Newcastle United have not made a second bid for Watford's Adrian Mariappa

The Hornets have not received a second bid for Adrian Mariappa despite reports to the contrary this afternoon, the Watford Observer understands.

Newcastle United had an initial bid turned down on Monday and there were reports this afternoon claiming a second bid had been rejected.

But sources have told the Watford Observer that the Hornets have not received a second bid for the centre half, who has made 244 appearances for the club since graduating from the academy.

There has been speculation surrounding Mariappa all week and this morning it was reported that the 25-year-old had turned down a new contract, which included an £800 pay rise.

The Hornets refused to comment on Mariappa's contract situation, with their head of football business Ross Wilson saying: "Private matters such as players contracts will not be discussed in public by Watford Football Club."

Come on Adrian - sign it! £ 800 extra and you'll be worth much more in the summer as a result. What's the point in not doing this?

He might as well stay anyway...go down and the club will have to sell in the summer and stay up will mean he has continued to help the team in a positive way and might get a move anyway.

No, its a week mate and I have to say in the current climate with all the austerity this awful gov is imposing on us, you have to ask yourself.. I wish I can have that sort of increase. I thought all pay increase was capped @ 1.5% anyway. Well, That's what Chancellor Ozzy stated as part of these austerity measures!
The rich keep getting richer and as for us?? Keep biting the bullet, there is worse to come. Note to Aidy Mapp, don't flog ya body to another Ashton.
Its grim up north!
