Aston Villa midfielder follows team-mate in moving to Watford

Watford have completed their second capture from Aston Villa in the space of as many days, signing Jonathan Hogg for what we understand is an initial £300,000 fee.

Following the return of Andreas Weimann to Vicarage Road on loan until January yesterday, the midfielder has moved from Villa Park on a three-year deal, although he has also signed loan forms to make him eligible for the Hornets’ clash against Birmingham City tomorrow.

The 22-year-old had two years to run on his existing Villa Park deal but has dropped down a division, telling Watford’s official website he’s “desperate to play first-team football”.

The Middlesbrough-born player has five Premier League appearances to his name but spent the second half of last season on loan at Portsmouth, where he made 19 starts.

Earlier in the week though not a football expert I commented that we needed an attacking midfielder and striker.
For those yelling at SD after a few matches which is laughable give the guy a chance .He has moved fairly swiftly to try to deal with the deficiencies and lets see what happens after the next few months. All is not doom and gloom.

Very happy with this a 6ft 2in striker quality player and a 5ft 7" tenacious Joey Barton type player (without the thug bit).

Substantial input of two players to the team. Look forward to seeing two great youngsters Weiman and Sordell.

We still want a quality striker though.

The jury is still out for me on Chris but we are 99% all agreed Troy Deeney cannot cut it in this league (not personal) Good league 1 or very good league 2 striker. Should be offered as cash and player deal to Rotheram or Milton Keynes.

Everybody knows we should have six points on the board. However, the chances we are creating is very good news. The ratio of goals to chances absolutely appalling yes we need another striker.

A new left back, midfield terrior with goals and two quality strikers + one to come and everything could change dramatically.

Seems to be a good signing from where i'm sitting, and also shows that Dyche can see the problems as well as everyone else, but i suppose our awful fans in the rookery will be quickly on his back if he hasn't scored a hat trick after 11 mins tommorow, it's no wonder Big Emu didn't look that bothered against WHam when virtually the whole stand were moaning at him.
Please PLEASE give this lad, Big Emu, Dyche, Bankrupt Baz and in fact the whole club a bit of a chance to get going before writing them all off, this is the 8th or 9th new face in the side, we've got a new manager and coaching team, new owner etc. etc. it's not gonna work overnight is it, pretty much the only thing that hasn't been replaced is the 2-3000 moany, quiet, miserable gits sitting in the rookery every week (yes there are some good fans as well, but it's hard work being heard over the tutting). If everyone gets behind the team and makes a bit of possitive noise then they might actually want to play for us, sarcasticly clapping and cheering substitutions and moaning at your own players doesn't help anyone. The clue is in the name, we're ALL SUPPORTERS, so get behind them or shut up.

rant over.

Not sure Hogg is needed at the present time as I understand he is more of a defensive midfielder & we already have a few. It also takes £300k out of the already tight budget to sign a permanant striker unless one is already lined up.Still 2 positive signings from Villa so onwards & upwards.

Have we got the Ashley Young sell-on money from Villa?
Two in from Villa makes me think that we're possibly getting these in and knocking them off cash owed. Hopefully getting better vaule as a result.

I would imagine Josh Walker might be leaving the club in the next few days. I wouldn't be suprised if the Prince was to go out on loan to gain fitness as well. After the Birmingham game we've got 3 days to bring in a permanent striker which is desperately needed. After watching Villa today I think Weimann might be neded back in January which will leave us short again and we're only an injury away to been light up front. Let's hope we can get that striker before the window shuts.

Very good signing, I was under the impression that we got him for free with a percent sell on fee?

Maybe Villa just gave us a little less of the Young sell on fee?

I have seen him play before, he was very highly rated before he hurt his knee, easily a 3 million pound player....

Actually it is less than one percent if you check the posts on here it is about 99% against Deeney. You appear to be the only one to contradict the statement!

Maybe you have some nugget of information that we have all missed.

He was signed as a striker.

He has made almost 40 appearances and scored two goals.

Maybe somebody can get his shots on target and shots off target plus assists.

Based on these stats it makes him bottom of the championship strikers stats, the midfielders stats and there are defenders with much better stats.

As I said it is not personal, but business is business, strikers are so named for a reason.

Strikers score goals ask DG or MS?

If you want to fly in a jumbo jet you want it flown by a qualified pilot and not a taxi driver.

Over to you for your stats! Unlike politics or local government or any employee on the government payroll. In business as on the football field you just can't hide!

Still need to sort the striking options out but feel this will not be done with a loan or two maybe from Man U next week. I see that both Baldock (West ham) and also Le Fondre (reading) have now moved on. Baldock probably out of our price range, however LeFondre was definately worth a punt at about 300K. Makes you realise how much someone like DG was worth, at least to us.

Let's hope today is a better performance that again The Hammers and get us out of that bottom 3.

Rogeruk - thinking about it your first statement may be right in that 99% of people on this site probably have written off Troy Deeney. However that says more about the negative folks that frequent this site than Deeney.

Moving on, yes Troy was signed as a striker, but how many of his 40 games has he played up front (and how many has he started)? Recently the Coventry and Bristol games were probably the first two consecutive games up front he has had? Given time he would do a good job, but circumstances have dictated that he probably won't get that time.

As to whether Watford fans of written him off, I hope not. What have I seen? A player who is prepared to graft, who wins more than his fair share in the air and who has a great touch. At Bristol the other night, he got most things on target with the keeper making a great save from his best effort, but he took too long on another occasion (the "sitter") which allowed the keeper to shut him down. (This would show as an on target effort though which shows how statistics can be misleading)

I'm sure even Troy would want to have scored more goals, but I'm surprised that he has got the stick he has. Bear in mind that some idiots have given him grief via Twitter - which I'm sure is really helping his confidence!!

I'm sure that he will be a good signing for Watford long term - if the losers don't get on his back.
