Udinese's Jean-Alain Fanchone to become Watford's 11th summer signing

The Hornets are set to sign Udinese left back Jean-Alain Fanchone, the Watford Observer understands.

Fanchone has already joined up with Watford's squad ahead of his pending move, although it is currently unclear whether it will be on loan or a permanent transfer.

The 23-year-old is a left back who started his career with Strasbourg and joined Udinese in January on a four-and-a-half-year deal after spending time with the club on trial.

Fanchone will become the club's 11th summer signing and sixth from Italian club Udinese, who are also owed by the Pozzo family.

well, the Pozzos are definitely backing us, and although we'd all prefer permanent signings, there's no denying that the size (and more importantly, quality) of the squad is vastly increased from last year.

Given the Brum performance, plus the 3 or 4 other signings looking like happening this week, I am starting to think that this could be our year for the play-offs.

as long as Udinese don't want all their players back once they have proven themselves.

Can anyone remember such an exciting time? Not just because of the players we now have, but the financial security given to the club.

I can't remember a time in the recent past when I've been so fired-up. I'm sad though that there are still a few dinosaurs that hanker for the dreary, unsafe and unsure past. Roll on the future and all it possibly holds for us.

we still need to confirm the Brazilian and the Argentinian and this will make 13 players! I've never known such an exciting time at WTC. I firmly believe we are in safe hands with the Pozzos. If it fails with the Pozzos then nothing will turn our beloved club around. For once other teams and fans are looking at our club and thinking "I wish what is happening at Watford would happen to us". Great times ahead

As often stated Gianfranco will need fair time to achieve the soccer side he wants for us to watch.Having checked out most of our loaned players i firmly believe that most will be more than good enough. The nice thing as so called established players are upping the anti now a real bonus. We have some tough away games in the next few weeks. If we get points at either Derby or Bolton that would be a major bonus. A tall order with all the transition occuring within the side, but lets keep patient, and give our Leader the time to acclimatise the new players to the frantic style of the championship.

I regret that I am in USA and rarely get to a game. I'm just curious though, do any of you worry that you'll be cheering on a bunch of foreign strangers? I know it's fifty years since teams were made up of local folks, but it looks from a distance that we have a team of junior all stars who won't be around in 12 months. It's more like a travelling exhibition team than a club. Still, the quality will be exciting, I guess. Just asking....It beats a relegation struggle!

Personally I have no issue.

I expect those that are key team players will be here again next year, one or two stars might be moved or sold (vydra?) but they will be topped up with a couple of further signings/loans. I don't think it will be all change every year and don't believe it has been at Granada.

Lets face it, in the past if we signed a player on a 3 year contract, at the end of year 2 we would probably sell if he was successful and wouldn't sign a new contract anyway. If he was a flop (sadler, Ellington) we'd be unable to shift but left with the cost. I prefer the Pozzo model !

Pennant, Foster, Lansbury, Cleverley, Kightly, Nosworthy. It's not as though we haven't used loan players in the past. I'd rather we sign quality loanees than average permanent transfers and be saddled with poor players and an inflated wage bill.

I find the superficial attitude of people on here amazing. We are fielding a team of overseas loanees, players who have no affinity to the club who can all be recalled at a moment's notice. A once famous youth system discarded in an instant.

People acclaim this as the most exciting time they can remember. Really? I'm not that old, but I can remember us signing players I'd heard of, or even seen in action. You Tube clip packages may be the modern age, but for one or 2 players, not 11. And, while it doesn't mean they are not good players, most of ours have not got those.

I'm not saying it's not a good business model, or these are not good players, but is this why we started watching football? Will we ever see anyone stay long enough to be a Coton, a Mooney, a Hessenthaler, even a Doyley? Are we ever going to own a player again?

Kids don't fall in love with the game, desperate not to miss a match, to see faceless loanee A we've just signed link up with faceless loanee B we've got to the end of the season.

Someone described John Eustace as a 'spare' above. He has been a good player for us for a few years now, and can hold his own in the Championship - why does his face no longer fit? Has Zola, (or his bosses - who is making all these transfer decisions?), even seen him play?

When people finally wake up, they'll find their club is no longer there.

That's the thing - despite the blinkered reverie of people on here, in the wider world we are being viewed with a mixture of scorn and suspicion.
Udinese are effectively using a loophole to field a Reserve XI in the Championship.

Somebody suggested making our Away kit in Udinese colours. I've got news for you - it's not far away, and it won't just be the away kit. Once you begin handing away your identity, blinded by a glut of signings, (however innocuous), and a famous manager, (though why Zola is being revered as a great manager with his track record is beyond me), nothing is sacred.

Change is never easy to accept especially on this scale, at present it is to early to say how it will turn out. I was worried about whether or not these loanees being the majority of our future squad will wear the shirt and badge in pride and give it their all, so far I have been impressed with the clear joint thinking on the pitch and clearly seems there is still a dressing room common cause ethos to go out and do a job, again still early day's but hopefully what we saw on Saturday is a blueprint to our future, the futures bright the futures YELLOW!

I am an Italian who has always had a place in my heart for Watford
my dad took me and I take my children. This aside I would like to state the following.
For all that believe this period at Watford is bad thing or bad that we are loaning
players regardless of quality or even the fact we have downgraded our youth facility
I would like to bring the following to your attention.
Watford in the premiere league is more lucrative than Udinese and Granadas joint participation
in their leagues. Watford are not being used as a dumping ground or a shop window.
When we achieve promotion you will see successful loanees make a Permanente switch.
How nice is it to be able to believe that this year we could push for promotion rather than
previous seasons objectives (avoid relegation) and (try for a cup run).
Watford were set for a transfer ban 10 point deduction and administration before the Pozzo era.
Where has the £110 million we got for promotion and players sales gone??
What ever is happening at Watford its bringing excitement and allowing us to dream again we can be
successful and we will not be letting good players go when were in the prem only bringing them in.

Is there a lesson to be learned?

It would be great to see home grown players in the team but the reality is the team innevitably has been full of players who started off at another club so is there much difference between that and players coming in on loan? Especially if those loans, if Grenada are anything to go by, could be for renewed season after season?

Yeee Haaaa Cowboy!! I will be Tonto to your Lone Ranger!! To address a few points. Eustace is injured which is why he is not playing! Muganji Bia the young Belguin kid we have signed on a 4 year contract. He oozes class and is already a full international playing with VermahlenHazard and Kompany! Id rather this type of player join who we can develop into a club player than someone who is just not good enough! Regarding your comment about faceless loanees, the number of kids i saw last night with Vydra and 20 on there shirt means that they are jus as excited!! If you look at Granada they have had players on loan from Udinese for a few years. It is in the best interest of the Pozzo family to get us into the premiership, therefore if we dont this season and they see Pudil, Vydra and Abdi makin a massive difference they willl stay! I think if we had more money we would of signed more of these permanantly. However as we have very little money whats the point of having an even worse balancesheet when we can have them on loan. When we get to the prem and get a financial boost thats when we can turn them into permanant transfers!

Our back four would be , Fanchone, Taylor, Neuton & Cassetti,.......
Angela, Nosworthy, Hall all cover ?

Bit tired of hearing some of you bleating on about WFC's Harefield Academy conveyor belt....well there was Assombalonga and Murray and......err....what an outstanding list that is!! We've had 100 years of varying degrees of drudgery at WFC give or take a few golden moments....so lets enjoy our moment and hope this time it lasts!!

Pudil would be moved to the left side of midfield. in my humble opinion, look this whole thread is only speculation, no one knows really what will happen except GZ, but its fun to guess.

I remember such financial secure times not so long ago. After the first time we got in the Prem (just before Vialli became manager that is) and last time we got in the Prem (and just before all the money disapeared). Is there a lesson to be learned? It would be great to see home grown players in the team but the reality is the team innevitably has been full of players who started off at another club so is there much difference between that and players coming in on loan? Especially if those loans, if Grenada are anything to go by, could be for renewed season after season?
I really don't want to get in any discussion with you, but why are you omparing these regime to Viallis? Simply because they are both Italian? That to me smacks of typifying the whole Italian race as spendthrift irresponsible folk with no business sense. Probably be better to compare the idiot wannabe that just left the club minus the safe keys to previous regimes, who happened to be English with an appointed Italian coach. Enough said Grrr
My comment was NOTHING to do with anyones nationality, get a grip.

I was pointing out that we've had periods in the recent past where the club had been VERY financially secure and it went belly up and that just because the Pozzo's are backing the club it doesn’t necessarily guarantee success or financial stability. Although this time I believe the owners will stick it out and have the funds to do it as oppossed to say Lord A who despite being just as minted didn’t want to spend a penny at the club.

Clear enough now? Just in case you take it the wrong way, this isnt a critism just pointing out that in football financial security can change quickly.

Without the excuse making manager..

I used to like Wenger until he started blaming anyone but himself for the ills at Arsenal.

Can see why people might feel dis-connected with the players coming in but then that was said last season when we were buying loads of British journeymen footballers.

Even Nosworthy was rubbished before he joined and most would drive the likes of Garner/Dickinson out of the club tonight if they could.

Naturally like anything in football its all about results.

Every football fan has a fickle nature.
