Watford are set to be without five of their loanees for their Championship clash against Huddersfield Town

Watford will have Jonathan Hogg back for this weekend’s trip to high-flying Huddersfield Town but will once again be without a number of summer signings.

Hogg missed the draw with Bristol City due to illness but he has been training with the squad this week and is fully fit once more.

Troy Deeney and Fitz Hall both made their first appearances of the season on Saturday and Gianfranco Zola said he will make a decision on whether they will be fit to start this weekend.

Prince Buaben is still out with a hamstring problem and he is joined on the sidelines by five of the club’s summer signings.

Ikechi Anya has a swollen ankle, Geoffrey Mujangi Bia has a groin injury and Joel Ekstrand is likely to miss out through illness.

The other two players are Alex Geijo and Cristian Battocchio. Geijo joined the club seven weeks ago but has struggled with fitness issues – he was set to return after the international break but picked up a groin problem.

Battocchio made a brief substitute appearance at Derby on September 1 but has not been involved since returning from international duty with Italy Under-20s.

Speaking on Tuesday, Hornets head coach Gianfranco Zola said: “Battocchio came back from the national team with a problem with his groin and we’re just taking it easy as we don’t want it to get any worse. Yesterday (Monday) and today (Tuesday) he’s been training with Geijo and he should be available shortly.”

“I don’t think they will be available for the weekend, maybe for Charlton,” Zola added.

Zola also revealed that John Eustace is close to returning to the training ground after missing the previous seven games following back surgery.

Eustace has been training at a specialist centre and is recovering well, although no date has been given for his return.

Zola said: “He is doing strengthening work and he’s getting better. I don’t know when he’s going to start [full training], hopefully next week he will start training on the pitch. I spoke to him and he hasn’t got pain any more and that’s very important.”

The fitness of these guys particularly Geijo is a joke. A jailbird like Deeney is fit after 11 weeks in the slammer.

I agreed with everything in the Martin Samuel article. Weaving in 16 loan players is impossible especially for an average manager like Zola. These Udinese journeyman are not prepared to die for the yellow even if they were fit which they are not.

I would much rather have had last years team which finished 11th with 64 points and have Dyche back at the helm.

hogweed - what is the point of that post - we are where we are - Yes the fitness levels of the newbies is poor but we have about a 1000 to chose from. It can't be helping that we can't bed in the same players into a tight group - but neither Dyche / 64 points or anything else about last year is ever coming back - time to stop grieving!

In Geijo's case - we are his last chance - out of contract in the summer and at 30 not financially secure for life with 2 or maybe 3 years at the top left - i would have thought that he has more to be motivated about than most

If you have seen the passion of the new players when we have scored then you should not doubt them; they've been celebrating more than the previous team. Secondly, Dyche was always going to have to sell Taylor and Maps and there was no way we could have replaced them under the Pozzo's, that's even if we still had a club. I would much rather finish second in the Premiership but we can't keep looking into the past. Also Dyche's best players who are still at the club (Hogg, Deeney and Eustace) haven't featured for various reasons so with our current injury predicament it is lucky we have lots of loanees. If you feel you do not love the club anymore you should not come; we will miss you because there are not many Watford fans left. But if that's what you decide, you are about to miss the most tense and exciting period of our history for better or for worse. Forza Watford and up the 'orns!

Players like Vydra, Pudil, Abdi are quality and I'm sure Neuton, Cassetti, Ekstrand and co will prove there worth!
Geijo has a point to prove and when fit will feature and score loads! There is still nearly 40 league games left so I'm not at all worried!
This point last year Reading were in the same position and look what happened!
With the return of Deeney who also has a point to prove whilst trying to redeem himself things look good!

When you have a skeleton squad, you throw players in when they are not 100% as they have no choice.

When you have lots of players, you can be over-cautious

Fear not dear Bokke
Holly has answered this above. Zola is being cautious because he has a squad to do so.
If you could see the style he's imposing you'd be reassured.
I think you may find Zola talks through the official site and not the WO. Could be a strained relationship?

Hogprick heres a question for you to answer... which you cant as it appers you dont go to games... How many of last years players got there kids at the end of a match and brought them onto the pitch infront of the Rookery and introduced them to the fans like Daniel Pudil and Matej Vydra did after Bristol City?? Long after the remainder of last years squad had jacked and gone down the tunul... Vydra and Pudil are more than passionate about our fine club.
Oh well, if they brought their children on to the pitch we have nothing to worry about.

I rarely agree with Hog, but it amuses me nobody seems to be able to counter what he says without getting abusive. Sign of a weak argument me thinks.
I answered his points and I was not at all aggressive. In fact, I said we would miss his or anyone else who didn't want to support us any more. Probably the least hostile response possible. The points he makes are valid, but pessimistic. Firstly the players we have are passionate and have significant quality. Secondly we need patience. I hate to even talk about Judas Rodgers, but look at where Liverpool are in the league. They have decent quality players but the implementation of a new playing style is going to take time. But when it comes together after the New Year we will beat most teams in our division.

Also I personally do not doubt Zola. He finished mid-table with West Ham and only suffered when the Icelandic owner went bankcrupt and started to sell the players he was building the team around. Despite the obvious gulf in quality, he is still trying to change the squad slowly and is bringing them together by giving them a deadline to speak English so cliques do not form. The football has been getting better and better and the defending will improve once we actually get a consistant match fit back four. Plus you're forgetting Chalaboah will win us matches on his own if he stays in the holding role and improves his fitness. Then we have our clinical striker who is being slowly nursed back to health. Up the orns.

Hogg is entitled to his opinion, i will ignore some of his comments like wise with the Ignorant Journalist who wrote in the Daily Mail and who has done little research only what he has seen from the outside. Why doesn't he get an exclusive for the Mail with an interview with the Pozzo's?....I doubt it.
Watford do not deserve to be at the top of the league no matter what system, what players they have, who is bank rolling them.We have to earn to be at the top by winning matches this will take time.
It will take about 13 games before we can get an idea of how we are going to perform this season. Then I will hold back any judgement till then. However, we will have to mix up the style in this league otherwise we will see more 5-1 defeats.
There is always one club that is in the bottom half that gets into the play-offs.
Udinese have a very large squad and it is not any wonder that they are not fit if half of them have not been playing in the Italian team. At lease seeing them now will give Zola which ones he wishes to keep or send back either in Jan or at the end of the season.
In the past we have been so use to the Accademy players being used, but were not up to scratch and performing consistently. Remember league rules state 10 of the 18 match day squad have to be from the British League system, hence we will always need Accademy players and players from other UK clubs
So those doubters keep the faith, i rather have 10,000 committed hard core fans than say another 5,000 fans of moaners or windbags. If you don't like what you see b*gger off to L*ton.
Anyway here is to hoping for three points on Saturday.

Yes, the fitness problem with so many players is a worry but let's not panic. Remember after 15 games last season we'd only got 11 points, we've currently got 7 points from 7 games so let's see where we are after 15 games and re-evaluate things then. There's still lots of time to turn it around. However this sort of thing has never been tried in this country before so the Jury is still out so it could all turn out brilliantly, be a complete disaster or more likely end up somewhere between the two!!

Regarding Huddersfield: all three of their goals at Blackpool looked like the Watford of old; two set pieces and one long hoof - all of which were badly defended by a Blackpool side committed to on the ground football. This is worrying for Saturday given our recent defending, but I would still rather be patient and go the Blackpool/Zola route toward decent, quality football than revert to hoofball.

Well buddy you haven't read it properly have you? It's fraught with mistakes the main one being Young came through The academy, he never did. He also decried the loanees foreign nationalities, Chabolah being one, who despite his non Anglo Saxon name is English and represents England.
Also conspicuous by its absence is no mention of his fellow frat man Bas, a big omission from our recent history.
Samuel, is a self appointed jerk who lives Man City and all their foreign players, but clearly thinks little Watford should stay in their lower league box where we belong.
What more could you expect from a bitter Iron?
So matey, in a nutshell the report was sensationalist, and factually incorrect as well as being a tinge xenophobic.

Somewhere down the line the Pozzos will put the salary bill in WFC's books, and paying players in sick bay is not good budgeting.

No free lunch.
Ah gorywasp, I think the Pozzos will take out when there model is up and running. We are in the prem, making money, playing football and not a hybrid called rugball.

I read the Samuels article and my initial thought was that he knew very little about WFC and where we were heading under the previous ownership. So thanks to the Pozzos' we are now a club not threatened with administration and the penalties financial or demotion or points deduction that go with it. On the other hand I do think the loan system does need to be looked at again. Yes it is the same for all clubs to take advantage of or not as they see fit, but maybe it is too open ended. Another rule that I consider could be looked at is making substitutions from the bench with a few minutes to go, or even in injury time, so as to waste time. Maybe no subs after 75 minutes. At least that would give the oncoming player some playing time. An exception could be made if a player is seriously injured and carried off on a stretcher never to return. Just a thought.

Each player has a registration that is unique to him. When a transfer is made the registration has to be re-registered to the new club. Very similar to a V5 car log book.

If the Pozzo's have been smart they will have put all the shares of the 3 clubs into one company ie. Pozzo Limited. If they have done this there is no distinction between the 3 clubs ownership as they are all owned by the one company.

If this is the case then when a player moves he does not need to be re-registered as the is simply movijng from one branch of the company to another and no registration has traded hands. By doing it this way you can have as many players moving between the 3 branches as the player registration is always maintained within the same company.

Therefore you can have as many players as you want. There cannot be a change in the rules to prevent this happening as a football club is a business just like say Tesco.

It is no diferent than working for Tesco in Watford High Street and then been moved to work in Tesco Reading. Tesco maintain your employment but move you in house. This is no different to any other business in the world.

Therefore if you stop Us, Udinese and Granada doing it, you have to apply this same rule to every company in the world. I.e making you sign a new contract with Tesco every time you moved branch. This is simply not do-able.

If the club shares arnt like this, surly this is the way to go.. I think im right with what im saying but asi havent owned a business for the last 3 years rules may have changed allthough i dont see why we cant do this.

LD look iv learnt paragrapghs lol! Had to look it up on wikipedia though so i might have got it wrong.. Dont forget to call me if you want breakfast before usloyal fans head up north tomo!

Well the last person I'd try and attempt to humour is you, and your whereabouts has no bearing on anything.
So as per usual your comments are pointless and you can't reason with a scummer lover can you?

I think it demonstrates a poor understanding of the position we were in. To take such an aggressive view the success or failure of the pozzo regime based on 7 games is frankly shallow.

He should turn his sights on a premier league which is hopelessly unbalanced and devoid of home grown talent.

We are where we are...I hope that the loanees
make a bigger impact than at present, I hope that Zola and Nani try to improve the team and that we at least survive in this decision.
Currently we have been extremely disappointing and most changes have not improved us however now we need to get behind the team, and trust in Zola.
Whether Sean and Tiny should have gone, whether the Udinese set up is far less professional than we were told, it is all academic.
The one thing I won't forgive is if the team does not try and at the moment I believe they are doing their best and as such deserve our backing.
