Watford defender Martin Taylor joins Sheffield Wednesday after asking for move
11:14pm Friday 31st August 2012 in Sport
By Frank Smith, Deputy Group Sports Editor
Picture: Action Images
Watford defender Martin Taylor has joined Sheffield Wednesday after the player asked to leave the club, according to the Hornets.
Sheffield Wednesday have been interested in the defender for some time and, despite Taylor playing in all of Watford’s game this season and captaining the side in recent matches, the two clubs have this evening agreed a deal for an undisclosed fee.
Taylor has been one of the Championship’s most consistent defenders since his arrival on a free transfer in January 2010.
The 32-year-old is hugely popular in the dressing room and signed a new one-year contract with the club three months ago.
Watford have since gone through huge change following the Pozzos’ takeover this summer, with the new management team making 16 new signings – five of whom can play in defence.
Taylor made 95 appearances for Watford, scoring ten goals.

Upset that this is the casualty of all the loan signings, was hoping to get rid of some of the deadwood like Forsyth, Jenkins and perhaps Dickinson. But I understand SW offered him a longer contract so I guess it offers him more security.
Good Luck to him, I think he may miss out on something special here.

Disappointing but as Zola wants to get rid of players anyone wanting to leave is always likely to do as such.

I'd be surprised if Tayor walked in within the last 2 days and asked to leave.
Maybe there has been an on going issue.

Your comments are ridiculous.... going on about respect? Do you really think Martin Taylor will be having sour grapes with WFC, The Pozzos or GZ?? Don't be so ridiculous, he is a professional footballer, realising a longer contract is on offer and accepting maybe his first team status is under threat. So he looks after number 1 and signs a better contract. Feel free to stay away but I'm sure you'll come crawling back when we are in the premier league having played some of the best football you will ave seen at The Vic.

No money, no players, no future, minus 10 points. I see your point. That sounds much better than a load of technically gifted players who are here to help us get promoted. Lack of respect? He had a deal which he signed and somebody was going to offer him a better one so he asks to leave. Sounds like we respected his wishes and would he be good enough if we go up? Probably not.

Ironic that none of our other players were wanted. Clubs would know that Watford probably would let players leave, but no offers other than for Tiny. So no one wanted Hodson, Dickinson, Doyley, Garner, Big Chris, Forsyth, Yeates, Etc etc Be interesting to see if any go out on loan

Shame to see tiny go but you can't blame him, and IF he did ask to leave then fair play, he's gone somewhere where he's definitely wanted, and he can probably spot that he's not gonna be first choice by xmas.
To be honest I'm not exactly happy that our little club is changing so quickly, BUT i am excited about it, I've been going to the vic for over 30years and generally in that time we've been a pretty average 2nd tier club, and that is, and always was about our level, the only way this seems to be heading now is ONWARDS AND UPWARDS, and that doesn't quite sit right does it. but it's gonna be an interesting ride.
I hope that Come the end of the season we'll all be in that pond as happy as Larry, waving our flags and drinking peroni.
Doubt it though.

Also because someone criticises the current administration it does not always mean that they favoured mad baz (or his associated safe cracking skills!).
I too am not entirely comfortable with the loss of identity that the new loans system (I could see this loophole being closed next season as it clearly is a route around financial FairPlay) entails however I am a supporter of the club however I will criticise the club on points of order if I feel that it is wrong - that does not mean that I or others should be told to simply go away by my fellow supporters.
The demotion of the academy status, I viewed as initially negative but the five year contracts for Murray and Hoban signal that if the young players work hard enough and are good enough they will be invested in I see as really positive - so its not black and white but shades of grey (and of course yellow, red and black).
On Tiny - sad to see him go but I can understand all the reasons and whilst he has been a fine servant this probably suits all parties. Asking to leave is code for handing in a transfer request and this often prevents the selling club having to pay certain loyalty bonuses to the player upon departure, this may be the case here.

Sheff Weds have chased him for a while. It's transfer deadline day, his agent gets a call from Sheff Weds offering him 2 year contract, more money and a nice bonus for the agent. Taylor knows he only has a year left at Watford, has a young family, has lots of new competition at the club, and knows at SW he will be first choice whereas Watford is now unknown. In that circumstance I would ask for a move

I wonder who will be next to get shipped out, can't say I would be sorry to see the likes of Dickinson, Forsyth, Garner or Yeates go out on loan but suspect we are stuck with them.
Maybe we should do it the Pozzo way, buy a lower league club and then ship all the players surplus to requirements off to them.
Think my loans.co.uk shirt will get a few outings this season

Why are so many Watford fans against change? You remind me of frightened old men that have had their meal times changed at the retirement home.
Some coments i read on here stagger me, I support Watford FC not individual players and i want my team to play well and be succesful on and off the field, right now thats what im seeing.
If you dont like it go support some one else, or use the pent up agression i see against the club here and release that anger in a positive way on the terraces, yea i no we dont have any but you no what i mean, to support the lads.
If all that hot air was released on a match day at the Vic we would create a cracking atmosphere for the team.

The UK is in a mess thanks to people voting for the the same old parties. Get real out with the old in with the new its called evolution, the system is loaded against change, thank goodness there are still enough people with cajones to make changes.
We need a revolution now in politics make sure at the next election you don't vote for the three main parties!

Is there any indication of what the great GT thinks of the direction our club is taking? Whatever the future holds nothing will ever change the fact that the Taylor/John era lifted us from a mediocre club with zero aspirations and gave many of us experiences of success we had no right to expect. More than that, it shaped the whole ethos of Watford FC in a way that set an example to the whole country and gave us good reason to feel proud. Graham Taylor loves Watford, was until very recently its chairman, and is a wise and articulate commentator on the game. Has the WO tried to interview him about his take on the post-Baz era? We have brought in several new defenders, players come players go as long as we have a winning team most fans do not care , the best watford players for the last 5 years or so have been other clubs loan players
Lansbury,cleverley,k
ightley,Adam Johnson e.t.c
AS FOR SOME OF THE OTHER "DEADWOOD" as some fans are calling them THESE PLAYERS
were brought in by the old regime , good business !! i think not ,as you are saying nobody else wants them!!!
Get behind the Pozzo family and Zola and the team , it may take a bit of time but surley times are better now than for the last decade or so , do you all realise just how close we were from oblivion at the football club , be happy you still have a club to support trust me as i know , we were all but dead until thank goodness the Pozzo family believed in us
Enjoy the ride for once

Ok firstly I know I am going to be laughed at for saying this but can we all stop telling fans of our club to "stay away" and "good riddance" simply because their view of how the club is or should be run is different from our own. Please remember we may be able to sign extra players on loan but gaining additional supporters is actually harder so please don't alienate the ones we have.

As for Tiny, well he made the correct decision for himself, as professional do these days. Im sure that, Watford supportsers being what they are, he'll get a warm reception back at The Vic for his services in the past couple of years.

We have always lost players in the window for next to nothing, without gettin any sort of decent replacement in in time. This season we have signed at least 5 players who play centre back before shipping tiny out!
One more thing, to all u who believe the heart and souls of the club is being ripped out think again. Players come and go, the hart of the club is the fans, the stadium and the club itself. All the new guys should feel privileged to play in the famous golden yellow. Premier league here we come!

I can't believe the whingeing and complaining from these so-called fans. Some time ago our little club under the 'benefactor' Bassini was in danger of going into liquidation because all he wanted was money for himself and not the good of the club. Then they were saying they hoped someone would buy our club. Now that has become a reality and now they complain about the Pozzo family and the way they run the club. What they are trying to do is to get the club to the Premiership. To do that they have to change things - the style of play and the players. They have a proven track record in Udinese and Granada, so stop complaining get behind the owners and the manager and the team. Concerning the number of fans attending matches, if the Watford fans would stop whining and start supporting, then that would encourage others to come, and show the Pozzos that they are appreciated for what they are trying to do. They have brought their money with them and in that sense we have never had it so good since the glory days with Graham Taylor. COYH! Onwards and upwards! Forza la revoluzione!

Many keep harping on about Graham Taylor who will not be forgotten, but we have a real soccer legend now as our manager, world class player and totally respected by all.We are so lucky.
If we did get promoted do you not think that the Pozzo family would be entitled to spend the windfall on whatever club they deemed needed it most. After all we have more or less recieved many players on a freebe at there expense.
My last point is that it has become very clear that football nowadays has changed with clubs having mostly or nearly all foreign players at the highest levels in most countries, so if we want to progress this is clearly the way to go. That simple.

Agreed, also if we did have unlimited funds, how many of us would pick loads of British players anyway? Ronaldo, Messi etc can only think of 1 maybe 2 Brits I'd have in my team

Be most interested to hear Tiny's version not sure I will take the word of the club. After all we have signed six players plus since we were told no one more was likely to come!

I can't believe some people are saying there's a split camp coz that's just rubbish! It's not like if they don't play they don't get paid! Also it goes to show the character of a fringe player... If there that unhappy then they will either work harder to get into the team or decide to leave in Jan or go out on loan in a few weeks! If the player is someone who thinks "I don't care coz I'm being paid" then club can release him if they think he is harming the dressing room and get him off the wage bill! And if that was the case would you want that type of player at WFC? Also u can send a loan player back! You don't have to keep him... Andros Townsend anyone? I believe 3/4 loan players will go back in next transfer window as Zola will decide how he sees his ideal 18 then add a few good youth/academy to this! Keep the faith chaps
