Watford Ladies conjured up a surprise 1-0 win in their final pre-season clash against Women’s Super League side Liverpool.

An own goal by Liverpool’s Sam Chappell proved to be decisive as the Hornets emerged victorious.

Watford had the best of the early chances after a tentative opening spell. Jo Wilson sprung the offside trap and rounded the keeper, but her finish was cleared off the line.

Moments later, and the Hornets were in front. Sarah Wiltshire showed great pace with a marauding run down the line before putting in a telling cross that Chappell steered past her own keeper.

Watford girls looked to double their advantage before the interval, and nearly did so when Irene Martin Garcia struck a ferocious drive against the crossbar.

The visitors enjoyed greater possession on the second half, but could rarely break through the Watford rearguard. Their best effort come from a late free-kick that dipped just wide, but Watford were able to hold on.
