Which of Watford's summer signings have impressed you most?

Picture: Holly Cant Picture: Holly Cant

Watford made 16 signings this summer but very few of them have had a real impact for the Hornets since their arrival, with injuries or fitness issues hampering several of the players. But which one of the signings have impressed you the most so far?

Watford have conceded 13 goals in seven league games but goalkeeper Manuel Almunia has made very few errors and has shown why he played at the top level for several years. So would he receive your vote?

Daniel Pudil only just missed out on Czech Republic's Euro 2012 squad and has provided great balance from left back. Has he been your pick of the bunch.

Almen Abdi was superb early in the campaign and whilst he has struggled in some of the contests of late, is he the player who has impressed you the most?

And the Hornets' top scorer so far this season is Matej Vydra, who has scored four goals in nine outings - most of which were out wide.

The four players mentioned above have featured the most out of the new signings but maybe Fernando Forestieri or Nathaniel Chalobah are your stand-out performers?

Vote in our ballot and comment on the issue below.

Rather than just choose one, wouldn't it be more appropriate to give all of them marks out of 10 say. Some I haven't even seen yet, why does it take so long for them to get fit, compared with Deeney for example?!

The question is asked better when we have had an opportunity to see all the new players play.

Matej Vydra will always appear the best as he arrived fit and has already scored four goals. Although the defensive players may impress later.

If he keeps playing like he did in the first half Saturday then Chalobah could be head and shoulders above. Abdi has stood out more for me so far, keeps the ball moving and has a good attacking side to his game, creating chances for others or himself.
Vydra could score a lot of goals this season when the team is more settled I think he could be on the end of a lot of the good play.
Could do with the defensive signings coming good!

But in fairness Holly, that would be +/- 7m quid less in the clubs coffers and I would suggest that without that money we would have been in the hands of administrators long before The Pozzo takeover.

Matej Vydra and then Almunia. He has made some world class saves since he arrived at the club.

By the way a bit off the topic, I never knew Rob Kiernan left Watford last year. I always thought he was playing with the reserves.

Just found answer :

Last Watford hatrick at the Vic was March 1st 1997 - Kevin Phillips v Bristol City!! 15 years and no Watford hat trick at the Vic -that's poor, come on Matej, we have waited long enough

Last Watford hattrick was when Chopra scored 4 at Burnley 5th April 2003!

9 years ago, still too long, Vydra to bang in one or two hat tricks this season

Huddersfield on Saturday away and they are on fire. Zola needs to stop the rot at the back if we are to get anything from this trip.
Watford's strength has always been to get more out of the team than the sum of its parts. But at the moment the opposite applies - lots of skill on display but poor team performance. Zola's problem is that he has too many players to select from and an expectation by the owners, Nani and the players themselves that in travelling to a foreign land they will at least get to play and develop their skills. Nani and Duxbury are now trying to reduce the size of the squad but this can only be acheived by shipping out home grown players. We can't re-loan loanees. The Academy won't even get a look in. So selection is being permanently compromised. It feels like we are still in a pre-season stage where every player gets a game to show that they should be selected for the competitive matches - but we are now 7 Championship and 2 Cup matches into the season. If we slip into the relegation zone on Saturday this will bring new pressure on Zola. Given where we are, rather than where we'd prefer to be, it is essential that Zola has core players in the team each week to give us stability and form and around which the new loanees can play.
My core would be Almunia, Doyley, Nosworthy, Hogg, Yeates, Murray and Eustace. They may not all be the most skillful in the squad but they are players who can grind out results in the English Championship.

Was a very good win/performance for Huddersfield last night but I believe we've got the quality to go there and win.
Would go with;
Almunia
Cassetti, Hall, Nosworthy, Pudil
Chalobah, Abdi, Yeates
Vydra, Deeney, Murray
Subs: Bond, Doyley, Neuton, Hogg, Smith, Forestieri, Beleck.
Would go Hall and Nos to deal with strength of Vaughan and Novak. Cassetti was fine defensively until formation change. Yeates link up play in midfield is worth keeping him in. That selection is on basis of who we know is fit, there's a few other players we have that could easily step in if fit.

Agree with the side except Cassetti. He will be at risk of being taken apart by a strong, confident side. Then, again, maybe this would be the test to see if he can learn to cope with the speed of players in this league.

Mate of mine supports a Premiership team he has no connection with and by 'support' I mean he has a replica top and watches them on TV. I used to laugh about this and the fact none of the team had any connection with the city they now represent. I may not live in Watford, but I come from there and I regularly go and see the Golden Boys; when I do I never boo them but always sing 'Watford Till I Die'. I point out how many local kids got into the Watford team and how many supported the team as kids. My mate said if a rich foreign owner came in, bought the club and filled it with players from overseas I wouldn't complain if they started winning. He is wrong, even if we win every cup going it would not feel right. This team is looking less and less like a real Watford team. The Pozzo's have just bought a brand name. For the first time in my life it no longer feels like 'my' club. Watford till I die? Might as well support Italy. This is very sad and however says we should be realistic and this is the reality of modern football then I say you can keep it. I want Watford back. There is a reason club names are the same as towns and cities across England, they are meant to be the local community's team.

I think tosh! Even GTs community minded team only had several homegrown talents in it. What's the difference when someone from say Glasgow or Newcastle plays for us and someone from Italy or Africa? None are local to Watford, none have yellow blood so tbh I couldn't give a fig where they come from as long as we are successful.

For people to say they'd like a team of locals (or at least reasonably local) is a little shortsighted I think.
It sounds to me as if some people are longing for a bygone era when there were very few foreigners playing in England. But if that was the case, they wouldn't have embraced the likes of Blissett, Barnes, Lohman, Neilson, Helguson and countless others since.

Not many of the best team we ever had (1982/3) were local, and they had no affinity with Watford before they joined. They were just professional footballers who happened to be good and within our wage structure at the time, and in fact I am sure they'd all admit to supporting other teams if they were pushed on the subject.
It's wrong to assume that a person who is from the local area would have any greater desire to do well than someone who is from the Czech Republic, for example.
The choice is either embracing the change, or dropping down 2 or 3 leagues, where you can get your fill of local lads.

The choice is either embracing the change, or dropping down 2 or 3 leagues, where you can get your fill of local lads.
absolutly agree. I don't think there is a single Watford supporter who wouldn't be delighted with a successful Watford side filled with local lads and academy graduates. But I doubt that has happened since the days of frock coats and tall hats.
All professional footballers these days are mavericks who play for those offering the best terms. Whether they come from this country or abroad makes little difference.

I was at Darlington, Workington etc at Bournemouth got that must win game that nigh condemned us to Division four. In fact as a 14 year old I missed only 4 games home and away in that relegation season under Keen.
I was also there for the glory years. I know what I preferred.
The way we were going under the last regime was down to the basement leagues once more. And very quickly via administration.
You enjoy your nostalgic love in pal, and I thank God that you or your ilk never got your wish and Watford's demise.
Going to Huddersfield Saturday? I'm sure we'd know each other if you we're around in the bad old days!

We haven't had a local team for almost 60 years when we had the likes of the Bateman brothers and Maurice Cook,Bill Barber ,Micky Benning and David Pygall, even then the likes of Les Graham, who I believe came from the North West, were in the team.A professional footballer would play for the Boy Scouts in Outer Mongolia if, ofcourse, the money was right.!

The idea of a "local" player bleeding yellow is an utter nonsense.

Look at Sordell, local, at the club his whole teenage life, goes at the first sniff of a move.

These new players look potentially miles better than the ones we had. They try just as hard, if anything harder. They are certainly more entertaining to watch.

They may not all be the most skillful in the squad but they are players who can grind out results in the English Championship.
good post there,I would agree with all those comments, take note Zola.
Apart from the fact Eustace is near finished with this back injury. Hogg has been worfull this season and appears to be in a sulk. Murray has completely lost his head and Yeates has one good game every full moon. Stop filling these pages with drivel.

Matej Vydra and Daniel Pudil have been the stand out players for me! It is clear to see in the fact that Vydra does not stop running or trying that he cares as much for this club as Marvin Sordell did and as much as Sean Murray does. The fact that when evry other player has jacked and run dow the tunnel that matej and Vydra come and sit in front of the Rookery and show there thanks means more to me than almost anything. Also Daniel Introducing his baby son to the Rookery with Matej was one of the nicest and most passionate things i have seen on a pitch for years!!!! I also think Chalobah and Battocchio will be astronomical when they are fully fit and playing reguarly!!!

If you don't know, read the Martin Samuel article in the Daily Mail today, about Watford.
Many of us will violently disagree, many of us will approve, but it is an eloquent (if possibly incorrect) criticism of Watford, the Pozzos and the current loan policy, and does reflect the feelings of many in football outside Watford.
It does express my own doubts about Nani/Duxbury, tho'----.

The Martin Samuel article seems a little racist to me. Also, he claims all our players are loans - how does a player signing for 1 year permanently differ to signing a player for 1 year on loan, in reality? Apparently Samuel is a Hammer...!

Right or Wrong - -as long as a player turns up and puts in a full shift on the pitch .. I dont care where they come from -- We have had some excellent loan signings over the Years and Many who are not "local" -- Should I stop supporting the team that are over an hours drive away as i am not "local"? add to that my 2 boys and our season tickets plus their friends (5 who are converted to WFC) -- shirts etc etc ... just get behind the players on the pitch and Deeney -- I am converted... (Neuton not so sure about) and support the team -- without us they are nothing! Whatever happened to the guys who used to start the songs off? I havent heard a "W" "A" etc for a while or a chant against any stinky Gypos for an age --

I think you'll find Marvin was given no choice but to leave, a certain owner wanted the money. For the record, a source says Marvin is very unhappy in Bolton, expect a move in January, back South or South Wales

Samuel has to write something to fill his paper, not much gossip to fill pages. Yes he is a Hammer and WHU have more press than any other club, and there is no love lost between Duxbury and Samuel.

Let's face facts, Duxbury & Nani are here to make money, BUT they can only do that IF the team does well, gates go up, income grows, the team get promoted etc etc, any business person would expect to get rewarded for success. The flip side is if Watford fails and they get fired, then their reputation after two failures is in tatters. So like it or lump it, we all want same things for Watford to be successful, some to make money, the rest like me because we are in a full blown Marraige with the club since birth until we die !!!!

The loans are all for a year (except Chalobah as he is so young), and all have a view to staying for a second loan spell or become permanent (dependant on this year and clubs financial position).

So let's get behind the team and club, draw at Huddersfield and 3 points at the Valley Tuesday night, let's get as many Orns as possible at Charlton Tuesday, should take at least 1500 !!

It really is time to choose then edgrigg - Watford and success or somewhere else and dross. Free country/your choice. We need positive supporters for our FUTURE not negativity and constant diatribes about our glorious local past which, in reality, was only glorious on one or two fleeting moments in history.

I don't need to justify my comments bushey wails. I've supported Watford since I was 7, I'm now 56 so you do the math. I've been there, home and away for 45 or so years and I support the cause now because I believe in our future. Seems to me as if it's you that's the quitter here not me.
