Loach managed to parry the ball away.

Will Hoskins was brought on for Doyley with five minutes to go as Watford went three at the back and three up top in search of the equaliser.

And the Hornets thought they had found it with two minutes of normal time remaining when a free kick wasn't cleared and Graham looped a header over Steele and into the top corner. But the referee claimed there had been an infringement and awarded Barnsley the free kick.

As five minutes of added time was announced by the fourth official, Watford won a corner but Helguson was unable to keep his header down and it went comfortably over.

Steele's kicking had been nothing short of terrible all game but when Eustace sent in a teasing cross in the fifth minute of added time, the keeper claimed convincingly.

It seemed as though their time was up but Helguson won a free kick 30 yards out and Lansbury had found the top corner with a curling shot only to see Steele claw the ball away.

But the drama still hadn't finised as Eustace hooked a cross into the box from the byline and Mariappa's volley from eight yards out went agonisingly wide.

Tactically, we need to try something different away from home !!!!

Not going to many away games these days, so I don't see the problems first hand but we seem to play a similar team & formation that we do at home (4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2). From the stats we also seem have our fair share of possession (50% according to BBC today) and create a few chances so it's difficult to understand why we struggle so badly. The problem in defence has been addressed with the introduction of Taylor, so maybe it's more of a mental problem. Perhaps we need to be more positive from the outset as we are at the Vic rather than wait until we go behind? However, as I've said before, I think Malky and the team have done superbly this year and we need to be supportive and show patience. Give him time and he'll produce some away results, I'm sure. Roll on Tuesday night at the Vic!

Only the most blindly stupid Watford fan, like the Enlightened Scum, would have predicted a Watford win today. Barnsley are a tough side to beat and, to be fair, i would have taken a 1-0 defeat before the game.

We had a goal disallowed, we've stayed in 12th place...and we should at least get another point on Tuesday. Ok, they're the positives.

However Malky's inexperience away from home is continuing to be a problem, and this is where an experienced consultant aka Frank Lampard snr or Keith Burkinshaw is needed and needed quickly. We all know GT could do it, but he doesn't want to interfere.

We can't win every home game - and lets face it, we can write off Newcastle and West Brom straight away - so it follows that we must start taking something away from our travels if we are to avoid being sucked into a relegation battle. One win in ten is relegation form, although that hasn't been helped in playing most of our games away from home recently.

I think Malky must try and use the emergency loan window to get in another striker. Playing with one up front, away from home, simply isn't working. Graham is sub standard, Hoskins huffs and puffs, and H only scores at home. We need someone with pace who can play off the shoulder...that at least would give us another option and might take some of the pressure off the defence.

Rick, apart from the part about Malky's inexperience away from home, which is very much a stab in the dark comment, and complete twaddle tbh, your other stuff makes sense to a degree, a bit too negative still, but your becoming a bit more human (although still a long way off). The part about a quick forward, that is BUCKLEY! He said he loves to run in behind defences, so we already have signed what you are talking about.

I know you get a lot of stick on here Rick but i agree with everything you've said there, apart from taking a 1-0 defeat before the game, that would be pointless (no pun intended)!
Many people raved about our win aginst Sheff Utd on Tues but i did say after that the result that Sheff Utd were awful. Malky cannot be rated as a decent manager until our away form improves, and he stops this stupid one up front, didn't work earlier in the season, not working now, especially away from home. We are clearly a much poorer side without Cleverley and where was the creativity going to come from with today's midfield? Ross Jenkins, contributes nothing going forward, he must be dropped for McGinn.

There were two problems away from home.

1. Lots of Goals Conceded
2. Hardly any Goals Scored

with Taylor, hopefully point 1. has been addressed.

Malky needs to address point 2. Maybe HH is a home player, and we try Hoskins away !!?? Not sure of answer, but at Nil Points, gotta try something different !!!!!

p.Rick who hates loanees extolling the virtue of yes you've guessed it another loanee. Some of what you say occasionally makes sense but you are so inconsistent its laughable.By all accounts we deserved a point today.

This is ridiculous.......
Far, far too reliant on the loanees, quite simply if they don't score we don't!
Manager is totally inept, we get away with it at home but not on our travels, to have only one chance on target, which came after the 90 minute passed, tells you everything.....he doesn't know what he's doing!
I agree we need to have a proper and experience number 2 to help out, if that doesn't work and we see no improvements, we'll need to ship him out within the first 10 games of next season; and when that happens lets hope the incoming manager has some proper WFC players to work with instead of half a team of other clubs players, he's made a rod for his own back regarding that.
I have my suspicions that he's not up to it and we need to realise it before it's too late.
It was a horrible game, played at 90 mile an hour, no skill, no one able to put their foot on the ball.....
Ok we had (what I thought) a legitimate goal disallowed and a penalty claim that would have been given if we were the home side, but in the end we got what we deserved, absolutely nothing!
Keep up this style of play away from home MM and we'll have no away support.
Simply dreadful!!!!!!!!!!!!

Away support is definately dwindling, to embarassing proportions! 300 something to Bpool, 600 donc, 400 today. No one has brought so few away fans to the Vic. Ok, we've had a lot of away games in a short space of time but still, poor numbers and i imagine not particuarly vocal either!
Can expect fans to spend good money when they know they'll be lucky to see a couple of shots on target!

I know, just having a bit of fun. On that point though I still don't see why we don't start with Hoskins. I know 3 managers haven't fancied him etc but HL has said himself he is not comfortable behind the striker and Will has something different. Just please not Henderson.

Went to the game and I was shocked we only had 400 there. After a bright start it was a dull first half but the last five minutes of the second was highly entertaining if disappointing. Should've had a point, though we seemed shot shy all game. Barnsley closed us down all game and prevented us playing. LD was great and Harley looked good. Both teams looked liked mid table fare and would be surprised if either us or Barnsley went up or down this season on that form. Not sure a striker is the answer as it was probably the service that was lacking. Need to play more through the midfield as they cut out every cross from the wing.

Ah well...even when it sounds like we actually play half decent on the road its still a defeat due to sloppy defending.

Sounds like we could've had a penalty but maybe local radio/Malky are going to be a bit bias!

Just hope we win enough home games to be safe because it seems our away form isn't going to improve without some sort of luck/change in style?

In fairness Barnsley are no slouches at home but if the BBC stats are to be believed...We had 50% possession, with only two shots on target and two shots off target...is it a lack of good passes or an unwillingness to have a go? Either way we do not do ourselves justice

Word on the street in Barnsley is that is was boring game between 2 bad sides, Barnsley somehow managed to get the ball in the net though, barnsley live in the shadow of there big county rivals sheffield wednesday, so they are ecstatic over todays result.

When Barnsley visited the Vic this season I thought they were the worst team I had seen. They were woeful. But it was the first game their manager had had in charge. Now look at them, comfortablely above Watford in the table.Who says a change of manager doesn't influence a team!

11:40pm Sat 6 Feb 10

Barnsley did play well in parts and their forwards were very quick. We just couldn't break them down and eventually kept giving the ball away when we ran out of ideas. Should've got a point but we didn't. Not the greatest afternoon watching the Hornets, but I've had much worse so no need to panic.

Well reading the reports of people who went to the game it is clear that the midfield was the weakness. No surprise though. Where's the creativity going to come from with Eustace, Jenkins, and Harley?!! And does anyone else agree that apart from 1 or 2 home games Cowie has not performed this season in a creative capacity at all. Frustrating when you see how well fellow Scot Graham Dorrans is doing at WBA. Signed at a similar time and for similar fee to Cowie. Malky has got to keep changing things, McGinn or even the ever present bench warmer Bryan to be given a chance. The likes of Cowie cannot presmue he is always going to start.

Just what is the point of Ross Jenkins ,does nothing for me ,two holding players away from home 1 striker you get what you deserve ,MM reminds so much now of Ray Lewington who goes into games not to lose , ,if you play to win you might win ,you might though get a draw, play not to lose and you usually end up with nothing ,
Not going to bother going away anymore ,best part of £50 a game all in and so predictable negative tactics ,strikers warming the bench ,it is no good bringing them on when go behind or for last few minutes ,tactically MM really needs to wake up !

C'mon fellows, some of you are being unfair. We were without our best outfield player, Cleverley. Second best outfield player is probably Lansbury, third Helguson. Oh dear, all of them are merely on loan!!! Before I am reminded about Loach please note that I did say "outfield". If we survive this season, and I am not too sure of that, what will we do without Cleveley and Lansbury? Helguson, I suppose, may stay but it's the other two who are the playmakers. I am optimistic about Cowie, I believe that Jenkins might make it and I even think Graham will. Demerit will surely go and I cannot see the point of keeping Hoskins or Harley if they are not going to be played. (Personally, I like Harley but I am not the manager). MM has a lot of thinking to do. His signings of Severin and Travner were bad. If there is any money about I think he needs to take advantage of the emergency transfer period starting soon.

12:39pm Sun 7 Feb 10

We are sadly lacking someone who can consistantly get around the back of defenders and put a cross in that doesn't go straight to the keeper. Helgerson will get you goals if you give him decent crosses. MM has now bought two players who are caperble of doing this. Lets wait and see how they perform when fully fit.
Ps I still don't this AM is a good enough full back at this level.

Time to get real Mr Mackay. One up front wins NOTHING ! Sling out Jenkins and find us a forward. James Beatties's doing nothing, nor is Tommy Smith

Time for supporters to get real. Malky's hand was forced by the sale of Smith, Priskin & McAnuff, Williamson (x2), return of Rasiak, Cork etc, etc, raising more than £7m and saving the club in the summer. He didn't have the option of signing expensive replacements, so did the sensible thing by using his contacts and getting 3 quality players in on loan. The recent signings are obviously looking to the future and must be given a chance to find their feet. James Beattie is way out of our price range - even on loan, how much do you think he'd cost per week??

garston edl says...
10:33am Mon 8 Feb 10

Richard, i agree with you on Beattie, he'll be on at least 30k a week - not a great suggestion Stuperman!
Richard - not quite sure on why we have to get real though?! Ok, Malky was forced to sell players in the summer, so does that mean it doesn't matter how we play or what we achieve this season? No, we move on. I agree his 3 loan signings are to be commended and hopefully McGinn, Buckley and Taylor will prove to be good signings. That doesn't mean though that he is beyond critiscism for our shocking away form and his concerning habit of appearing to have favourites e.g Jenkins, Cowie, Doyley, when the first 2 in particular are not performing.

I wouldnt know, but Stoke obviously dont want him so maybe a deal is there? Smith doesnt even seem to be warming the bench at Pompey - surely there's a deal to be done there. Rasiak's out of favour and I've no idea where Priskin is. Any of that bunch must want to play football for the rest of the season and again, we will win naff-all playing one up front. It doesnt work! (and nor does Jenkins:-)

Richard - Come On You Golden Boys! says...

Smith has been out with a hamstring problem even though he wasn't getting in the team before, Priskin has gone on loan to QPR for remainder of season and Beattie will be too expensive for sure.

Agree that Jenkins has not been the same player this season but has only recently returned to the side after long absence. I also liked Rasiak but his wages were the problem and that will most definitely be the case with Beattie. We have to get used to the club operating within it's means.

3:53pm Mon 8 Feb 10

I read over the weekend that a £6m move from Stoke to Fulham for Beattie went belly up due to his £60k a week wage demands. I do not claim to have the inside on our wage structure but I think this may just exceed it!

Also, the fact that we had a perfectly good goal disallowed seems to have slipped the net as far as this discussion goes.

Grigg says...
5:12pm Mon 8 Feb 10

In the words of Arsene Wenger I was too far away to be able to comment on the disallowed goal, but we should have had a penalty in the first half. We were unlucky to lose. To be fair to Harley he played well. Taylor looked like a roack at the back (though we seemed to lack a little pace in defence when they were attacking) and LD did a couple of magnificant late tackles. We just failed to break them down in the midfield (too much head tennis). A faster forward and/or one who could go past people would be nice, but I doubt we can afford it. I'm sure teams have played worse than we did and got all three points.
