Watford sign former Italy and Roma defender Marco Cassetti on loan from Udinese

Watford have announced the signing of Italian defender Marco Cassetti on a season-long loan from Udinese.

The Watford Observer exclusively revealed the 35-year-old would be joining the Hornets earlier this week after he was spotted at Vicarage Road for the last two home games.

Cassetti is a versatile player who usually plays on the right side either in midfield or defence.

Cassetti's career in Serie A began at Verona where he played alongside the likes of Mauro Camoranesi, Adrian Mutu and Alberto Gilardino.

Verona were relegated however and Cassetti joined newly-promoted Lecce in 2003 where he spent three years playing in midfield and won five caps for Italy under coach Marcello Lippi.

When Lecce were relegated in 2006 Cassetti joined Roma where he converted to right back.

The Italy international spent six seasons at Roma where he won the Coppa Italia twice and played in two Champions League quarter-finals.

Cassetti, who will wear number 27, left Roma in the summer this year.

A 35 year old Italian crock....Vialli is back. left Roma thru injury, picked up by Udinese and palmed off on WFC for a year long loan before he retires.

Discomfort levels are rising!!!

Not sure what elderly Italian crocks you think Vialli signed. If you are referring to Filippo Galli, he was one of the few positives in Vialli's team. He was fantastic, hope Cassetti will be as good.

Talk about writing a player off before he's even had a chance!!! If he's anything close be being as good as Galli, then he'll be fantastic. Reports say he's been with us a couple of weeks, I presume that was to check his fitness?

We've got a really large squad now, expect to see quite a few departures.

Would imagine he is being signed as cover. Can Play Right Mid / Right Back and last year operated at centre back. Hope this does signal the departure of either Hodson or Thompson but Tuesday night I thought Yates looked out of his depth in a midfield 3

I am fed up with Gianfranco and our new owners being constantly underminded by so called supporters, with there new signings they have made. I agree we have become become an overspill club for the likes of Udinese, but thats a huge bonus as all it cost is wages and not huge transfer fees.Trust me some of these new loan players are quality. Its a huge tribute to Watford FC that we have the likes of Marco Cassetti even considering coming to us. Lets get right behind all our players and give them the support they deserve no matter what results we get.

Why not? Doesn't cost us anything and we're under no obligation to play him if Zola thinks he's no good. Just some squad strengthening.

I hope that there are a few more signings to come, starting with the young centre half mentioned a few days ago. Another winger and striker would also be welcome additions.

Probably coming in to help the others in from overseas settle and take the pressure off Hodson and Doyley a bit.

Won't play all the games but this guy has performed at the top level in Italy so its not like we've brought somebody in for the sake of it.

GloryHornetBoy says...
3:50pm Thu 23 Aug 12

Maybe Zola thinks Thompson and Hodson aren't ballers i.e. players who can be consistent and composed on the ball and pass it accurately over a period of time - why else would they get him apart from experience? This system needs players who can pass and retain posession in tight situations, maybe he doesn't see that in the two youngsters. As we know now fullbacks are now the most important positions on the field in the modern formation.

McHornet says...

A decent experienced addition! Just need to get a centre forward to hold the ball up, hopefully Geijo and we'll have a decent team!

I just hope as the season goes on, Yeates is used less and less... i, like many, don't think he does anywhere near enough!

Surely we're fully stocked up top now?

Geijo, Vydra, Iwelumo, Garner, Leo Beleck, Deeney shortly, Murray, Anya - that's eight into three spots ....Plus we have some youngsters for emergencies and cover for wider positions if required in Yeates and Forsythe.

I can't see how we'd get another striker in now. Plenty of options there.

We've signed Vydra who looks easily good enough for this division, Geijo who is 6ft and will surely be the 20-goal centre forward when fit. If we sign yet another forward we'll need to shred a few I would say. As it is three should go. If we're playing 4-3-3 (ish) then there just isn't room for all of them.

I can see us picking up a good strong centre mid but even there we are blessed with plenty - Eustace, Yeates, Murray, Abdi, Hogg, Buaben, McGinn, Jenkins etc etc.

Where do we think we will strengthen if anywhere? I'm slightly concerned about having a big squad of not quite players rather than a small one of nuggets but more than happy we have enough in all positions now. With a week to go, it would be nice to see 3/4 go and one peach come in in their place.

Gianfranco is clearly giving all a fair chance to show there best. But its a certainty that there will be a few leaving . If Troy Deeney gets fit and the club feel fit to retain him i believe he can push for a front man position. Exciting times ahead.

If having brought in 8 players we still have to play Deaney I will be bitterly dissapointed. He was the best we had last year and it was great that we got behind him but you will not be challenging for a top half position if he is still the best we have available.

A good point on Filipo Galli. he was slowing up at time we brought him. There was no chance of him coming to us when he was 35 as he was in his prime. Even at 40 he shone at the heart of our humble defence for that side that Vialli assembled was very poor. Some awful signings as i remember, he squandered money and left us well in financial bother.
That was then our new regime is a far differant proposion. Great set up.

We need a solid, quick centre back who is good on the ball. Taylor and nosworthy are too similar and simply not good enough for zola's style. Also, an attacking centre midfielder wouldn't go a miss.

I don't agree about Taylor or Nos. I think they have both shown plenty of ability on the ball. My doubts would be with Fitz Hall. But hey, he has yet to kick a ball for Watford so we'll wait and see

allow me to settle this gentlemen, hodson was a donkey is a donkey and always will be a donkey,he cannot win a header and allows the winger to deliver a cross almost everytime.he is often caught out of position and he himself cannot deliver a pinpoint cross but just hoofs the ball in the general direction of the box.as for doyley well bless him we all love him but.so anyway i do hope cassetti can play right back.
Dr Muppett, you were another one that went quite when Hodson came in last season and did really well at a difficult time in the season, and like all the other **** roaches on this forum that slate some of our young players youve just made a complete fool of your self on this forum and showed the true supporters the type of scum bag you are.
Haha!! Just for a silly moment i thought you said 'Hodson did really well'!!!! Haha .......nice one!!!
Well Tiger no sorry ****, you cant of gone to many games last season but people like Dr Half wit, the luton muppett ETC are failures in life that sit on there key boards all day sniping at young players giving there all for Watford. Sure now weve got money some of these players will be brushed aside.
In 2 years time none of the current crop of players will be at the club, we might be in the prem but we will have a team of Italian players, inflated gate prices no academy and no Watford family club and take it from an ex Chelsea fan its not all its cracked up to be.
That sums you up completely an ex Chelsea fan masquerading as a Watford fan.
True fans support one club, and I remember going to Chelsea when they could muster barely 14k a game, looks pretty full now. So I'd say success is all its cracked up to be.
Now wind your tongue in sonny, and fly some where warm, it might cheer you up a tad

Lol, I might surprise you to what I can afford. I'd never want a season ticket at Chelsea, being a Watford fan all my life, turncoat.
And if I go to Luton it will be in my spanking Jag XF. Sorry to shatter you delusions ex Blues fan

And a comfy Jag it is to i may add!! Now i cant pass opinion on Hodson as i wasnt able to get to many games last year due to Work and Health issues. However 'Sick as a parrot' i can pass judgement on your bad mouthing of LD. You have no idea about what he can and cant afford so dont make wild assumptions as its not wise. You are very wrong in calling him a 'faliure boy' as he is a man and a stand up one at that. A more pasionate and informed Watford fan you could not wish to meet. Your petty and rather un called for rudeness lost all crediability when you came out with 'ex-chelsea' fan. This is a Watford fan only zone. Now from what i can see you have been aggressive from the start against LD who has only offered an opinion and a good humoured repl, so your attitude is un called for and it probably best if you move on. Now im up at 5am for a nice walk to work to fill my lung and a half up with fresh air so i will speak to you tomo LD

what have you got against Hodson and Thompson? I'm hoping you meant doesn't. Anyway good to have Cassetti on board
Can't see it with Hodson Bush, too small for me, I hasten to add, I hope I'm wrong.
What a load of rubbish, Leighton Baines, Ashley Cole both 5ft 5 you dont need great height to be a full back.
But he ain't either of them, and will never be. In my opinion of course. I really don't give two hoots about yours birdy
Yea 2 hoots just about sums you up pal, you went a bit quiet last season when Hodson came into the side and proved you wrong again. Different season same player bashing fans on this forum, well done Scott Loach on Tue by the way.

And to think I've been banned for saying a lot less! But as a defender of free speech, I say bring it on.
