Radlett cricketer Mike Dexter helped England’s Over-70s claim another Ashes series win on Sunday in the “highlight” of his illustrious cricketing career.

England won by eight wickets at Sussex to put them 2-0 up in the series and win the inaugural Over-70’s Ashes against Australia.

“The Test match I played in was the highlight of my cricketing life and beating Australia twice in two days is a memory which I shall savour for the rest of my life,” said Dexter.

Due to bat at number six, Dexter didn’t make it out to the middle, but he wasn’t disheartened not to get a crack at the Aussies: “Part of me wishes that I had had the opportunity to bat and score 50 or more, but part of me is relieved not to have batted and possibly been out for a duck.

“My overwhelming emotion is to feel privileged and honoured to have played in a winning England 70-plus Ashes team.”

England had already won the first Test in Hampshire and claimed a decisive 2-0 lead at the weekend.

Australia batted first, posting 235 for seven in their 50 overs with Bob Ziehlke of New South Wales top-scoring for the tourists with 106 and Graeme Crole of Tasmania adding an unbeaten 24.

Sussex’s Brian Scollay was England’s top wicket-taker, taking two for 52 in his ten overs.

England made light work of beating Australia’s total, reaching 236 for two in 46.4 overs to claim a 2-0 series lead and claim the inaugural Over-70’s Ashes win.

Hampshire’s Neil Blackey top-scored with 78, while Sussex’s John Anderson added a further 67. Bob Wilton of South Australia took two for 28 from his six overs.

The final Test was due to take place yesterday (Thursday) at Kenton Court Meadow in Sunbury-on-Thames.

The irrepressible Dexter was back in action on Monday at Chipperfield Clarendon as part of the Hertfordshire Over-70s side which beat Australia once more, this time by six wickets.

Batting first, Australia put up a total of 208 for three from their 45 overs.

There was a gentlemen’s agreement in place that batsmen would retire once they reached 35, meaning Peter Howes, Terry Dunn and Ian Willee joint top-scored for Australia with 35 each.

Hertfordshire took wickets through Colin Croucher and Tony Foster, with the third wicket a run out.

Opening the batting, Dexter joint top-scored alongside fellow opener Colin Garside and Colin Wilson on 35 as Hertfordshire scored 209 for four to claim the win.

Australia’s wickets came from Ziehlke, who took two for 32, and Bob Cotgrove, who took two for 48.

On Wednesday, Hertfordshire’s Over-60s completed another Australian victory, beating Victoria – travelling with the tour party – by nine wickets.

Victoria batted first and finished on 230 for eight with Graeme Cook retiring on 50 – as per the gentlemen’s agreement – and Greg Watsford not out on 47.

John Jarvis posted Hertfordshire’s best bowling figures with three for 38.

The Hertfordshire response was ruthlessly effective, completing the win with the score on 233 for one from 38.3 overs.

Peter Tyler retired on 53, while Chris Wright retired on 52. Watsford took the only English wicket to fall.
