Watford second-year scholar Adam Thompson made his full Northern Ireland debut against Scotland and it was also a night to remember for team-mate Marvin Sordell.

Thompson, who has only made one appearance for Watford, was a surprise call-up for Northern Ireland’s Carling Nations Cup game with Scotland last night but the 18-year-old played 24 minutes at centre back after coming on as a substitute.

The scholar, who has already signed a professional contract with Watford, joined fellow Hornet Lee Hodson in the Northern Ireland side.

Hodson, 19, came on at half time in the 3-0 defeat to Scotland with his side already two goals behind.

Last night also saw Sordell mark his first international call-up with a goal but his 11th-minute opener did not stop England Under-20s losing 2-1 to France. The 19-year-old striker played 62 minutes at Shrewsbury Town’s Greenhous Meadow Stadium.

Watford defender Rob Kiernan was also in action, playing the full 90 minutes in the Republic of Ireland Under-21s’ goalless draw with Cyprus.

Highly-rated first-year scholar Sean Murray also played 90 minutes on Tuesday night in the Republic of Ireland Under-19s 1-1 draw with Croatia. Connor Smith also came on for the final half an hour.

Watford goalkeeper Scott Loach was not named in the match-day squad for England Under-21s 1-0 defeat to Italy on Tuesday and scholar Tommie Hoban did not feature either for Republic of Ireland Under-17s against Italy.
