Watford boss would target Mariappa replacement if Newcastle United target leaves

Sean Dyche has indicated Watford would try to sign a direct replacement for Adrian Mariappa if the defender was sold but insists he doesn’t expect the player to leave before the window closes.

Newcastle United made an offer for Mariappa on Monday but it was immediately rejected by the Hornets, with manager Sean Dyche stating the sum was “miles away” from the club’s valuation.

There were reports a second bid had been submitted yesterday (Thursday) but we understand a follow-up offer had not been made when we went to press.

Dyche said: “Yes I am absolutely expecting him to be here at the end of the window. We always plan for players to be here unless it becomes obviously imminent that a deal is done. But we will have to see what the end of January brings.”

The Watford manager said he would attempt to sign a like-for-like replacement should Mariappa depart but stressed the club’s financial restrictions would make it hard.

Dyche said: “I think it is fair to say the reason why players like Aidy are talked about is because they are in the top end of the Championship market. They are recognised as players that can go beyond the Championship and Watford.

“They are our top players so we need to at least challenge for players who we feel are suitable to replace them.

“Yet again, that is where it is difficult because of the numbers but it is part of our club and it exists for the strength of the financial plan going forward. Without that it would be difficult for Watford to keep moving forward.

“They are the harsh realities and it can be harsh for me, I can assure you, with the Championship market because you know the numbers that are out there.

“But we have a very hard working squad, we need more cutting edge and that is where the market is hard because the real cutting edge players are demanding more.

“That is why our cutting edge players are talked about for such big figures.”

Dyche stressed that Watford’s lack of money means they must be patient in the transfer market and wait for the right opportunities – such as the signings of Michael Kightly and Nyron Nosworthy.

Marvin Sordell is another player who has been linked with other clubs this window but no offer had been made when we went to press.

Dyche did not rule out the possibility of both Sordell and Mariappa leaving in this window, when asked, but he stated it is “absolutely nowhere near that.” and the club were not in a position where they had to sell.

We need a wide player before deadline day, somebody with the pace which we are so obviously lacking at present. We picked up Buckley for £250k so they are out there. A worrying aspect appears to be that if i read between the lines of SD's quote it seems the Championship is getting too "expensive" for WFC as a business.

Of course it is too expensive for us - we have a smaller income than almost all other champ teams and no rich backer. Just means we have to spend less money than those we play, but that has always been the case, excluding the 2 occasions when we dreadfully wasted premier league parachute payments.

I can see Newcastle coming in with a slightly improved offer, Aidy will then hand in a transfer request and force through the deal. The biggest problem here is that the time the deal goes through we won’t have time to sign a replacement, unless there is a player swap as part of the deal, Williamson anyone?

Please Aidy if you do go then go to Swansea! More chance of first team football and I'd love to stick to fingers up at Newcastle.

Really testing times to be a fan of Watford. So galling to see two managers we gave a big break to doing so well in Wales when it could have been us. When there's no money there's no loyalty. The club really has to sort out the infrastructure and revenue streams pdq or we will drift into the lower leagues and probably stay there for decades as historically we did before the Taylor era.

Newcastle have made a new improved offer, but still short of what Watford wanted, however it has not been rejected yet! Guess they are seeing if it is possible to get what they need with the money but LB said he was not bothered if it didn't go through and was not going to use the money for players????

Could't agree more with you wimbledonhorn.Nobody should stand in the way of a player to improve his status within his proffession but what is done with any net gain is crucial to the future of this football club which i and many others love dearly. The problem is the track record of the current manager is woeful when coming to the transfer market.Sure we'll have a pot to pay a decent cpl of loan signings but that doe's not solve the problem of how poor this current crop of hornets can be.Give the youth a chance they're our future and our lifeblood and would give everything they've got for the cause given the chance.Complacency is in abundance in the squad at the moment because there's no threat of being dropped.Time for change and a good kick up the backside for some

Oh dear Sean. You will now look a total ar$e if, as seems likely, Mariappa does clear off before the end of the month.

Oh right. So he should have said 'I fully expect Aidy to leave'. At least then he wouldn't look a total ar$e to that internet Leviathan 'Alex Hillcroft'.
