Steven Finn has been dropped for England's second Test with Pakistan after a poor bowling performance in their series opener.

An expensive spell at the crease, losing 128 runs without taking a wicket, did not help England's charge as they suffered a 75-run defeat by their visitors, despite Chris Woakes taking a total of 11 wickets.

Finn retained his place in a 14-man squad for the second Test, which begins at Old Trafford tomorrow morning, but James Anderson and Ben Stokes, both returning from injury, will replace him and Jake Ball in the side.

England captain Alistair Cook made the announcement today at his pre-match press conference, where he revealed a 12-man final squad would be named, which will also include three-capped Adil Rashid, who could make his first appearance since November.

"We're going to name a 12 - Steven Finn and Bally are missing out,” the captain said. "That means, obviously, Ben Stokes and Jimmy Anderson are back in - and Adil's going to be in the 12, just depending on what happens to that wicket by tomorrow."

Anything but an England victory in Manchester will leave them needing to win both the third and fourth Tests to stand any chance of victory in the series.
