Watford IFC fared better than their professional counterparts as they beat Coventry Supporters 2-1 in the IFA league on Saturday morning.

Watford IFC, the team of Hornets fans who travel the country playing against other club’s supporters’ sides, headed for the West Midlands earlier than most fans on Saturday as they took on Coventry prior to the afternoon game at the Ricoh Arena.

The Hornets fans’ side lost tricky midfielder Richard Murphy to injury within the first ten minutes, but fellow midfielder Joel Moody soon broke the deadlock, firing into the far corner following good work down the right flank.

A moment of slack Watford marking allowed Coventry to pull level within ten minutes, with appeals from Watford for a foul during the build up to the goal being waved away by the referee.

Watford were then given a good opportunity to retake the lead when Stu Nicholls’ quick turn in the box ended with him being brought down for a penalty, fiery defender Paul Whittenbury took his chance well driving past the keeper to put Watford back in the driving seat before half time.

Watford were kept on the back foot throughout the second half by the strong Coventry side, and it took some resolute defending from the back four, superbly marshalled by Martin Pollard and Frank Smith, aided by some fine goalkeeping by vocal goalkeeper Richard Walker, to prevent Coventry from taking any points despite their large share of possession.

The win was Watford’s sixth in seven games after an indifferent start to the IFA season and was the first time since the 2007-2008 season they have won four consecutive games.

This Saturday sees the team travel to West Ham for a league fixture. For further information on WIFC, click here.
