Highly-rated Watford youngster Sean Murray on returning to the Watford fold

He may have only made three senior starts for Watford but 18-year-old midfielder Sean Murray certainly hasn’t looked out of place in the Hornets’ line-up.

A fearless performance against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup was followed by a confident display against Millwall in the Championship on Tuesday.

The youngster has played across the midfield for the academy side and can also be deployed behind the striker.

Against Spurs he started on the left while at Millwall he was utilised on the right hand side.

Speaking after the Spurs match, Murray said he is not sure what his best position is but, understandably, is just happy to play for the first team.

“I am not really too sure (where his best position is) to be honest but whenever and wherever I play I just want to get on the ball.

“When I do play on the left I come inside to get the ball. But I like playing in the middle of midfield because you see a lot of the ball and you can pass it on quickly, move yourself and get forward to have a shot on goal.

“But at the moment I don’t mind where I play, I just want to do a job for the team.”

He continued: “I hope I can push on, get myself a permanent space in the team and the squad. So hopefully that is what I can now do.”

Murray’s inclusion against Premier League side Tottenham raised some eyebrows as he has not featured at all this season but he adapted to the occasion with ease.

The second-year scholar only found out he would be playing the day of the Spurs game and was understandably excited at the prospect of going up against Harry Redknapp’s side.

“I found out in the morning that I was starting and I was just buzzing. It was a great opportunity to play Spurs in the cup so I was just looking forward to it.”

He added: “The manager told me to play my normal game so I just tried to get on the ball as much as possible and I thought I did that well.”

The youngster had arguably the best chance of the game for Watford in the 1-0 defeat.

Coming in off the left flank he hit a curling shot towards goal. Tottenham goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini was at full stretch and got the slightest of touches on the ball to deflect it onto the post and then Troy Deeney missed the follow-up.

“I was already running off celebrating,” said Murray.

“I thought it was in but he got his fingertips to it. Everyone on the bench was also celebrating but it didn’t go in.”

After the game Murray tweeted that his “whole body was hurting” and when asked how different first team football was to playing for the youth team, he answered: “It is physically a lot harder. The ball is always moving so you have got to be chasing and closing down.

“It has been good though because the lads have helped me out by telling me where I need to be.”

"whole body was hurting", welcome to big boys football Sean! Seriously though, he looks like he's got something about him, ok he might look out of his depth occasionally as he develops and he'll find it hard going to start with but let's hope he develops into the player a lot of people think he can be. Players like him are the future of the club both from a footballing point of view and, unfortunately, a financial standpoint as well. So let's remember he's 18, give him the support he'll need and the time to develop. COYH!

An exciting prospect and lets hope he can keep on developing. Obviously we may only have him for a couple of years before he gets sold on but that is the nature of WFC. However, he needs to be used wisely so that he doesnt suffer burn out. Maybe this was Dyche's plan at the beginning of the season, i.e to introduce Murray (or any other youngsters who were developing well) in January, whereby they only have 18-20 games left and are therefore unlikely to suffer burn out or loss of form, and a subsequent loss of confidence, which would be more likely if they had to play the whole season. Unfortunately his good form now means that many WFC fans will be calling for Dyches's head, asking what the hell he is playing at, if and when he decides Murray needs a little rest or decides he will be better used as an impact player off the bench for any given game. Personally I am more than happy to let Dyche make the decisions and lets just enjoy Murray's performances and not put too much pressure on him - he is only 18!

Had a great dubut against Spurs and a quieter game at Millwall. Supporters who actually turn up to game always give great support to the youngsters its moaners on the message boards that rip into them if they loose their way.

Good post mate, you do not see that many on this site. I for one think that Sean is doing a good job for the club.

Yeates is actually in 3rd place in the Championship 'Assist' League for 2011/12 so he is actually a decent signing. Healthy competition for places has been created with the acquisition of Kaca (cant spell the whole name) and the emergence of Murray, but i think calling for Yeates to be dropped when he is our leading assist creator is wrong. Cant wait to see McGinn back too and if he regains his best form and Eustace keeps on plugging away I am actually quite excited by our Midfield and dare i say it a bit of strength in depth in the middle of the park. Would have thought this would mean Jenkins on his way which is a shame as I like to see academy players succeed but I think he has had his chance.

Two great posts, Stoney; top contributions. I didn't realise that about Yeates. Sometimes I've felt he's looked a bit clumsy, but the stats don't lie, and he's got a good free kick on him.

Just a thought but seeing Murray trying to curl a shot on goal against Spurs and looking at our striker situation it may be worth trying him up front, seeing Deeney run out of steam and having Yeates available it might have been a perfect moment to try it out yesterday as I think he has more to him and this may just be a perfect time to see?
