Zola looking forward to Lloyd Doyley's testimonial as Watford face Tottenham Hotspur

Doyley testimonial is 'vital' Doyley testimonial is 'vital'

Gianfranco Zola says Lloyd Doyley 's testimonial against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday is “vital” to Watford’s preparations this season.

The Hornets have only faced lower league opposition during their first four pre-season fixtures and the players have featured for 45 minutes to an hour.

But Zola confirmed: “I plan to play the players for longer. It is a game I am looking forward to because it will be a good test for the players.

“In the last two games they have been very positive and this game is vital because I need to see them in a more difficult game, and I will learn a lot.”

Doyley's testimonial starts with a 40-minute Legends match at 12.15pm between the clubs, with gates opening at 11.45am.

Former players will be meeting supporters from 1.15pm before the first team match begins at 3pm, with Spurs expected to play an almost full-strength team. List of Legends who should feature for both clubs is on our website.

Darren Anderton, Justin Edinburgh, Mark Falco, David Howells, Stuart Nethercott, Andy Sinton, Mark Stimson and Clive Wilson are among the Spurs players in the Legends game.

Alec Chamberlain, Wayne Andrews, James Chambers, Jordan Stewart, Andy Hessenthaler, Nigel Gibbs and Paolo Vernazza will be joining some of the players who feature more regularly for Watford Legends, such as Derek Payne, Craig Ramage, Allan Smart and Nicky Wright.

Tickets are still on sale, £15 for adults, £10 for Over-65 and £5 for Under-16s.

Watford drew with Boreham Wood and Wealdstone in their first two pre-season friendlies but beat Cork City last week and thumped Barnet 8-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Wednesday.

Fitz Hall, Steve Leo Beleck, Matej Vydra, Stephen McGinn, Britt Assombalonga and Connor Smith are doubts as they have fitness issues. Click here to read more.

The Hornets season officially starts next Saturday in the Capital One Cup against Wycombe Wanderers, but they have another game against Gillingham on Tuesday night before that, kick-off 7.30pm.

I'm sure GZ will realise that he needs a permanent quality striker with Beleck & Vydra struggling with fitness, if he hasn't already

It would be great to see Tommy Smith back but he is not the Tommy Smith of old, and nor is Heidar Helguson. They were both heroes but time marches on. We need a striker but neither of these two. We want a Danny Graham, who is still of today.

Think old Feff does have a point about Smiffy tho, LD. It's been, what, 2 seasons since he left us and a couple of years, when you're in your 30's is not summat to treat lightly. I hope he comes but I'm worried that he'll battle a bit. Wadjew fink?

But as an intelligent a player Smit (!). Is that helps compensate for lost pace. I would love a DG but who knows whose going to benefit from Zolas style? Garner?
I'm old enough to remember how poor the real Ross Jenkins was until GT got hold of him.
Glad Heidar wasn't considered I don't think he ever repaid the WFC fans for their devotion to him.
Looking forward to Spurs game, it's all damned exciting buddy!

Dont want Smith..time to move on from this old chestnut of old players coming back and setting the division on fire. He's past it now, forget sentiment we need to look forward with attacking options and going down this road does nothing but excite the traditionalists among us.

Younger, stronger, faster - there are plenty of other options that will be available to us from the Pozzo's and their contacts, I cant believe they will have sat down and said to each other "There's this bloke who used to play for Watford at QPR. He's not played much recently so lets get him back and get him to score 20 goals for us and get us in the Premier League" - its not their philosophy to go down this road and it wont happen, so forget Tommy Smith, he's had his time here and we are a different animal now, he will not be our saviour this season.

Have been told Smiffy still a decent player, just not up to the standard QPR are looking to bring in for in Premiership. Have always felt he was one of those players who are borderline premiership but quality Championshiip. Would like to see him back, but, then again, there are plenty of others out there. Will he be another one year contract if signed?

To Casterbridge - Tommy Smith was never a goal scorer in the Kevin Phillips class. Forget the past - you'll want Danny Webber back next! Look forward, in every way.

Not quite sure how a thread on LD testimonial has turned into a debate about TS and HH?!

Re Lloyd - you probably won't read this but in a time when many professional footballers are 1) Foul! 2) Greedy 3) Ignorant 4) Arrorgant, I am pleased to say you avoided being any of the above - old school footballer and a great ambassador for our club - many heart felt congratulations and well done.
