Young Watford striker Britt Assombalonga has signed a contract extension with the Hornets and joined Braintree Town on loan.

The 19-year-old is set to spend a month at the Blue Square Bet Premier side after impressing in a two month stint with non-league Wealdstone.

Assombalonga admits he was a little surprised with the Hornets’ contract offer, which includes the option of a further year, but after scoring 11 goals for the Stones he said he was left with a positive outlook.

He told the club’s website:"I'm really happy. I wouldn't say I was expecting it, but when you're a forward and scoring goals it gives you a good feeling about your future.

"The coaches back at Watford have been really pleased with me. I've had positive comments from them, and I take all their feedback on board.

"They tell me to keep pushing on and do well so I try to do my best every time - which is what I'm going to try and do now at Braintree."

Despite leaving Wealdstone for Braintree, Assombalonga commented he was happy with what he achieved with the Stones and said he immediately felt welcome at the club.

“At first I thought it would be a case of not interacting with anyone really - but everyone at Wealdstone really made me feel at home."

"It's been a change for me. I've played on the left, the right and up front and it's been good for me.

"I know the manager (Gordon Bartlett) said me and Connor had been doing really well, but that's because him, the players and the fans have taken us in as their own and let us enjoy our football.

"The manager is really close to the players; he's very interactive and I think that suits the players at the club. He makes you feel like you're really important and that's great for young lads like us.

He continued: "Even though Watford is my team, it's been really good. I've played a lot of games and had great fun learning to push my own game on.

"Just as important, though, Wealdstone have done well. I wasn't there just for myself, I wanted to be part of a successful side."
