The musical event of the autumn looks like being a whole load more fun.

The Oxford Mail’s showcase of local talent – Fireworks Night Goes Pop – sees three of the county’s best acts taking to the stage at the Jericho Tavern on November 5.

And excitement is building with news of a fun fancy dress theme, for those who dare.

The gig features sets by adrenaline-fuelled jazz, swing blues-masters The original Rabbit Foot Spasm Band, theatrical singer-songwriter and tall story-teller Matt Winkworth and The Winkworth Originals, and swooningly laid-back West Coast-country rock supergroup Dreaming Spires.

And because it’s on Bonfire Night, Coo promoter Autumn Neagle, is inviting gig-goers to ‘dress to confess’ along the lines of gunpowder, treason and plot.

Special prizes and cds go to the best Fireworks Night Goes Pop outfits or hair-dos. So think Guy Fawkes, penny for the Guy, 17th century conspirators, chinese dragons, rockets, Catherine wheels.. or anything else which will make the party go with a bang!

Early bird tickets are just £7 (£6.50 NUS), and more on the door. Go to wegottickets.com/event/137279 Like your music challenging and interesting? If so, the hallowed precincts of Modern Art Oxford beckon, on Saturday, with a show designed to knock your socks off.

The venue is hosting a set by the incredible Petrels.

Petrels is the solo alias of Bleeding Heart Narrative’s Oli Barrett and plays what has been described as ‘drone drenched heaven’ – with sparse vocals, bowed strings and electronica.

He supports alternative folk troubadour, and Devendra Banhart collaborator, Viking Mose – who is widely-regarded as the most uniquely talented American musician since Kurt Cobain.

Completing the line-up is the ever-innovative Rob St John. Tickets are £5 (£4). Doors 7pm.

Tomorrow sees the return of that smorgasbord of emerging talent, the NME Radar Tour.

Always a barometer of who is likely to break through over the next 12 months, the show, at the Oxford O2 Academy, features Wolf Gang, S.C.U.M, Niki and the Dove, and DZ Deathrays.

They follow in the footsteps of previous NME Radar acts Everything Everything, Hurts and Crystal Castles, and will all be huge! Tickets are £9 (nme.com/radartour).
