Hornets manager Malky Mackay has confirmed he is yet to discuss transfer plans and the playing budget with Watford’s potential new owners.

Stanmore businessman Laurence Bassini and his close friend Panos Thomas effectively gained control of the Hornets on Friday after the offer from their newly-created company Watford FC Limited became ‘wholly unconditional’.

On Friday it was announced Watford FC Limited now had control of 55.11 per cent of shares for the club’s parent company Watford Leisure Plc after major shareholders Lord Ashcroft, Graham Simpson and his wife Yianna formally accepted the offer of 1p per share.

Mackay had met Bassini and Thomas briefly during the negotiations, which have been taking place since the end of last year, but the Hornets boss has not yet had detailed discussions with the pair.

When asked if he has spoken to Bassini and Thomas about issues such as transfer plans for the summer or the playing budget, Mackay replied: “No, not yet.”

Speaking yesterday afternoon, Mackay said: “We had a game over the weekend so I am sure there will be something later on in the week or over the coming period where I will talk to the board of directors, at some point but not right now.”

The takeover of the Hornets seemed almost a formality once the Watford FC Limited Offer Document was released last Monday.

The following day the potential new owners went to the Hornets’ London Colney training ground to meet the players.

“They wanted to come up to say hello, that was it,” Mackay said.

“I wanted them to feel as if they are relaxed around the training ground and for the players to be able to put a face to the name.

“That was all it was really, he wanted to say hello and then let us get on with things.

“It is always good if the new owners take an interest in the lads and want to see them up close and personal. It was good.”
