Watford head coach Gianfranco Zola 'delighted' with first hour against Tottenham Hotspur

Gianfranco Zola said he was delighted with Watford's performance in the first hour against Tottenham Hotspur and believes his side will become more clinical in the final third when their fitness improves.

The Hornets lost 1-0 to Spurs' first team yesterday afternoon, in a game which also marked Lloyd Doyley 's testimonial.

Watford kept possession well and were organised defensively but lacked a cutting edge from an attacking perspective.

Zola said: "I was pleased with the performance. The team, until near the end, had strength in their legs and caused Tottenham a lot of problems.

"As soon as our physical performance is better, we will be able to add the last step, which will be more shots on goal and more positivity going forwards.

"Up until the 60th minute, I was delighted with the performance from the team."

Watford's front three consisted of Sean Murray, Mark Yeates and Joe Garner and between them they had very few attempts at goal.

When asked whether the lack of cutting edge in the final third was one of the areas where the team need to improve, Zola replied: "Yes of course. We were well organised and the last third usually comes when the players' condition is better.

"So far we haven’t played a full 90 minutes, we have usually played 45, so the players need to play more to get better physically."
