Former Watford owner Laurence Bassini interested in taking over Portsmouth

Former Watford owner Laurence Bassini is in talks with Portsmouth's administrator about the possibility of taking over at the financially-stricken club.

The Stanmore-based businessman held discussions with administrator Trevor Birch at the end of last week and was reportedly in the stands for Pompey’s 1-1 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday.

Bassini took control of the Hornets in 2011 for £440,000, using the newly-created company Watford FC Limited.

Before Bassini's takeover, the Watford Observer revealed he had changed his surname from Bazini after being declared bankrupt five years ago.

His brief reign ended in June this year when he sold the club to the Pozzo family, which owns Italian side Udinese and Spanish club Granada.

Former Portsmouth administrator Andrew Andronikou was part of Bassini's negotiation team during the sale to the Pozzos.

When asked about Bassini, current Pompey administrator Birch confirmed early discussions with a third party had been held.

He said: "We have recently received interest from another party and we are at an initial stage of talking to them to see if this could form the basis of a bid.

"However, it’s much too early to speculate on the likelihood of this leading to some sort of offer."

He confirmed further discussions with Balram Chainrai’s Portpin and the Pompey Supporters’ Trust, which wants to take over with a fans-backed community bid, had taken place over the last few days.

Colin Farmery, spokesman for the trust, said: "Mr Bassini has contacted us and they were cordial talks.

"In view of the timescale we have suggested to Mr Bassini that he pursues his bid in his own right and if he is successful in the bid then we would be more than happy to talk to him.

"However the trust is looking to take control of the club in its own right and that’s our key focus."

To all Pompey fans

You've had many years of pain due to mismanagement of your club. Whilst fans of other clubs may have little sympathy with your plight, your trauma's played out publicly are replicated at many clubs behind closed doors.

For just over a year this man caused havoc at our Club and you will not find any WFC supporter who is not relieved that he is gone.

All you need to hear from a prospective owner is that he is trustworthy. Well, if you dig out newspaper reports from Watford in June you will read about members of staff preventing him from accessing the safe, contradictory statements about him not selling to then selling two hours later and then the very sad story that despite wanting to 'donate' millions to redevelop our stadium as promised at the time of the takeover he was selling up because his daughter hates football. That in itself would appear to be a lie if he now wants to buy Portsmouth so what respect can be held for a man who publicly puts his daughter in the negotiation?

Some WFC fans will point to the fact that he did up a pub for our benefit. Strange how when he sold up he kept the pub as part of the deal. If you pop in there now you won't find more than a handful of drinkers on a match day despite Bassini's efforts last week of putting a sign outside that it was under new ownership (not true by the way!).

It looks bleak for you. Football fans have their differences but we should stand together against any person who may want to take control of our Clubs for their own personal gain.

One simple question to ask Bassini regarding his potential takeover at Pompey - WHY? He may answer that he is a supporter as he did with us. I thought Arsenal fans wanted Champions League, not Championship or League 1 football.

Good luck guys - hope the Trust bid gets the nod.

Expect the talks to be abandoned within a day following the administrators doing their due diligence or there might be a load of humble pie being forced down.

We are not interested in this nonsense! This article on Bassini is completely irrelevant, mere tittle tattle. Watford Observer take note.

Unless something directly or could be directly concerning our club's future we are not interested.

Nobody can rewrite history, but we can write the future.

It's time for Watford fc the Observer and the fans to move on to adopt a more mature position.

What I would like to know is why did GF Zola's team thrash Barnet and Gillingham with their fans enthralled by our performances, then we struggle against Wycombe. What did Zola do right? What did he do wrong?

Surely we want to keep doing the right things ie don't change whats going right and only concentrating on the weak links, to improve or eliminate.

Simples!

Do not like Pompey just because of SOME of their fans. Yet LB did not do everything bad. He was just not the right person for us but he could have done lots better. In my view, LB has been much made up as the bad guy but he did do a little bit of good. As I have said before, it was the guys before him that should be given the red cardand LB a yelow card. Now then, it is up to the football auhorties to decide if LB is a fit and proper person and not just the administrators deaing with bankruptcy. Tell me if I am wrong in your minds!!
Wrong, wrong, wrong as could possibly be.

Just what Portsmouth need another unreliable owner! Bassini is a dreamer and he nearly broke Watford! Don't do it Portsmouth!

Mr Hillcroft... to share your opinion all I ask for is proof...the sale went through and still no proof emerges. It may be a strange notion to you...but innocent till proven guilty.

But the truth is the casualty as ever with WFC.

Why did Homer go with no explanation.
Why did Ashcroft allow Rossis to take over (perhaps to protect Homer) and then he later sacked the Rossis.

He then sells to Bas after due diligence and GT stays and then eventually goes with not a word about Bas and cash shortages. Is this the behaviour of a man we can trust. Or was the club well run but the loan repayments to Ashcroft proved too much.On the other hand GT was too quick to speak out about Bas for non appearances at forums when he was ill.

All the time from the start there were rumours of Bas fronting Italian money...was it the Pozzos? who knows but until we do know I find it difficult to badmouth a man.

You and many others do not seem so hung up on this.

I do however suspect all the abovementioned have not behaved with the interests of WFC to the forefront of their mind.

Chris, we may not find out for a while what really happened and I agree in principle that someone is innocent until proven otherwise. You have a point that all of the names mentioned possibly didn't have WFC at the forefront of their minds. However, there would appear to be a number of (good) reasons why Mr Bassini is ridiculed/disliked/n
ot trusted by many.
Off the top of my head, he missed the fan's forum using illness as an excuse. GT was not aware of any illness (IIRC). I think he threatened to hold back a bond payment (I may have remembered incorrectly). He seemed to delay the SW corner development for no apparent reason (I remember work was due to start around October last year?). It seems the sale of the club was due to him wanting to see more of his daughter (amongst other things of course). The sale was on, then it was off then it was on again (it was like a soap opera). It seems that there was a transfer embargo placed on us due to unpaid bilIs. The staff were paid late in May (I think it was May) and then very late in June.
It seems that the contractor for the revamp of the Red Lion has not been paid (unproven at this stage I admit). Not to mention the episode with the safe and his "unconvincing" past. He has however provided a new pitch and improved the tannoy I think (although this is debatable!!).
All I am saying is that on the surface, there does appear to be much that was "not right", and as a result, it is inevitable people will judge accordingly. My opinion is that he is a chancer, and always looked at WFC as a short term project where he could make a few quid.
I do hope that the Watford Observer could summarize what he did actually achieve and what mistakes were made, if they indeed are allowed to. A fair and unbiased statement of the facts would certainly be of interest to me, at least.

Apparently he can't decide between Portsmouth or Luton to takeover. With his record I suggest Luton and refurbish a corner shop near the ground

...and don't forget the statement he made during the sale that The Pozzo's didn't have the money to proceed so he was pulling out. What a total w*anker than man was.
