Gianfranco Zola believes Watford showed a 'good mix of English fighting spirit and foreign flair'

Gianfranco Zola admits he was surprised by the "English fighting spirit" shown by his players on Tuesday night after Watford secured victory despite spending the whole of the second half with ten men.
The Hornets went into the second 45 minutes against Charlton Athletic a man down due to Fernando Forestieri's second yellow card just before the break but despite this, they took a 2-1 lead through Almen Abdi's impressive free kick.
Watford then spent considerable time on the back foot as Charlton searched for an equaliser but the visitors defended bravely and showed passion as they held on for the win.
Zola said: "I am learning about my team and I didn’t expect such a fighting spirit. With some of the balls, they really threw themselves into it.
"In this league, it is not just about the flair and the work you do on the ball; it is about the fighting spirit. Today we had a good mix of the English fighting spirit and the foreign flair. That is the perfect mix in my opinion."
Back-to-back victories mean Watford currently sit in 12th position; five points away from the drop zone and six from leaders Cardiff City. Not that Zola has noticed.
He said: "We have so much to work on and we need to improve on many things. We didn’t look at the table before these two games and we won’t start watching it now."

‘I loved the spirit’ said Gianfranco Zed,
As he woke up in his king-sized bed,
‘It’s rather warm, it’s a bit hotta’,
And then he tucked into his panacotta.
GZ then had a coffee and a bit more cake,
He danced around his kitchen to Swan Lake,
He got hungry and had a Cadbury Flake,
His cat shed it’s hair so he got a rake.
The cat got excited, it had a wee,
‘the cat pee smells better than Chelsea’,
GZ then had a doughnut and a cuppa tea,
The cat got fleas,
It sank to its knees,
The mouse ate some cheese.
And GZ said can I have some please.
Let us all revel in national poetry day.

, unity and courage to dig deep as a unit together, to get a result against the odds at HT.
I feel at times on these articles on the Observer that some maybe too quick to judge especially in a negative light. Yeah before the Bristol game, it had been a tough start to the season. We had some good results at Palace, Birmingham, and the not soo good at Derby then some bad luck its fair to say in particular against Brighton.
I believe that there are huge postives signs of the team really bonding together. Ok we still need to get it tighter at the back, but we are certainly heading in the right direction..Fitz Hall has made a huge impact at the back. Now with the other loanee's approaching fitness Bia, Geijo, Elkstrand…then well we could really be in for a good season.
There has been some interesting talk about the Pozzo project too in recent time on here. As far as Im concerned, I feel grateful that finally we have some stability at the club. Fact is for years, we have faced uncertainty with that constant dark cloud lingering over us of possible administration. Now the Pozzo's have come in and offered us a lifeline when we needed it the most. Without them then we wouldn’t be enjoying the players we have been witnessing really becoming of age in the past few games in particular. There was always going to be decisions we either agreed with or not regardless of whether the Pozzo's got involved.
I for one was extremely critical of Martin Samuel's article in the Daily Mail few weeks back. I feel his views are very channel minded, exploits the negatives and misses out the key positive points of the Pozzo takeover. I mean he starts off with saying "The sell is Alexis Sanchez. The reality is Steve Leo Beleck". I feel this comment is rather cheap and not a true reflection of the impact the loanee's have had at the club thus far.
We haven't seen much of Beleck yet to judge his worth, but I'd personally buy Martin a ticket to come see the likes of Abdi, Forrestieri, Pudil, Vydra string the ball around Vicerage Road. I feel his use of the word "apparently" in the article to describe Vydra & Abdi is rather undermining of players you have never seen play.
Under the Pozzo regime, we have also secured deals for the rising youth within the ranks such as Connor Smith. So to me these are positive signs coming from the Pozzo family regarding their ambition for Watford FC. All I will say finally on the Martin Samuel front is on his viewpoint of the problems of modern football…ask Man Utd fans what they think of how the Glazers run their club.
In closing, the point I really want to say we are in this together people through the good and the bad! Yeah there are always going to be decisions the club or Zola makes which some of us agree/not agree with. But the fact is guys, look at the support we gave the team Tuesday and then look at the end result it produced. Its fair to say the guys are is united on the pitch. Now is the time more than ever that we as fans are more united than ever. Keep the faith. C'mon you Horns!!!!

‘I no feel well’ said GZ one foggy day,
‘Maybe it’s because we beat Madrid away’,
‘Maybe it’s because I ate too much chocolate fudge’
‘That is why Malky’s is too fat to budge’.
So off GZ went to the quacks in the town,
His head was sore, he wore a frown,
‘Ah Duke Ellington, he was a clown’,
Then he went home and wore his nightgown.
So what was wrong with GZ I hear you ask,
To diagnose him is one hell of a task,
His nose would bleed, with many a drip,
For in 2014, Watford would win the premiership.
Along came Luton, trying to nick him,
Lloydinho repelled them with a bit of Vim,
‘Don’t touch our boss’ said Vydra and Hogan,
And with those words, we demolished Luton with a toboggan.
Thanks muchly

DuffmanWFC - Yeah totally agree with what your saying. For Martin to describe Watford as a "snapshot of all that’s wrong with the modern game", well where is the evidence of this & malmanagement in the running of Udinese & Granada.
If anything, there structure is unique and a real eye opener to the big clubs out there, who in the next few years will be feeling the effects of the football law over their poor finances and losses. You think of all the clubs that they could of brought to implement their structure into and they choose….Watford FC. From the risk of adminsitration at the end of last season to a club with stability, huge potential and a bright future ahead of us!
On the Forrestieri issue, of which I feel "holtonian" made a good point on. In my opinion he is no different to any of the top strikers in the premiership.
The harsh reality is that these loanee's do come from playing in a much higher standard of football.
They are now playing in a league which is "rough and ready", anyone can beat anyone on the day. So here comes Watford after this big takeover, with players such as Forrestieri, Abdi, Vydra doing there thing, in particular to Forrestieri in the Huddesfield game where he made them look silly, and basically got a 'kickin' for his trouble leading up to the 2nd goal.
There are opposition fans, teams who would dream of having the sort of talent we have on show….hence this backlack against us from the opposition all of a sudden. In all honesty, it is to be expected.
I don’t believe this Forriestieri thing would have been such a an issue said of it been in the Premiership.
This is nothing in comparison to Drogba in the past! It's Zola's job to carefully impliment these players into surroundings, very different to what they are used to playing in and for that I can see why he is protecting them the way he has.
In closing…what are people thoughts ahead of the game on Saturday?!

Like the comment that the loanees are dedicated to the task and not just journey men. Bring it on and bring it on. As to a now stale set of comments about the so-called "Denney chants" at Charlton, I recall the awful stuff from the 70s about "We like Harry Robberts, he kills coppers" and my recollection one Tuesday evening with some of our lot chanting against a Millwall player owing to his private life and him bedding someone that was not his wife. Morons one and all but they will get bored with it in the end I hope..
I think the WO and a few antis on here are just chomping at the bit to have a dig.
The focus should have been firmly on
We just won two away games in four days
We were beautiful one game, gritty the other.
Our support was great both games

Old Fernando he no dive,
But in Argieland, it's how you thrive,
Boss GZ he says he likes,
If old Fernando, he change his spikes.
But old Fernando, he no want,
To use long spikes, like a cont,
Cos in Argieland, long spikes is gay,
He says he likes to dive all day.
Now, HC, THAT'S a poem !

Re Deeney chants, I agree less said soonest mended. It may interest some that in today's Harrow Observer it reports that Wealdstone have been reported to the FA for alleged racist/homophobic chants at officials. The Club chairman and Supporters Club chairman have issued a letter to fans part of which reads "We cannot duck our responsibility as to how we manage behaviour at the ground. This includes all supporters home and away. Our request to all supporters is to keep up the passion while keeping your vocal support and behaviour within acceptable boundaries that cannot be construed as abusive to players, officials or other spectators."
Maybe we should take note.

Also, 750 Udin fans at Liverpool, we should of given them free tickets for our match Saturday to encourage them to stay in Uk until Sunday and come support their brother club, a good marketing opportunity. We could do with the extra fans ..... Udinese looked good tonight, if we go up, I like the look of that Di Natalie chap ....

My only tiny concern was the the formation they played 3-5-2.
I thought while we were better attacking v Bristol City we looked let at the back with this set up.
While I have not been to Charlton or Huddersfield the results speak or themselves with this formation.
I just hope Zola is playing it because its his vision for success, not because we are following the Udinese mould and setting up accordingly. Would not want our loanees to be educated in this formation for future Udinese commitments.
Ps what happens when we meet Udinese in the Europa cup a few years down the line. Can players play against their overseas parent club?

But back to reality why look for possible problems way down the line?
In regards to 235 formation, I'm sure Zola chooses that and not Pozzo. Let's give our man some credit rather then question whether every decision made is or isn't is own.
I think we've looked much better defensively since deploying this formation and will improve as the team gels.

Holly68 wrote:Great idea about the Udinese fans, Holly68 to be head of marketing, could be another redundancy on the cards.
to be fair to Frank and the Wobby, there are certain stories that they would like to run, HOWEVER they would alienate themselves at the club, so certain things have to be back door approved by the club. In general Frank has a good relationship with the clubs media department, for example Frank has one to one sessions with Zola at least once a week. If he was too contentious then Watford would block access to Zola, so they have to keep good Karma. I understand Frank has a request in to meet with Duxbury and Nani, hopefully this will happen soon, Duxbury and Nani got a hard time by the West Ham press, so maybe apprehensive. The breaking story tomorrow will be about Neil Price being made redundant, and the slant on the club not caring about the ex players association. I don't know the reasons for Neil's departure, however he can now focus on the pub with his brother. Hopefully there is room for Legends clubs at both the pub and the club, we are all grown ups. With any "Change" a new broom comes in, there are always casualties. Just like a manager coming in, Sean Dyche was unsure about Connor Smith, Zola gives him a 5 year deal, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What we must not lose sight of is all that matters at the end of the day is that the team gets results, then we are all happy. Watford Media department, the Wobby all want the same things as us fans, politics are inevitable but on the whole they all do a good job. I think the Deeney chants story wasn't a good idea and didn't need a big headline, any complainers to the wobby should of been redirected to the club. Anyway a learning curve. In Friday's paper Neil Price will put his side of story, obviously he is hurt at being made redundant, but he has a strong position at the pub and a loyal fan base and legends, however I hope he is grown up enough to understand the club is bigger than every individual, so there are two sides to every story, and would be good to have explayers in pub, ground, shop etc on matchdays, as they are our players, we are the fans ...

More later
I thank you
