Watford set up FA Youth Cup tie with Chelsea after 1-0 win over Liverpool

Watford caused a shock in the FA Youth Cup by defeating 2006 and 2007 winners Liverpool 1-0 to set up a quarter final tie with Chelsea.

Liverpool have been in three of the last four FA Youth Cup finals but a Piero Mingoia penalty after 17 minutes was enough at Anfield.

Watford are currently scheduled to take on Chelsea at home this Saturday at 7pm, but it is unclear whether the match will be rescheduled, as has been the case in the past.

Watford: Bond; Yiadom, Fenwick, Oshodi (c), Angus (Thompson 90+2); Whichelow, Penny (Isaac 61), Brooks, Mingoia; Murray (Warburton 77), Massey. Subs not used: Irving, Otshudi.

Whoever thought up the Harefield Academy project is a genius.

Where are all the detractors, naysayers & doom merchants now?

I was hoping this match would be live on LFCTV, but it was only made available to Liverpool e-season ticket holders. However, LFCTV will be showing it at 11am and 8:30pm tomorrow, so I'll try and tape the 11am one.

There is as much chance of the Chelsea match being played on Saturday at 7pm as there is of the first-team match v Crystal Palace being played on 30th February. The FA website lists by default the four quarter-finals as taking place 7pm on Saturday, but the reality is that the matches are played on a date agreed by the two clubs. The FA website actually says that all quarter-finals have to be played by this Saturday, but it also said that all 5th round matches (such as tonight's match) must be played by 30th January. There will probably be an announcement in the next couple of days.

Why is that a shock result?
We have a superb youth setup, and should have high expectations for them. You are absolutely right SuperNova.

Outstanding result. For all the great work at Harefield, you're not comparing like with like when suggesting it's not a surprise.
They are Liverpool, we are Watford, ergo this result is a surprise.
But a very welcome one at that.
Let's hope we can get a few thousand down The Vic for the Chelsea quarter-final.
I'm sure they'll open the Rous Stand as they have in previous seasons.

Does anyone know which are the boys
most likely to progress? obviously Oshodi is known and when does the club announce who will be getting pro contracts?

Excellent result well done. I'm sure we would have done much better without haqving the academy though lol. :)

Went to this game last night. Good display from the youngsters and a deserved win against strong opposition.

A few players caught the eye: both fullbacks looked good, although the left back, I think it was Theo Angus was stretchered off in the dying minutes after being the victim of a very dodgy tackle after the whistle had already gone. Hope his injury is not as serious as it looked.

Penny and Murray both looked good and Brooks looked capable up front. Picked up a yellow for diving in the box though. Probably deserved it, but the ref wasn't great. Didn't do anything about the foul on Angus that saw him stretchered off and even told him to get up and stop time wasting...

Mingoia took a very good pen in front of a decent crowd in the Kop. Kept his head well. His delivery was also good throughout from the wing.

Bond also looked assured in goal. Dealt with lots of high balls into the box really well and was quite to come and claim most things in the box. Picked up a yellow for kicking the ball away after the linesman judged that he had carried the ball over the goal line for a corner.

Overall it was a good performance from all of the lads, but I can't put names to all of the faces so I've just mentioned those that stood out.

Decent cheer at the final whistle suggested there were quite a few Watford fans there too, which was good to see!
