Watford went into this match, short of players against a team that had won every game in all of their competitions this season. Newham, However, were very short of players and contested the entire game with only nine players!

It was a tight first half, with the extra bodies of Watford nullifying an experienced, strong and powerful Newham team. Fifteen minutes into the half a great move from Watford shifted the ball quickly and simply from the halfway line, into the Newham penalty area. The ball was cleverly worked to Lauren Paul just inside the eighteen yard line. With time and space she got her head up and picked her spot between the posts. 1-0.

In less than five minutes Newham replied from a throw in to make the score 1-1.

It then became a war of attrition. Watford had most of the possession, but ran into the brick wall that is the Newham back line, and Newham threatened on the break, only for the extra Watford players to smother any threat. No further goals in the half mean the half time score was 1-1.

No score in the second half meant extra time and with this also goal less the match ended 1-1.

So to the dreaded lottery that is the Penalty Shoot-out. Nerves in both teams stretched it was the Ladies that held theirs amd won the shoot out 3-2.

Credit should go to Newham, for such a battling display with only nine players, and it is no coincidence that they have not lost a game all season, in normal time, at least.
