Northwood Seconds ended the season in fourth place in Division Six A with five consecutive wins after beating Hatfield and Crusaders Seconds by 102 runs.

After winning the toss, Northwood batted first and were in trouble on 101 for seven. But the tail wagged and managed to get the team to a total of 187 all out.

In reply, Hatfield were never able to counter the pace of Nigel Hussey, who took three for eight in ten overs as Hatfield were out for 85.

In Division Eight B, Hemel Hempstead Town Fourths managed to avoid relegation after ending their campaign with a five-wicket victory over Little Berkhamsted Sahibs.

While Hemel did their bit, they also required help as Frogmore thrashed Letchworth Garden City Fourths which enabled them to leapfrog them up to eighth.

Little Berko batted first and had to settle for a score of 214 for eight. The wickets were shared all around the Hemel bowlers with Jack Boughton taking two for 47 while there was one wicket apiece for Martin Botha, Harry Milkins, Dawood Iqbal and Tony Beamish.

Hemel made a positive start to the run chase with opener Mike Samuels hitting 61 and Steve Smith providing 31. Nick Benson’s knock of 45 was another significant contribution while Iqbal (29) and Tony Linfoot (34 not out) steered them to a priceless win which kept them in the division.

In Division Nine B, Gareth Tucker signed off his sterling service of recent years as Leverstock Green Thirds skipper with a last-ball three-wicket defeat – although those on the field at Knebworth Park Fourths were left with a different idea of what the result should have been.

Graham Evans can be pleased with yet another patient and valuable contribution at the top of the Levy order, 65 this time, as the side reached 142 for eight from a rain-reduced 45 overs.

Several economical contributions with the ball from Green meant that Knebworth found themselves at 142 with one ball remaining.

Strong appeals for a run-out from the game’s last delivery weren’t upheld, however, meaning the already-relegated hosts were able to record a win, with Levy’s mid-table finish confirmed some weeks ago.

Chorleywood Thirds secured a dramatic 39-run win over Hatfield and Crusaders Thirds in Division Ten A as they bounced back from a poor batting display to produce possibly their best bowling and fielding display of the year.

Wood looked poor as they were bowled out for just 97 in 34.2 overs – skipper Rob Dunstone looked to be in form as he hit three boundaries in the first over of the match, before a tumble of wickets saw the home side struggling. Gulam Sherali eventually top-scored for Wood with 22, but the game looked like it was heading for a simple run-chase for the visitors.

Wood’s bowlers showed their determination not to finish on a low note though, as they made immediate inroads with Hatfield reeling at eight for three early on, with Nigel Tyler in particular looking in the mood for wickets.

Tyler eventually finished with four for ten from his eight overs whilst Josh Bungard had the visitors in all sorts of trouble as they had no idea how to play his leg-breaks. Hatfield were eventually bowled out for just 48 in the 28th over, with Bungard taking three for 23 and Dave Harrigan two for ten as Wood picked up an unlikely 39-run win to end their season with four victories from their last five games in a comfortable mid-table position.

In Division Ten B, Watford Town Thirds gained their third successive promotion after finishing second following a four-wicket win over Northwood Thirds.

After Watford won the toss, they decided to put their opponents in and they made 135 for nine off 50 overs. Zirak Khan impressed with the ball, taking four for 32 and Asif Khan was another notable bowler as he claimed three for 16.

In reply, Watford had to fight to get to 138 for six with Vishail Patil top-scoring on 45.

Andy Canning’s side have won three promotions in as many years and five in six years. The team finished second and just 18 points behind champions Redbourn Thirds.

In Regional Division B West, Chorleywood Fourths somehow picked up a six-run win in a low-scoring game at neighbours Rickmansworth Fourths to end their season on a high note.

Batting first, Wood looked all at sea on the damp track as they were bowled out for just 79, with Gary Proctor’s 32 and 14 apiece for club chairman Steve Dunning and Harry Saunders all proving to be vital as the game went on.

In reply, Ricky looked equally uneasy on the bowler-friendly pitch as Dunning and Wood skipper Simon Dare picked up three wickets each early on.

Proctor continued his good form as he then picked up the winning wickets at the end as Ricky were bowled out for just 73 to give his side the unlikeliest of victories.

In Regional Division C West, two dismissals for 15-year-old Arslaan Saleem and 13-year-old Jay Odedra’s wicket were the bowling highlights for Leverstock Green Fourths who ended the summer with a five-wicket win over Boxmoor Fourths at Parmiter’s School.

Boxmoor lost just four wickets during their 45 overs, but were only able to set a target of 121 for victory.

After a few early scares, avoided by opener Andy Welch (21), Mark Pearson (30) and Derrick Sheldon (34) came together for an unbeaten sixth-wicket stand to win the game and see Green to a comfortable mid-table finish.
