Gianfranco Zola says he is excited about Watford's future and he almost knows his best XI

Picture: Holly Cant Picture: Holly Cant

Gianfranco Zola states the way his side have played at times this season makes him excited about the future of Watford and believes he is now close to knowing his best XI.

The Hornets have played some outstanding football this season but it has often been for 20 or 30-minute periods and has not produced points.

Zola said: “There are moments when I see the team play in a certain way where I get very excited and I am sure this can be a very good time for all of us.

“I am excited because I am not looking at the now; I am looking at how the team will look soon and when we are winning games.

“It makes me excited for all of the people involved with the club and about the type of football we will play.”

Zola admits he is still learning about the Championship, as are most of the summer signings, and believes they will only become better with time.

The Chelsea legend described the season so far as “intense” and has learned about the division’s unpredictable nature quickly.

There is no Watford game this weekend due to the international fixtures but Zola has stressed he will be using the break to improve the squad’s fitness, which has been an issue for some of the players this season.

Speaking on Wednesday, he said: “It gives me an opportunity to work hard on the physical condition and we will do more at the beginning of next week.

“It is the last chance before the end of the season where we can work in this certain way. It is very much work at the moment but the boys will have the weekend off to recover from the work we did this week and get ready for next week.”

Zola was appointed head coach in July but injuries and fitness issues mean he has yet to have a single week where the whole squad has been available.

With the likes of Alex Geijo and Cristian Battocchio returning to full fitness and the number of absentees reducing, Zola looks set for some selection dilemmas.

However, the Italian claimed: “It will not be difficult because we play so many games and obviously when everybody is fit and ready, when you have three games on a spin like we did recently, you can afford to make changes and not lose too much quality.”

When asked if he knows his best XI yet, Zola replied: “Yes I know it more or less. But there are a few positions that are a bit of a challenge where players have a chance to play. Also, John Eustace will be coming back and challenging the ones playing.

“I have an idea on what the team has to be pretty much but there are positions where I can afford to play one player or the other because there is not much difference between them.”

The 16 summer signings mean Watford have 42 professional players and even if you subtract those out on loan, there is still a squad of 37.

Zola accepts those who are not featuring will not be pleased but when asked if there has been any sign of unrest in the squad, said: “No not yet, not really. You cannot pretend that they are all smiles but they know the situation and to be honest, they are making it easy for me and for themselves.”

The former Parma and Napoli forward has stated in the past that he likes to work with a small squad and with the loan window open for more than a month, Zola admitted he did expect more players to have left by now.

The head coach said: “Ideally maybe some of the players should go and play some games because there are players who are not playing much and haven’t been involved as much.

“It would be good for them to get games but it hasn’t happened yet. We will see whether it happens.”

Zola also revealed the club will be playing a behind-closed-doors friendly next week.

"you can afford to make changes and not lose too much quality" wow, that feels good. It is SO good to have strength in depth at last. Loving the footie we're playing. Looking forward to climbing the table

Neuton has not been so exposed since we've gone 3 at the back. Hopefully Nosworthy will be fit again after the break. However, the shirt numbering would suggest that Neuton and Hall are first choice.

Neuton is a class act, he's taking time getting a grip of defensive nuances but is getting there. His vision and ball skills are there to see.
Agree with Bush, and would much prefer to home in on the many positives coming to the fore than pick out individuals for negative asides.
I love this man Zola and his philosophy, and I hope that for this very decent man and us he gets to realise his ambitions.
Jeez did I say I loved another man? It's only since I painted my walls pink.....

Some of the new squad are still finding their feet, as is Zola. How though Zola can say he has his best XI when some are not yet fit is debatable. Then there are managemnt mistaks partculary as to why Zola took off Deeney to be replaced by someone who was far from ready is beyond me. If we had been in the lead with XI men then yes give a player a run out but I remain of the view that it was a tactical mistake. That said, we are making great progress following poor start at home..

I like Neuton! We need a centre half that's good on the ball. If anybody looked suspect against Boro it was Hall, but I expect him to grow into the position in the next few games. Chalobah looked fantasticand showed how versatile he can be for us. Was really concerned about Cassetti though. His lack of pace left him exposed on numerous occasions, which is why i'm looking forward to the return of Buaben who fitted in nicely at right-mid last year. Exciting stuff!

I see young Britt Assombalonga scored another couple today in League 2, think we need to secure him a long term contract.

He has now done this regularly at non league, league 2, now need to put him on loan to a league 1 club after January. A smiley Ian Wright in the making.

Watford supporters need to relax and enjoy the ride, says the club's new owner Gino Pozzo
Watford’s new owners, the Pozzo family, have had tough accusations levelled at them since they acquired the Championship club: that they are creating some kind of football factory; a conveyor belt of young talent to be sold on; a finishing school flooded with transient loan players; that Watford will lose their soul; their academy will wither and die; they are a feeder club.

So here is a ‘cut-out-and-keep pledge’ from Gino Pozzo, the son of Giampaolo, who paid £15 million to buy Watford, adding them to Italian side Udinese and the Spanish club Granada.
“If you look at the recent history of Watford the project was: we need to sell all our best players as soon as an offer comes because there weren’t the financial resources to hold on to them,” Gino Pozzo explains. “That meant all the clubs in the Premier League and a lot of clubs in the Championship looked appealing to the player as a better place to go.
“Now the idea is to move the club to a different level where the player himself feels there are very few choices that are better. We want those choices to come down to Barcelona, Real Madrid and so on. The players who leave Udinese are moving to AC Milan, Inter, Juventus or a couple of clubs in Spain and a few clubs in England.”
The notion that, in the future, Watford will be able to resist all-comers apart from Barcelona or Manchester City may raise a few guffaws in Hertfordshire.
But the Pozzos can point to Udinese as indisputable evidence that they are serious, having turned an unstable club yo-yoing between the lower divisions into one challenging for Champions League qualification – and beating Liverpool in the Europa League two Thursdays ago with Gino Pozzo and his father in the Anfield directors’ box.

Pozzo family complete Watford takeover 29 Jun 2012
They are masters of the transfer market and punch above their weight. Now Udinese do only sell their star assets – players such as Alexis Sanchez – to Barcelona.
All well and good. But with 11 loan signings arriving at Vicarage Road from Udinese, what of the local players, the effect it will have on the academy? As pleased as Pozzo is to bring Czech international Matej Vydra and Swiss midfielder Almen Abdi to England he is even happier that Connor Smith, Sean Murray and Tommie Hoban, all academy graduates, have recently signed long-term deals.
“We were surprised that a club that works with young players is not committed to young players,” Pozzo says. “They had one, two-year contracts. Why? It was a mixed message. By changing that idea – to say that the players are here to fully develop to a top, top level – then they will sign longer contracts for the next three or four years. Everyone is starting to understand that.
“Watford fans need to relax and can enjoy this process. There is no cosmic mix to enable us to win. But we understand what works and what we have to do and if we are not performing at the top level it’s because we need more time and there's more work to do.”
So what is the ‘project’? It is a simple formula built on a thorough scouting network, a willingness to buy young talent early – when leading clubs are not always interested – and give it time to develop, which leading clubs can’t always do.
“Fifty per cent is good scouting, 50 per cent is good management,” Pozzo says. “And Watford is the right size because it’s a club which will enable you to develop young players and compete at the highest level without putting too much pressure on them.” Why start with young players? “Because knowing that our financial resources are limited we will have to go another way around to be able to challenge.”
Pozzo accepts that the pace of change, so far, at Watford has been faster than he would have ideally wanted – leading to scepticism that he is simply stockpiling players from Udinese to then sell them on. It is an accusation he refutes. “Maybe we have sent too many, too soon but it’s a case of wanting to move forward quickly.
“I wanted to give a chance to the manager to have the right quality, the resources he needed to make the team competitive.
"We are aware it’s confusing at the beginning but since we are looking at the long term we will have to go through some tough times now to get this together.”
The influx is a one-off. Watford will not have such a large number of loanees arrive again, Pozzo promises - while insisting that most of the players will stay for much longer than their one-year loan period.
“The ideal way to sign a player is a loan with an option to purchase. We have some good young, promising players in the academy and have a strong base to work on - and the fact that we are able to go out of England and sign some top young players is a unique opportunity which will make us much more competitive.”
It is not a three or five-year project - Pozzo will not put a timescale on it - but clearly the aim is to be in the top half of the Premier League.
“We want to be there one day but I’m not going to say ‘we have to be in the Premier League otherwise’. Otherwise nothing. We will just do the best we can do to get there as quickly as possible but without forgetting where we have come from.”

Yes I agree LD nice strong position to be in. Let's sign him up and if anyone wants to prise him off us they need to show us good money. Best talent will want to stay these days. Not like a few years ago when we were anticipating the likes of Young leaving for a good season or 2 before it happens

It's nothing to be ashamed of. There are many past players and managers I loved and wanted to man-hug. And I'm quite open with my wife about how I feel. The sell is a well articulated and researched article in last Saturdays Telegraph by Jason Burt, whereas he has interviewed Gino Pozzo and conveyed the vision of Watford FC for the future. The reality for those of you who read it is a lazy fat journalist in the shape of The Mail's Martin Samuel who wrote a piece several weeks back full of spite and a standard not too dissimilar to a teenagers unwilling homework exercise.

I for one know what side of the fence I sit and have never been so excited about the future of my club.

From my first seasons as a season ticket holder I used to ride 5 miles on a Saturday morning to work on the vans at a bakery at the age of 10 to earn enough to attend, 34 years later I still get that same buzz (excuse the pun).

I have seen the rise from the 4th to Europe, the 84 cup final, the subsequent flirts with the big boys in the Premier League however previously I have always known from the heart that it would not last, that we were punching above our weight, this time it is different, this time we have the backing to achieve something that will put us on the map. The big clubs have not always been big.

Lets get behind them and support our new team. This is going to be a great journey.

I'm the same Dunstable, my dad took me when i was knee high when he could afford it. When he was working i used to wait outside the ground for the gates to open 10 minutes from time. I've also watched them from the lower leagues when we had Bert Slater in goal and names like Stewart Scullion, Duncan Welbourne, Barry Endean and countless others.

Never have I been more optimistic than i am now.

Sick bed? Bloody lightweight Dusty downs!
Think I have been infected by non league weekend, too much like Scum Town for my liking
