Watford are still trying to sign another wide man despite bringing in ten players during the transfer window.

The Hornets’ new head of football business Ross Wilson and manager Sean Dyche have recruited excellently during the summer and have strengthened across the park .

Striker Joe Garner was the latest to arrive on transfer deadline day on Wednesday [see below] but Dyche has confirmed he is still looking for at least one more signing when the loan window re-opens on Wednesday.

“It is about getting quality and the wide areas is one place where we need more quality,” Dyche said.

“We like the players we have got but you need the demand of other faces. We feel we have that demand in other positions now but quality will always be something we will look for.

“It adds to the demand of the group which is massively important because that internal competition is a huge thing in football, that will and desire to get the shirt is a powerful force and it helps them to perform.

“We are still looking and we nearly had another couple in yesterday who we thought would be appropriate but it didn’t quite happen. We will still be monitoring things over the coming months.”

One of the players Watford were keen to sign was Darlington’s giant striker Michael Smith but the 19-year-old has joined League One Charlton.

Dyche said: “Michael is a good young man, he came in for a few days on trial and we liked him but even for a very untried player - who don’t get me wrong has a very good chance in the game - I believe they played reasonable money for him.

“And for a club like ours it is difficult to take risks on people, especially when you are comparing it to what we already have in the building within our own development programme.”

The main talking point of Wednesday’s deadline day from a Watford perspective was the reports of Swansea City’s interest in Hornets centre back Adrian Mariappa..

There were reports in Wales that a bid had been made and the BBC were even reporting that Swansea had confirmed Mariappa was in talks with the club.

But we understand the Swans concentrated on other targets as they were put off by Watford’s asking price when they made initial contact with the club.

Dyche said: “Losing him wasn’t a concern because the reality of that was there wasn’t any proper contract. People always like linking players - the press like it and agents like it but until it becomes a reality, then we don’t have to worry.

“We have had speculation about several of our players and I have to say, I think it is fantastic for us that people are linking our players with big clubs and big moves because it shows the quality we have in the group.

“I believe in the players here and it is another signal that we are alive and kicking as a team, as a business and as a development programme for the younger players. It shows we are well thought of when our players are being linked with Premier League clubs.”
