Watford don't need Marvin Sordell to beat Millwall 2-0

Watford adapted to life without Marvin Sordell with relative ease as both of their strikers scored in a 2-0 win over Millwall.

Sordell looks almost certain to leave the Hornets this evening after a bid for the England Under-21 striker was accepted.

But Watford did not seem to miss their top scorer as Troy Deeney and Joe Garner scored in either half to ensure a valuable three points against fellow strugglers Millwall.

The Lions could have set up a tense finish but former Hornet Darius Henderson missed from the penalty spot in injury time.

The Hornets started the match without Sordell as he was pulled out of the contest at the request of Watford owner Laurence Bassini.

Adrian Mariappa did start though and he was joined in the line-up by new loan signing Alex Kacaniklic, from Fulham, and highly-rated youngster Sean Murray.

It was a lively start to the contest and Joe Garner had two glorious chances to score early on, as he headed straight at David Forde and then fired wide when put through.

Deeney chipped over and then Ryan Mason had an effort saved for MIllwall before the home side had a excellent chance to score themselves.

Former Watford striker Henderson looked set to head in from close range when Mason got in the striker’s way and the chance was squandered.

Apart from a Henderson header wide, neither team had another opportunity until Watford’s opener ten minutes before half time.

New loan signing Kacaniklic passed to Deeney on the edge of the area and his low drive from 18 yards nestled into the bottom corner.

Deeney had a couple of half chances after his goal but he was unable to add to his tally as the sides went into the break to a chorus of boos from the Millwall fans.

Millwall started the half much stronger and enjoyed plenty of pressure without really creating anything of note.

And they were made to pay when a defensive mistake allowed Lloyd Doyley to burst into the box. He unselfishly passed to Kacaniklic and his initial shot was fumbled by Forde, which allowed Garner to score with ease.

Watford were under pressure for much of the second half but on the whole dealt with the attacks well.

Henderson was the Lions’ main threat and the in-form striker could have scored when he headed on to the roof off the net despite being unmarked.

There was very little action of note and then in injury time, Loach brought John Marquis in the box as he came to collect.

Henderson stepped up but Loach saved low down to his left to ensure Watford a 2-0 victory.

To be fair I thought Garner did quite well when he started some of the earlier games and hopefully can take his chance of a long run in the side.

Loach saving a penalty eh?

Good job the window is closed..somebody might want him!

In someways Garner knowing he might get a run in the team will build his confidence and morale.

Afterall the poor chap usually had to come on at the end of a game or see Big get a chance ahead of him off the bench.

That would depress anyone.

We know Deeney will do his best and again just needs a good run of goals.

Trouble is we'll probably flog them in the summer if they turn into goal machines!

This win was a big well done to Sean and the team with all the off field stuff going on.
Now was it 3 or 4 million?

LD, well done for giving credit where it is due. We all know you don't rate Dyche but at least you can see when he does well.

Makes a mockery that people were calling for his head after 3 losses.

We were excellent tonight. Very professional and passed the ball nicely enough against a very dirty Millwall team. Eustace, Deeney and Marriappa were superb.

To be honest Loofer, I do see signs that Dyche is improving ( loach excepted, despite penalty save against a poor penalty taker on a won game)
I feel desperately sorry how he lost his best striker tonight knowing Bas will sell anything that shows talent.
I do understand we are a selling club, but surely timeframes must be observed and the manager given a snowballs chance to replace,
Still I suppose the rhetoric about completion of the red lion will soon be clapped out on the board!
A bitter sweet night or what?

great result, well done to SD and boys, hope Loach builds on this, we've been playing OK and were good against Tottenham... this result shows we have enough to be in Championship at end of the season (at least more than others at bottom end of table).... COYHs

Loach penalty save was good, but soft penalty by Henderson. However the penalty was given away because Loach was so indicisive coming off his line to collect the lose ball. Nolsworthy virtually sent him a telegram to come and collect it, and the 3 defenders around the ball would have just cleared it for a throw in if they had realised that Loach was going to set a new standard of ineptness. The crowd really behind Deeney and Garner. We looked worse when Iwelumo came on. A strange sub in my opinion that created rather than relieved pressure on the defence, Buabon would have been a better substitute.

It was bloody doyleys fault that he gave away the penalty, and any credit for the world class save he made earlier to that penalty. In general he played well and kept a clean sheet away from home, you can not ask for any more than that.Your just criticising for the sake of it and jumping on the bandwagon of what others think they see with tinted classes on.The whole team played well not just the 2 scorers!!!!
