Despite a fight back from England’s lower order the home side couldn’t stop South Africa claiming the number one Test ranking.

Watford's Steven Finn was the pick of the England bowlers in the match against the Proteas, recording figures of eight for 149 as they looked to avoid a series defeat.

It was England’s top order that failed to deliver with their three most experienced batsmen Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook and Ian Bell all failing to reach double figures in the second innings.

Jonathan Trott (63) and Jonny Bairstow (54) came out fighting in the morning but once they had gone they needed help from the tail.

Wicket-keeper Matt Prior proved to be the outstanding batsmen whilst Stuart Broad (37) and Graeme Swann (41) offered some resistance to the fierce South African bowlers.

However, once Prior was dismissed for 73 Finn came to the crease. The bowler was caught for a golden duck as England surrendered their one year stint at the top of the world rankings.
