Watford are set to sign another striker as Sean Dyche looks to find an answer to their poor goal-scoring record this season.

The Hornets have failed to find the net in their last three matches and have scored just nine goals in 12 Championship games this season.

Marvin Sordell is the only Watford striker who has found the net during the 2011/12 campaign and the England Under-21 international has not bagged in his last five outings.

Sordell and Joe Garner have been the first-choice pairing since Andi Weimann’s return to Aston Villa but Chris Iwelumo and Troy Deeney [on the right of midfield] were also selected on Wednesday night, without success.

Dyche said: “There is a possibility something could happen soon but nothing is imminent. That [bringing in a striker] is definitely going to happen though.

“The calls are ongoing and it is not just strikers, we are looking at other areas of the pitch because I am well aware, and the players are well aware, that we have not won as many games as we would like.

“We have done enough to win games but we haven’t scored, it is as simple as that.”

He continued: “We need that extra pressure on the strikers – they know it already – but they need to know there is pressure there and if things are not going in the net then sometimes it is about having a fresh face and a fresh look.”

There is still a chance Weimann could come back to Watford in due course, after his loan was ended last month due to injury, but it seems unlikely at present as the Austria Under-21 international has been heavily involved since his return.

The Hornets are looking at other options though and Dyche said: “We are in regular contact with a number of different clubs so we know what is available and what is out there.

“The young players have to be ready to perform though. The good thing is there are people I trust at some big clubs, who I have built up a good relationship with over the years, to guide us.

“They are normally very honest when we ask if the player is ready for what we need or not.”

A number of the young players, most noticeably Matty Whichelow, were heavily involved in the first team squad last season but have found opportunities limited of late following more than ten signings in the summer.

But Dyche is adamant bringing in another striker will not have a negative impact on the players already at the club.

He said: “At the minute we certainly haven’t got too many players. We are currently at 18 to 20 players because all the youngsters are out on loan, where they need to be for them to develop.

“We certainly haven’t got too many that is for sure.”

Dyche believes transfer speculation and an England Under-21 call-up may have contributed to Sordell’s dip in form.

Sordell started the campaign well, despite his goal tally not reflecting the displays, and his form resulted in an England Under-21 call-up and interest from other clubs, in particular Southampton, who enquired about the former Fulham youngster shortly before the transfer window closed.

Dyche admitted Sordell’s form was concerning him and said: “Possibly it is expectation, there is a lot going on for a young man. He has played 50 or 60 games, there is the England Under-21s, there are agents and the media etcetera.

“It is not just Marvin though. We have a host of strikers who at the moment are not firing.”
