Watford manager comments on Bolton Wanderers target Marvin Sordell and Adrian Mariappa

Picture: Action Images Picture: Action Images

Watford manager Sean Dyche has confirmed striker Marvin Sordell is on the verge of joining a Premier League club.

Sordell was pulled out of tonight’s match with Millwall by owner Laurence Bassini around two hours before kick-off after bids for the striker by Cardiff City and an unnamed Premier League side, believed to be Bolton Wanderers.

Speaking immediately after the 2-0 win, Dyche said: “All I know is that a Premiership club are on the verge of making that deal permanent.”

He added: “I had been on the phone all afternoon and I wasn’t thinking anyone was leaving.

“But decisions have to be made that are not my decisions so you work with what happens and you be flexible.

“I thought the focus of the team tonight was fantastic and they got on with it.”

It looked as though vice-captain Adrian Mariappa was more likely to leave than Sordell this week after several bids from Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic.

The Watford manager was asked about Mariappa’s current situation.

Dyche replied: “I will tell you one thing – exceptional. To see someone have a day like him, although it is not over yet, with friends and agents ringing him, to see his focus tonight shows what he is - an immaculate professional.”

When asked how close Mariappa came to leaving, Dyche replied: “That is not my decision, that is the business end of the market so I don’t know until I have spoken to the owner and the board tomorrow.”

“Dyche was speaking at around 10pm and he was clearly aware of the time when addressing the media.

“There is an hour, one minute and 20 seconds left of the transfer window but I don’t know and I’m not watching the clock at all,” Dyche joked.

“I am going to lock him in a cupboard and turn all the phones off.”

“Understandably, Dyche stated it was highly unlikely that Sordell’s replacement would be found during this transfer window and that the loan market was more likely.

He said: “I have not been in a position to spend so it has been a case of waiting for imput into the club before I can look at output and with it coming so late in the day, obviously certain targets would have moved and certain things have happened.

"But that is life at Watford, we just get on with it and we use the resources we can to build where we can.”

Well played Bassini, and Oh no! there won't be time to get anyone in, what a shame! If sky sports are correct and the fee is £3million then it's an absolute joke. Well played tonight guys. Before tonight I thought, give Bassini a chance, but now with the stadium developments 3 years away and us feeling the need to sell anyone who can kick a ball at cut prices I have had enough.

Probably just as well for Bassini that we won tonight!

Dyche doesn't sound too happy and rightly so.

Means he's lost a key player without the chance to get anyone in.

Good that Deeney and Garner scored but what if they get injured..

Surely Mariappia will be staying..afterall the last thing we need is defensive changes to a settle back line.

Know we have to sell to help the club meet its target in terms of reducing debts etc.....but the danger is agents of guys like Murray (he has one..) will probably think I can get him a "cheap" move.

I think Murray turned down a move to spurs or something didnt he, in the summer? if he did then hopefully this means his agent has his best interests at heart. we've got Murray for at least a year and if he is as good as we all hope he is then he'll be the next young star to leave and help us sort out our finances. after that maybe it will be Whichelow or Mingoia, Hodson or even Assamobolonga or whatever his name is?!

He did well v Spurs but then they all did I suppose!

I would say that Marvin can drift out of games and isn't the greatest hard graft worker like a Danny G so hope Bolton aren't expecting him to lead the line on his own.

Well played the lads and well played Laurence and Sean.

£3m for Sordell is excellent value based on his last few appearances and not giving way to Mariappa, who rejected Wigan and wanted to go for a lesser fee to Newcastle. I am sure Mike Williamson, Adrian and Pardew will be sick but the chairman has held out for the right price.

We need to get the right money and I think WFC have done that. As for those like garston who feel we should hold onto our best, i agree but our attendances are awful, our budgets the lowest in the division so we have to sell.

We will grow under LB and we will get there now for a couple more loan players starting with Tommy Smith.

I would argue a sale was essential, they've drawn out the best price on one of the assets and we'll loan in the rest of the season. Nice win tonight, well done Sean, carry on mate you're doing a grand job.

It will only need Garner/Deeney to start scoring and people will forget Sordell. Our fans seems to have incredibly selective memories. Both Garner and Deeney work harder than Sordell who at time was nothing short of lazy. Weird considering he played with DG last season who worked hard for all of his goals and made it very difficult for defenders

Quite right. Excellent business and Dyche's realism and positive spin on things is spot on for a club like ours. We do a superb job of making money out of the players we develop ourselves and purchase from lower leagues. Can you name another club who make £5 million per season profit on players? We struggle as it is, imagine where we would be without sales like these.

History repeats over and over again ! By far the biggest risk in importing players into the Premier league is strikers ! The list of failures is extensive - successes few.

This always reduces the value as clubs set of offset the risk by arranging deals based on success over time - appearances, goals etc. Maybe we will find out the full MS details in due course !

Oh and great shame that Smithy scored that superb goal against Wigan, may persuade Hughes to keep him even with all the signings.

Assuming the Marv deal has gone through 3-4 M is a good price for a player that has had 18 decent months at Championship level and let's face it although clearly has ability, often looks lazy. I would much rather hold on to Mapps than Marv until the summer. Tonight result showed that his contribution will not be missed and I am sure we will bring in a good loan or 2 to give us a few options up front.

For me this demonstrates good business and will help to continue to stabilise the club and push it in the right direction.

Bit of a strange day in the end. Although I am sorry to see Sordell leave, like many I agree that his overall attitude and work ethic leave much to be desired and although he is still young I would have thought he would have learned more while playing alongside Graham last season. I would hope that the club have buit a sufficient sell-on clause as we should for all of our home grown talent. It is very true that strikers are at a premium and in truth what still irks me is that I always felt Graham was sold too quickly and too cheaply. However that is in the past and we can only hope that our current crop with hopefully a further loanee or two will do enough up fron to see us safe. When the dawn comes we must remember we are and always will be a selling club, albeit with a better academy than many, so in that small way we are very fortunate. A big well done to Marriapa who obviously has shown great maturity and wisdom in realising that Wigan was not for him, the Prem is not the be all and in fairness he will likely be sold in the summer, and like Graham with fond memories and thanks from the WFC faithful. The summer will be a further challenge as we will fight to keep hold of Marriapa and also Hogg probably....but that is what WFC has always been about, no man bigger than the club and the constant question, who will our next star be?
Excellent result tonight it must be said.

I really think these positive posts reflect what a sad club we have become, content at our complete lack of ambition.
Applauding the way Dyche has had the rug pulled out beneath his feet, I actually feel sorry for him.
Sordell, lazy, not as good as Graham blah blah blah... Whatever he was our best player and TOP SCORER! FFS

Muttondown you do like using the word mediocrity don't you, how about another word you do not accept 'reality'. Sordell or Mariappa would both have been sold this window under the old regime, that's reality, Watford is bringing in players every opportunity, Bassini rejected a number of bids fo AM, the old board would probably have accepted them first time, going by DG very cheap price he was sold for. As it stands I think that at this stage MS fee was about right and at least we still have AM. Also a great opportunity for the forwards to claim a place as top scorer now. This window has shown we will not just accept any fee, but we also need to move players to keep the club running that is reality, not mediocrity mate! Also nice to see the support being given for Sean Dyche definate change from the start of the season hey!

Good Money for sordell plus im sure there will be add ons in apperances ..if they stay in Prem..full england call up etc...Sordell far too lazy and drifts out of hard games for me. Better to get a loan striker in see his worth before spending money out on him. More important that Mapps stayed and glad he did.

True but let's see now Garner has a chance to prove himself, Deeney is clearly a confidence player and with the new loan winger it looks like we have someone back in the team to supply the front players and Murray seems to be determined to cement a first team place, we kept hold of our defence choice, so all in I would say this is an exciting time for the club onward and upwards now!!

Lutondown your arrogance is unbelievable.

We do not applaud mediocrity but we do appreciate the efforts made to pull us out of the mire both on and off the pitch caused mainly through three people who had even more arrogance than you, namely Homer, Boy Blunder and Hoofroyd.

Unless you have millions to throw at WFC, do not expect others to do so. So far LB appears to be doing a good job as does Sean and if that means whilst we financially stabilise that we have to sell our best players so be it.

As fans what we need to do is get behind those who are prepared to put in money and attend matches supporting the boys, not expect us to match Chelski, Etihad etc and go bust doing it. We are not a big club and must work to budgets and financial constraints.

Whilst you may feel sorry for Sean, what you should realise is that Sean knew what he was getting into and with his hard work on the pitch and his pragmatic views we will be in a much better situation at the end of 5 years and hopefully Sean will be with us still.

As for sordell he knows from his Fulham days how life can kick you and now he has a chance to treble his salary...all the best to him and what a good deal it was for us in our present position.

So why not say "he is not for sale !"

Unless of course the player wanted to go but then again Sordell did say earlier last week that he was not looking to leave and was happy at Vicarage Road

Seems all a bit desperate to me.

I think it is disgraceful that our owner sells a player without discussing with board and Dyche. Why do we have a football team,is it just for Bassini to make money out of the club for his own ends ?. He knows nothing about football and should leave the business to those that do. Thank god we kept Mariappa, but it just seems that he had to make some money and as we kept one the other( sordell) had to go. He is a disgrace as an owner. No money for Dyche to buy players when we really need to win a few games, yet wants to sell the assets. I say again what is our club for, does he think we are a money machine for him to bleed, and how can we stay in the championship if we don't have the players to make a difference.? I think he is a nightmare and it does not look good for our future as a club with him around. We need an owner who wants to invest in the club, not take money out.
