A cold day; a heavy pitch; a glorious win for the Wasps.

Five months into the season the Wasps were still waiting for their first win of the campaign but despite this long barren run the girls never let their spirits waiver.

The first half of the match was fairly even, though perhaps the visiting Wasps showing slightly more attacking enterprise, but Headstone broke away to score the opener. The Wasps hit back quickly with Sam Green finishing off a good move to score the equalizer. A timing error meant that half time came early with the sides level at 1-1.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first. Wasps doing more of the attacking but Headstone always fast, skilful and dangerous on the break. Again the home team took the lead from a great move that cut right through the Wasps defence. Once again the visitors fought back with Rhianne Kenney controlling the ball in the box before coolly tapping it into the net, 2-2.

The Wasps continued to pile forward, sometimes leaving themselves dangerously open at the back, when Sophie State picked up the ball 1/2 way into the opponents half, took it all the way into the box and blasted it into the goal to put her team into the lead for the first time this season.

The last ten minutes were nerve jangling stuff with both teams going close on more than one occasion but somehow the Wasps held on.

Lauren Hall won the Wasps player of the match trophy but every single Wasp player deserves special praise for their commitment. Also well done to the Headstone team who played with great skill and sportsmanship throughout.
