Watford's head of football business has refused to comment on claims Newcastle United target Adrian Mariappa has turned down a new contract.

Mariappa, who has 18 months left on his current deal, was the subject of a bid from Newcastle at the beginning of the week, which was quickly rejected by the Hornets.

It has been reported this morning that Mariappa turned down an £800 pay rise from the club and whilst the Hornets won't comment on the matter, we understand the defender would treble his wages if he signed for Newcastle.

Watford's head of football business Ross Wilson told the Watford Observer: "Private matters such as players contracts will not be discussed in public by Watford Football Club."

Quite right that they dont discuss individuals contracts and negotiations.

AM is at the age where he deserves a shot at a higher level and higher wages too if an opportunity comes along, but it has to be at the right price. As long as the decent offer is made let him move on

Why does any championship football player "deserve" more than £800 per week? Hes been offered a 40k a year pay rise.

The games got too greedy.

Unfortunately loyalty doesn't extend to turning down a triple pay rise, best of luck AM at your new club.

Whilst he'll be really missed IF he goes, we can't blame the guy for being in interested in maximising his earnings (especially in such a fickle business) - he has a family to look after.
However the club must make sure they get the best possible return on the years invested in Aidy.

Adrian Mariappa turns down a new contract, he is lucky to be offered one so far ahead of the end of the current one. At the end of the day he is still a Watford player and if he acts like Mike Williamson he can always be placed in the reserves.
And why is this being reported anyway is a not story.
WO. What's going on?
WFC. We will not answer that.
WO. We will write something anyway.

Can't believe you are trying compare Aidy to Williamson. He has not acted like that in any way.

Whilst I hate these situations and would hope for loyalty from our players, i simply can't criticise a young man with a young family moving on when he can earn far more money, if that's what he chooses to do.

I have my own business and have always treated my staff very well and really look after them and I get loyalty and hard work from them in return, with that said though I wouldn't begrudge any of them leaving my company if they can double or treble their wages.

I only wish Aidy the very best in whatever he eventually does, i've met him at sponsors evenings and as with Lloyd Doyley he's always been Watford through and through, but all players have to move on at sometime and who amongst us wouldn't jump at the chance to earn far more money, even more so in the current financial climate.

What a load of nonsense. How can you compare the likes of Williamson to AM. He has been nothing but loyal, and a fantastic servant to the club. He has not done a thing wrong at all,not being greedy in the slightest he just has the opportunity to further his career. Rot in the reserves? Turn it in fella

Got any jobs going? The way you treat your staff is the direct opposite of the company i work for!

Of course he hasn't yet as it is only in the last few days that an actual bid has been submitted by another club. If the lad wants to play in the Premier and we won't sell him then a Williamson situation is bound to arise. If he will not sign a new contract we need to sell him now or his value will go down.

It's not 'bound to arise'. Not every player who can't get a move refuses to play. If nobody matches our valuation then I'm sure Aidy will continue to do his best until the Summer when he'll most probably get his move.

Well I can see why he would want to join Newcastle but I hope he doesn't ruin the good vibes he has with the fans by demanding a transfer etc.

Adrian if you do leave I for one will be gutted you are by far our most reliable player over the past few seasons but I can quite understand why you want to play in the premiership and get well paid for doing but if you do leave Please be gracious about it and not mislead the fans not like some people have done when leaving the club.
