Malky Mackay has revealed he was not contractually allowed to issue a statement to the Watford fans when he left the club in the summer.

Mackay left Vicarage Road for Cardiff City in the summer and one of the issues which upset some supporters was the Scot’s failure to properly acknowledge the Watford supporters and their club.

A small minority booed Mackay on his return to Vicarage Road on Boxing Day and the former Hornets player was delighted he could now thank the Watford faithful.

“I think Don (Cowie) got worse than me which I am delighted about,” Mackay joked when asked about the reception at Vicarage Road.

“But seriously, this is a great football club and a place I had warm memories of and still do.

“The reception from most people was fantastic and I was delighted with it. There is always going be a little bit of discomfort when someone leaves on their own accord and is not sacked.

“I am hearing that people were upset that I didn’t make a statement but contractually I wasn’t able to make a statement at the time about how good these people are.

“It is good that this week has come and questions are asked because now I can talk about certain parts of it.

“I had my reason for leaving, that I won’t go into, but there are still good people at this football club.

“I am good friends with the manager and it was good to see some of the office staff and the fans as well because it was a big part of my life and I am delighted to come back and be involved in a good game of football.”
