Former West Herts skipper Matt Smith produced a superb bowling display to lead his struggling side to a much-needed Home Counties Premier League victory over St Albans.

The spinner finished with figures of seven for 59 off 22 overs as the Saints were dismissed for 134 at Park Avenue yesterday.

Earlier, the Stags had again failed to post a sizeable total in their Division Two East encounter and were bowled out for 182 after Neal Parlane had top-scored with 44.

Meanwhile, a century first-wicket stand helped Hemel Hempstead to a convincing seven-wicket win at basement club Hertford.

After bowling out the home side for 183, the outcome was never really in doubt once Brett Penny (66) and Hemish Ilangaratne (57) had put on 106 for the first wicket.

But Radlett’s hopes of continuing their good Division One form were frustrated by the weather.

Having dismissed Potters Bar for 201, the visitors looked nicely poised at 142 for four when the game was abandoned after the second ball of the 36th over.
